“Temos que aproveitar o momento”, diz o treinador da UCF, Gus Malzahn.
Literalmente, figurativamente, simbolicamente, os UCF Knights podem mostrar no sábado se estão prontos para o horário nobre, ou melhor, o horário nobre.
Deion Sanders — o homem que já foi conhecido como “Primetime”, mas agora prefere ser chamado de “Coach Prime” — estará em Orlando e com ele virão todos os olhares, as conversas, as controvérsias e as avaliações da TV.
Se fosse qualquer outro treinador com um time de futebol medíocre vindo para a cidade, ninguém realmente se importaria, exceto os próprios fãs da UCF. Mas porque é o Coach Prime, TODO MUNDO se importa. Ame-o ou odeie-o, o Coach Prime não pode ser ignorado, e esta semana certamente não é exceção.
“O futebol universitário é entretenimento e ele traz vigor e atenção para nossa liga”, diz Malzahn.
Essa é a principal razão pela qual o Big Noon Kickoff Pregame Show da Fox será transmitido ao vivo do campus da UCF no sábado, graças, em parte, ao comissário da Big 12, Brett Yormark, aos dirigentes da UCF e ao próprio Deion, que pressionaram os executivos esportivos da Fox para levar sua versão do ESPN GameDay ao novo e próspero mercado da Big 12 em Orlando.
E embora os olhos da nação estejam sempre fixos em Deion, esta é a grande chance da UCF roubar a cena e se tornar relevante nacionalmente mais uma vez.
Vamos encarar, faz anos que a UCF não está no cenário nacional e seu programa estava sendo discutido pelos Finebaums e Herbstreits do mundo. A última vez que isso aconteceu foi quando o GameDay chegou à cidade em 2018, em meio à segunda temporada regular consecutiva invicta dos Knights.

Lembre-se dos milhares e milhares de fãs carregando cartazes ao redor do GameDay no Memory Mall, no meio do campus da UCF, e de um Kirk Herbstreit confuso perguntando: “Este é um recorde de placas?”
Naquela época, porém, a UCF era percebida como um pequeno e irritante programa do Grupo dos 5 que irritou o establishment ao se autoproclamar campeões nacionais no ano anterior. Os Knights carregavam um ressentimento naquela época porque não conseguiam sentir o cheiro do playoff porque o formato de quatro times não passava de um convite do Power 5.
Como dizia um cartaz durante a aparição do GameDay na UCF em 2018: “Eu tinha uma placa melhor, mas o Comitê de Playoffs não deixou entrar!”
Agora é diferente.
Agora, o Comitê de Playoffs precisa deixar a UCF entrar se os treinadores e jogadores cuidarem dos negócios em campo.
Os Knights agora fazem parte da nova ordem do futebol universitário e podem mostrar à nação que são candidatos legítimos para vencer o Big 12 e ganhar uma vaga automática no playoff de 12 times.
Este é um grande momento não apenas para o programa da UCF, mas para Malzahn como seu treinador. Gus frequentemente diz que a UCF é “o futuro do futebol universitário” — e agora é sua chance de provar seu ponto para fãs de futebol universitário e recrutas em todo o país.
Os Knights supostamente terão mais recrutas neste jogo do que já tiveram em sua história. Não se engane, esta é uma oportunidade inacreditável de deixar uma impressão indelével em muitos dos melhores recrutas do estado, destacar a energia do dia do jogo no Bounce House e persuadir esses prospectos de que a UCF é o lugar para estar.
Também é uma oportunidade de continuar construindo a exposição nacional que começou há dois sábados quando os Knights, em um jogo nacional do horário nobre da Fox, se recuperaram de um déficit de três touchdowns para vencer um thriller na estrada em TCU. Agora vem o jogo nacional de sábado na Fox. E na próxima semana, a nação estará assistindo ao jogo da UCF contra a Flórida no que pode ser o jogo final de Billy Napier como técnico dos Gators.
Esta sequência de jogos tem a chance de ser um momento decisivo na história do programa; uma chance para a UCF sair das sombras e entrar no centro das atenções; uma chance de mostrar aos esnobes da Big Ten e da SEC que a UCF também pode jogar um futebol físico e de garotos grandes.
Há uma razão pela qual os Knights são os favoritos por 15 pontos contra o Colorado: eles lideram o país em corridas, correm com a bola em sua direção e desafiam você a pará-los.
Agora é a hora de passar pela defesa do Colorado e aproveitar essa janela de oportunidade.
A UCF tem tudo o que precisa para dar esse passo.
Eles têm talento.
Eles têm o treinamento.
Eles têm a atenção da nação.
