Uma nova pesquisa mostra que a liderança do prefeito Todd Gloria sobre o candidato à reeleição Larry Turner diminuiu significativamente desde julho, caindo de 13 pontos para 4 pontos, à medida que Turner se tornou mais conhecido por muitos prováveis eleitores.
A pesquisa, realizada na semana passada pela SurveyUSA para o The San Diego Union-Tribune e o 10 News, também mostra forte apoio à recente proibição de acampamentos para moradores de rua na cidade e à proposta do prefeito de um abrigo com quase 1.000 leitos perto do aeroporto.
A pesquisa entrevistou 668 eleitores registrados da quarta-feira passada até domingo por meio de telefones fixos, smartphones, tablets e outros dispositivos eletrônicos. Ela tem um intervalo de credibilidade de 4,9 pontos percentuais.
A liderança de Gloria sobre Turner, que era de 36% a 23% em uma pesquisa semelhante realizada em meados de julho, agora é de 37% a 33%, apenas sete semanas antes do dia da eleição, em 5 de novembro.
Mas as duas pesquisas encontraram grandes parcelas de eleitores ainda indecisos. Em julho, 36% disseram que estavam indecisos e 5% disseram que não planejavam votar. Na semana passada, 28% disseram que estão indecisos e 3% não tinham planos de votar.
A proibição atual da cidade sobre acampamentos de moradores de rua foi apoiada por 61% dos entrevistados e 27% se opôs. A proposta do prefeito para um abrigo na Kettner Boulevard e Vine Street — um plano que atraiu o escrutínio de analistas de orçamento, do procurador da cidade e de membros do conselho — foi apoiada por 71% dos entrevistados e 21% se opôs.
A pesquisa descobriu que os dois principais problemas para os eleitores continuam sendo o custo de vida, que foi listado como o principal problema por 52% dos entrevistados, e a falta de moradia, que foi listada em primeiro lugar por 27%.
Os eleitores também estão frustrados com a qualidade das estradas e calçadas da cidade, com 76% dos entrevistados dizendo que San Diego precisa se concentrar mais em consertá-las e apenas 21% dizendo que a cidade está fazendo o suficiente.
O aumento do apoio a Turner ocorre porque os eleitores se tornaram mais familiarizados com o ex-policial e se registraram como independentes.
Em julho, 30% dos eleitores disseram que não estavam nem um pouco familiarizados com Turner, enquanto outros 34% disseram que não estavam muito familiarizados com ele. Na semana passada, a parcela dos que não estavam nem um pouco familiarizados com ele caiu para 23%, e os que não estavam muito familiarizados caíram para 31%.
“Nossa campanha ganhou um tremendo ímpeto à medida que mais eleitores aprendem sobre minha visão para San Diego”, disse Turner em um comunicado à imprensa sobre a nova pesquisa. “É evidente que os moradores estão insatisfeitos com a direção que a cidade vem tomando sob a prefeita Gloria. As pessoas estão cansadas de promessas vazias e querem um prefeito que entregue resultados reais.”
A gerente de campanha de Gloria, Jen Tierney, expressou ceticismo sobre a nova pesquisa com base em uma pesquisa semelhante realizada em 2020, também conduzida pela SurveyUSA.
“Em setembro de 2020, a Survey USA mostrou Todd perdendo a corrida para prefeito por três pontos, uma corrida que ele acabou vencendo por 12”, disse ela, referindo-se à vitória de Gloria no segundo turno de 2020 sobre a oponente Barbara Bry. “Tenho muito mais fé em nossa própria pesquisa, que mostra Todd com uma liderança confortável. Independentemente disso, Todd vence trabalhando como se estivesse atrás, não importa o que a pesquisa diga, e é assim que ele vencerá mais quatro anos como prefeito.”
Gloria, uma democrata, detém uma grande vantagem entre os eleitores que se descrevem como liberais, aqueles que votaram no presidente Biden em 2020 e outros democratas.
Ele tem uma vantagem menor entre os eleitores que dizem que a falta de moradia é o problema mais importante enfrentado pela cidade, entre aqueles que alugam suas casas e entre aqueles com baixa renda familiar.
Gloria também tem forte apoio entre pessoas de 35 a 49 anos, latinos, pais de crianças menores de 18 anos e aqueles que frequentaram alguma faculdade.
Turner tem uma vantagem significativa entre os eleitores que dizem que a imigração é a questão mais importante, eleitores conservadores, republicanos, eleitores de renda média e aqueles que votaram para reeleger Donald Trump em 2020.
A insatisfação pode estar ajudando Turner na corrida.
Dos entrevistados, 49% dizem que a vida em San Diego piorou nos últimos anos, e mais eleitores apoiam Turner do que Gloria.
Os que votaram em Turner estão particularmente pessimistas, com 68% dizendo que a vida em San Diego piorou, 12% dizendo que a vida está melhorando e 17% dizendo que está quase a mesma coisa que antes.
Os que votaram em Glória estão mais divididos sobre essa questão, com 25% dizendo que a vida está melhorando, 23% dizendo que está piorando e 48% dizendo que continua praticamente a mesma.
