A programação do segundo ano do New/Next Film Festival trará diversas estreias mundiais para Baltimore no mês que vem, quando será exibido nas telas do The Charles Theatre em Station North, de 3 a 6 de outubro.
A estreia mundial de “Messy”, do cineasta nova-iorquino Alexi Wasser — descrito em um comunicado à imprensa como uma “comédia sexual neurótica sobre uma viciada em amor promíscuo chamada Stella”, interpretada por Wasser — dará início ao festival na noite de abertura.
A exibição será a estreia de Wasser na direção de um longa-metragem e será seguida por uma festa na The Metro Gallery com KJ Rothweiler e Curtis Everett Pawley, do The Ion Pack, podcasters que desempenham papéis coadjuvantes no filme.
O festival apresentado pela Baltimore Public Media também contará com estreias mundiais de “Softshell”, de Jinho Myung, uma comédia dramática tailandesa-americana, e “Removal of the Eye”, uma comédia de humor negro de Prashanth Kamalakanthan e Artemis Shaw, de acordo com um comunicado à imprensa de segunda-feira.
Haverá estreias em festivais nos EUA da comédia romântica de Eugene Kotlyarenko chamada “The Code”, um documentário sobre o sonho americano intitulado “The Dells” de Nellie Kluz e uma comédia noir de Neal Wynne, “The Trick”.
“Todas essas estreias são descobertas emocionantes de diferentes maneiras”, disse o cofundador e diretor de programação da New/Next, Eric Allen Hatch, no anúncio de segunda-feira. “Todos são projetos verdadeiramente independentes e excepcionalmente elaborados, cada um com sua própria abordagem única de estética, gênero e forma.”
O festival New/Next começou em 2023 após o anúncio do Festival de Cinema de Maryland no ano anterior de que adiaria seu evento anual para 2024.
O Maryland Film Festival realmente retornou, e o New/Next Film Festival está voltando para um segundo ano “maior e ainda melhor”, disse Hatch em abril. Hatch foi anteriormente o diretor de programação do Maryland Film Festival.
Além das estreias em festivais mundiais e nos EUA, a programação New/Next inclui filmes como “The Black Sea”, de Crystal Moselle e Derrick B. Harden, que estreou no South by Southwest; o suspense com estreia em Cannes “Gazer”, do diretor Ryan J. Sloan e da corroteirista e estrela Ariella Mastroianni; e um longa narrativo chamado “Jimmy”, de Yashaddai Owens, sobre as primeiras viagens de James Baldwin para fora do país, que estreou no Festival de Cinema de Telluride.
A programação diária de exibições do festival de cinema ainda não foi divulgada, mas os passes de acesso total estão disponíveis online e custam US$ 175 (US$ 150 para membros do WTMD e do WYPR). Os ingressos também estão à venda para a exibição da noite de abertura de “Messy”, a exibição da noite de abertura mais festa, e uma exibição de revival do filme de Gabriel Axel de 1987 “Babette’s Feast”.
