MIAMI — Toda a costa do Golfo da Flórida poderá sentir os ventos fortes, as intensas ondas de tempestade e as chuvas torrenciais da tempestade tropical Helene já na quarta-feira, com o sistema de fortalecimento previsto para atingir algum lugar ao longo da área de Big Bend menos de dois dias depois como uma poderosa categoria 3.
A previsão mais recente do National Hurricane Center para o sistema mostrou que a tempestade tropical Helene está a caminho de entrar no Golfo do México, potencialmente passando pela Península de Yucatán em seu caminho. De lá, Helene deve se fortalecer rapidamente para um grande furacão antes de atingir a costa na quinta-feira à noite ou no início da sexta-feira de manhã.
Em sua trajetória atual, que ainda pode mudar, o poderoso núcleo da tempestade pode cruzar diretamente sobre a capital do estado, Tallahassee.
Mas chuvas torrenciais e ventos fortes eram esperados para varrer grande parte da península nos próximos dias. Avisos de furacões e tempestades tropicais cobriram a maior parte da costa oeste da Flórida, até as Keys e o interior até Orlando, e alertas de tempestades tropicais cobrem a maior parte da costa leste. O governador Ron DeSantis expandiu o estado de emergência para 61 dos 67 condados da Flórida.
As evacuações obrigatórias começaram em condados próximos à área de Big Bend, incluindo Gulf e Franklin — onde comunidades costeiras podem ver de 3 a 4,5 metros de maré de tempestade, potencialmente capaz de inundar ou destruir prédios e afogar pessoas que não conseguirem fugir — assim como no sul, nos condados de Manatee e Charlotte.
Em uma coletiva de imprensa na terça-feira de manhã, DeSantis disse que o estado mobilizou soldados da Guarda Nacional da Flórida, equipes de busca e resgate, membros da Guarda Estadual da Flórida e equipes da Florida Fish and Wildlife. Eletricistas de serviços públicos já estão se instalando em locais estratégicos por todo o estado. A Florida State University e a Florida A&M University em Tallahassee também anunciaram que estavam fechando os campi a partir de quarta-feira antes de Helene.
A FEMA também enviou equipes para a Flórida, junto com recursos como geradores, alimentos e água. E DeSantis disse que o estado solicitou uma declaração de emergência pré-aterrissagem da FEMA, que desbloqueia ajuda e reembolsos para governos.
“Para o estado da Flórida, ligamos tudo desde ontem. Estamos balançando e rolando”, ele disse. “Ainda há alguma incerteza, mas acho que o fato de que isso seria previsto como uma grande (tempestade) sem formação mostra que isso tem potencial para ser uma tempestade realmente muito significativa.”
O diretor da Divisão de Gerenciamento de Emergências, Kevin Guthrie, disse que as pessoas devem se preparar agora e obedecer às ordens de evacuação das autoridades locais.
“Você pode se esconder do vento”, disse DeSantis. “Mas é a água que pode ser muito, muito devastadora se você permanecer lá quando lhe disserem para evacuar.”
Tempestade com risco de vida
Helene deve ser uma tempestade muito grande, “quase duas vezes maior que Debby e Idalia, com possivelmente um núcleo mais forte”, postou Michael Lowry, especialista em furacões da WPLG-TV, no Twitter. O centro de furacões observou que Helene deve ter um campo de vento maior do que 90% de outros grandes furacões.
Espera-se que o campo de vento e as faixas de chuva de Helene se estendam por mais de 140 milhas a leste do olho. Isso significa que o impacto chegará bem para o interior, disse Jamie Rhome, vice-diretor do centro de furacões, em um briefing na terça-feira de manhã. Para simplificar, espera-se que os próximos dias sejam uma bagunça para grande parte do estado — e um desastre potencial para áreas próximas ao desembarque e na zona de surto.
“Vai ser uma grande tempestade. E eu quero dizer grande em termos de tamanho, não de intensidade. Grandes tempestades causam grandes problemas”, ele disse.
“A faixa de vento será enorme com este sistema e basicamente abrirá um caminho sobre uma boa parte da península da Flórida, incluindo o corredor I-4 altamente povoado.”
A ameaça mais significativa de Helene, que deve ser uma tempestade ampla, poderosa e de movimento rápido, será a tempestade de maré. Uma tempestade maior move mais água para a costa, aumentando o risco de casas destruídas e números de ondas de risco de vida.
Helene pode trazer tempestades para toda a costa oeste — até 4,5 metros acima do solo, perto do solo, nos condados de Taylor e Dixie, e até 2,4 metros na região da Baía de Tampa.
Combinado com grandes quantidades de chuva em áreas que já estão encharcadas, como o sudoeste da Flórida, Helene provavelmente trará inundações. Seis polegadas de chuva podem cobrir a costa oeste, com até 8 polegadas perto da Baía de Tampa e da área de Big Bend.
O sul da Flórida pode começar a ver vários centímetros de chuva e rajadas de ventos fortes já na quarta-feira à noite, à medida que a ampla tempestade avança pela costa, espalhando seus impactos para o leste do olho e para o interior de onde eventualmente atingirá a costa.
Conforme Helene entra no Golfo do México, os meteorologistas esperam que ela se intensifique rapidamente de uma tempestade tropical de baixo nível para um furacão intenso de categoria 3 em menos de dois dias. As condições parecem maduras para isso — águas mais quentes do que o normal, baixo cisalhamento do vento e outras condições favoráveis a tempestades pavimentam o caminho para Helene assim que ele entra no Golfo. As águas superquentes da corrente de loop no Golfo podem ajudar a alimentar seu poder.
Na atualização das 17h EDT, a tempestade tropical Helene tinha ventos sustentados de 50 mph e estava a cerca de 150 milhas ao sul da ponta oeste de Cuba. Ela estava indo para oeste-noroeste a 12 mph.
