Ele está divagando? Indiferente ao seu público? Exibindo sintomas de declínio cognitivo? Ou, em vez disso, os discursos extensos do ex-presidente Donald Trump poderiam demonstrar sua genialidade — uma habilidade, como ele diz, de “tecer” histórias díspares em uma bela tapeçaria?
O estilo de falar incoerente do candidato republicano de 78 anos — e o que isso pode dizer sobre seu estado mental — se tornou uma nova fixação em uma disputa já abalada quando o presidente Joe Biden, 81, desistiu neste verão em meio a questionamentos sobre sua própria idade e acuidade mental.
Nas últimas semanas, Trump disse que deportaria imigrantes haitianos em Springfield, Ohio, “de volta para a Venezuela”. Ele disse que estava sendo apoiado pela “família do vice-presidente” — ou seja, parentes do governador de Minnesota, Tim Walz, que está concorrendo ao cargo, mas não é vice-presidente.
Ele insistiu — incorretamente — que havia sofrido um acidente de helicóptero com o ex-prefeito de São Francisco Willie Brown. Trump repetidamente lançou críticas ao ex-presidente Obama, quando seu verdadeiro alvo parecia ser o presidente Biden, declarações falsas que ele insistiu serem “sarcasmo”.
Em agosto, o site Stat News, focado em ciência e saúde, publicou uma análise detalhada dos padrões de discurso de Trump nos últimos meses, comparando-os com discursos públicos em 2017. Vários pesquisadores notaram “mais frases curtas, ordem de palavras confusa e repetição, juntamente com digressões prolongadas”.
Essas mudanças “podem ser atribuídas a uma variedade de causas possíveis”, os especialistas disseram à Stat, “algumas benignas e outras mais preocupantes. Elas incluem mudanças de humor, um desejo de atrair certos públicos, envelhecimento natural ou o início de uma condição cognitiva como a doença de Alzheimer.”
James Pennebaker, um psicólogo social da Universidade do Texas em Austin, realizou uma análise mais formal para a Stat com base em transcrições completas de 35 entrevistas de Trump de 2015 até este ano. Usando software estatístico, ele encontrou um aumento de aproximadamente 60% no uso de termos absolutos como “sempre”, “nunca” e “completamente”.
O diálogo recente de Trump também continha menos palavras positivas. O aumento do pensamento de tudo ou nada também pode ser vinculado a mudanças na capacidade cognitiva, escreveu Pennebaker, acrescentando: “Outra pessoa cujo pensamento de tudo ou nada aumentou é Biden.”
Na semana passada, críticos de esquerda fizeram piquetes na sede do New York Times, exigindo que a mídia parasse de “lavar o bom senso” das declarações desconexas de Trump.
Kathleen Hall Jamieson, cofundadora do FactCheck.org e diretora do Annenberg Public Policy Center da Universidade da Pensilvânia, disse em uma entrevista que “sempre houve a pergunta: Donald Trump está em contato com uma realidade conhecível?”
O estilo de falar de Trump, ela disse, sempre foi definido por fanfarronice e exagero, mas, atualmente, ele está fazendo mais comentários que são completamente bizarros. “Ele está fazendo isso mais agora do que no passado”, ela disse. “Ele é mais tangencial.”
Jamieson disse que os americanos precisam fazer duas perguntas sobre sua capacidade de se comunicar: “Isso diz algo importante sobre sua capacidade como presidente? E isso deve ser levado em consideração em nossos votos ou não?”
Trump deixou claro que está ciente das críticas, defendendo seu estilo de falar repetidamente nas últimas semanas. Ele garantiu em um comício na Pensilvânia que até mesmo professores de inglês se maravilham com a intrincada “trama” de sua narrativa. Ele culpou a “mídia de notícias falsas” por deturpar intencionalmente seus floreios sarcásticos para alegar que ele sofria de deficiência cognitiva.
Falando em Savannah, Geórgia, na terça-feira, Trump falou sobre o estado mental de Biden e questionou a competência da vice-presidente Kamala Harris.
“Você fala sobre problemas cognitivos? Ela tem problemas cognitivos maiores do que [Biden] tem”, disse ele.
A porta-voz da campanha de Trump, Karoline Leavitt, disse ao The Times que reportagens sobre acuidade mental criariam “um artigo lixo baseado em um monte de ‘fontes’ que não têm ideia do que estão falando e estão tentando desviar a atenção do fato de que nosso presidente em exercício, Joe Biden, foi expulso da chapa democrata devido ao seu claro declínio cognitivo”.
“O presidente Trump é muito afiado”, acrescentou Leavitt, “e executa uma agenda de campanha rigorosa todos os dias”.
Trump sugeriu em um comício em Tucson neste mês que não eram apenas seus inimigos questionando seu comportamento no palco. Ele disse que ligou para a ex-primeira-dama Melania Trump, que tinha assistido a um discurso recente na televisão, e perguntou se ela “viu o quão ótimo foi meu discurso esta noite, querida”. As pessoas adoraram, ele disse que contou a ela.
“Bem, sim, eles podem, mas você parece muito mal”, Trump disse que ela respondeu. “Você não conseguiu encontrar as escadas do palco.”
