TAMPA — O quarterback estrela do Miami Hurricanes, Cam Ward, consegue escapar do pocket quando precisa correr. O quarterback da USF, Byrum Brown, usa seu atletismo com frequência, liderando seu time em jardas corridas antes do confronto de sábado entre as duas escolas da Flórida.
Cada estratégia tem seus prós e contras, e Ward explicou por que ele é um quarterback que lança primeiro enquanto se preparava para o jogo contra os Bulls.
“Eu só acho que há um momento e um lugar para fazer isso”, disse Ward. “Eu ainda não tive esse tempo este ano, para ser colocado nessa posição para fazer isso ainda. Mas se eu precisar, eu farei.”
Em três jogos, Ward tem sete corridas para 46 jardas e um touchdown corrido, significativamente menos tentativas de corrida por jogo do que ele teve na temporada passada. Em 2023, no ano passado, ele teve 120 corridas (incluindo sacks) para 144 jardas e oito touchdowns.
Brown, por outro lado, usa as pernas como outra arma frequentemente. Ele carregou a bola 46 vezes este ano para 254 jardas e dois touchdowns. No ano passado, Brown teve 203 corridas para 803 jardas e 11 pontuações.
A diferença, em parte, pode estar nos pass-catchers de Miami e sua linha ofensiva. Ward normalmente teve bastante tempo para lançar nos três primeiros jogos da UM, pegando apenas dois sacks. Ele não teve problemas para entregar a bola para os wide receivers do Hurricanes.
“Você tem um corpo de recepção como o nosso, você tem quatro ou cinco caras legítimos que podem ir”, disse Ward. “O que você está tentando fazer quando você pode lançar para esses caras e eles correm bem abertos. Eu só estou tentando passar a bola para os playmakers.”
Treinadores reunidos
As equipes técnicas dos Hurricanes e dos Bulls têm alguma familiaridade uma com a outra.
O técnico do Miami, Mario Cristobal, contratou o running back Matt Merritt da equipe de Alex Golesh na USF no ano passado, depois que Merritt passou uma temporada com os Bulls.
Golesh também tem alguns ex-membros da equipe de Cristobal trabalhando com ele.
O coordenador defensivo da USF, Todd Orlando, atuou como coordenador defensivo de Cristobal por duas temporadas, quando Cristobal era o treinador principal do Florida International.
Além disso, o treinador de cornerbacks do Bulls, DeMarcus Van Dyke, ex-aluno da UM, foi analista de controle de qualidade sob o comando de Cristobal em 2022.
