BOSTON – Os registros dizem que os Twins não são mais um time de playoff. O teste de visão corresponde a essas análises.
Os Twins fecharam uma viagem horrível com um dia histórico no Fenway Park no domingo, perdendo para o Red Sox por um placar coletivo de 17-4. Pablo López permitiu sete corridas, igualando seu recorde da temporada, em apenas quatro innings de uma derrota de 8-1 no primeiro jogo, e os substitutos dos Twins permitiram oito corridas para marcar em um intervalo de 14 rebatedores no jogo noturno, uma surra de 9-3.
O resultado é um recorde de 81-75, que fica atrás do Kansas City em queda livre e do Detroit em ascensão por um jogo para as duas últimas entradas de wild-card nos playoffs da Liga Americana da próxima semana. É a primeira vez que os Twins não estão em posição de playoff desde 2 de maio.
E embora fosse fácil culpar o arremesso pelo desastre de domingo, também foi a continuação de um mês de silêncio assustador da ordem de rebatidas. Os Twins coletaram 25 rebatidas em 30 innings durante esta série, mas 24 delas foram simples, incluindo todas as 12 rebatidas de domingo.
Os rebatedores dos Twins não conseguiram fazer home runs na série de três jogos, a primeira vez que isso aconteceu com eles em Fenway desde 9 a 11 de agosto de 2002. Eles não fizeram home runs em 51 entradas consecutivas, na verdade, sua maior seca de poder da temporada.
Não é de se espantar que eles tenham perdido 13 dos últimos 18 jogos, e oito dos últimos 10 jogos fora de casa. Agora eles caminham para casa para os últimos seis jogos da temporada, começando na terça-feira com três contra os últimos colocados Marlins e depois três contra os Orioles, que vão aos playoffs.
López transformou o primeiro jogo da tarde em uma derrota bem rápido, permitindo que o primeira base do Red Sox, Triston Casas, rebatesse home runs de três corridas no primeiro e no terceiro innings. Casas rebateu seu terceiro home run do dia dois innings depois, lançando o segundo arremesso de Brent Headrick na liga principal em mais de um ano para os assentos além do bullpen do Red Sox no campo central.
“Não há como esconder isso — não é o desempenho que eu estava procurando, especialmente com o que esse jogo significa”, disse López, cuja ERA subiu para 4,11 com a saída. “Não forneceu comprimento, não forneceu qualidade. Não fiz minha parte.”