Fingindo exasperação, ele disse que teve que explicar à esposa que estava brincando — que estava imitando Biden, mas que “as notícias falsas” estavam distorcendo seu sarcasmo.
Os apoiadores de Trump pedem uma interpretação mais generosa quando se trata de Trump no palanque: eles dizem que vão aos comícios do ex-astro de reality show sabendo que ele vai entreter — inclusive com comentários que desafiam as convenções e voos de fantasia, como quando ele refletiu sobre se seria preferível morrer por ataque de tubarão ou eletrocussão. Para os adeptos do MAGA, esses momentos oferecem mais provas de que seu herói é direto. Real. Ao contrário de Harris e outros políticos grudados em seus teleprompters.
Em meio a perguntas sobre seu estilo de falar, a analista de mídia Jamieson pediu aos jornalistas que deixassem Trump ser Trump, mas em um sentido diferente. Ela disse que os repórteres deveriam abandonar o imperativo jornalístico tradicional de brevidade e simplicidade e citar Trump na íntegra, revelando como ele realmente se expressa.
Um bom lugar para começar nesse sentido pode ser a defesa de Trump de suas caminhadas verbais durante uma reunião pública na semana passada em Michigan com a governadora do Arkansas, Sarah Huckabee Sanders:
“Eu tenho que dizer, então eu dou essas frases e parágrafos longos, às vezes muito complexos, mas todos eles se juntam. Eu faço isso muito. Eu faço isso com Raising Caine, essa história. Ele continuou, falando sobre automóveis:
“O ponto principal é, eu disse, a coisa mais importante: vamos trazer mais fábricas para o seu estado e para este país para fazer automóveis. Seremos maiores do que antes. Mas as notícias falsas — e há muitas delas lá atrás, você sabe, para uma prefeitura; isso é muita gente. Mas as notícias falsas gostam de dizer, as notícias falsas gostam de dizer, ‘Oh, ele estava divagando.’ Não, não, isso não é divagação. Isso é genialidade. Quando você consegue conectar os pontos.

A campanha de Harris, no X, citou os comentários de Trump sem comentários.
Preocupações sobre aptidão mental e idade têm sido uma característica da política presidencial há muito tempo. A mídia questionou se Bob Dole e Ronald Reagan eram velhos demais para servir como executivos-chefes.
O assunto se tornou mais proeminente em 2020, quando Trump e Biden concorreram como dois dos candidatos mais velhos a buscar a presidência. Trump desafiou Biden a fazer um exame cognitivo, gabando-se de que ele próprio havia passado em tal teste, em parte por se lembrar de uma sequência de palavras: “Pessoa. Mulher. Homem. Câmera. TV.”
(Especialistas disseram que o exame parecia com a Avaliação Cognitiva de Montreal, ou MoCA, que é usada para detecção precoce de comprometimento cognitivo leve.)
Em 2024, o andar rígido de Biden e o afeto às vezes distraído levantaram novamente a questão da cognição geriátrica. O tópico se tornou inevitável quando ele e Trump debateram em junho, com os pensamentos incompletos e o olhar vago de Biden disparando alarmes entre os democratas. Biden logo abandonou sua campanha de reeleição.
Desde então, os democratas têm exigido saber por que o comportamento público de Trump não recebeu tanto escrutínio, observando que ele teria 82 anos ao final de outro mandato na Casa Branca. Os críticos apontam para suas diatribes de “salada de palavras” e sua identificação errônea de jogadores-chave — por exemplo, dizendo que foi a ex-embaixadora da ONU Nikki Haley que não fez o suficiente para defender o Capitólio dos EUA durante a insurreição de 6 de janeiro de 2021, quando ele se referia à então presidente da Câmara, Nancy Pelosi.
A equipe de Trump deixou claro que não isentará sua atual oponente, Harris, de 59 anos, de críticas cognitivas.
Vídeos dos trechos sonoros às vezes sinuosos de Harris se tornaram um grampo dos críticos do Partido Republicano. Isso inclui a vez em que Harris fez uma referência obscura a cair de um coqueiro e sua fala frequentemente repetida sobre estar “aliviada pelo que foi”. Anteriormente alimento para detratores, esses mesmos momentos foram remixados por fãs de Harris em vídeos elogiosos do TikTok, memes do Instagram e produtos do Etsy.
Antes de Biden e Trump, a mídia tendia a tratar a aptidão mental de aspirantes a presidentes com cautela. Parte dessa cautela demonstrava um desejo por objetividade, mas parte também refletia o medo de duplicar o que aconteceu com Barry Goldwater, o senador republicano do Arizona, quando concorreu à presidência em 1964.
Um artigo na extinta revista Fact — intitulado: “1.189 psiquiatras dizem que Goldwater é psicologicamente inapto para ser presidente!” — citou uma pesquisa informal com psiquiatras dos EUA, nenhum dos quais realmente conheceu Goldwater.
Após perder de forma esmagadora para Lyndon B. Johnson, Goldwater processou com sucesso a revista por difamação. A American Psychiatric Assn. então produziu a “Goldwater Rule”, que afirma que é “antiético para um psiquiatra oferecer uma opinião profissional a menos que ele ou ela tenha conduzido um exame e tenha recebido autorização adequada para tal declaração”.
Como resultado, os psiquiatras de hoje geralmente hesitam em emitir diagnósticos de poltrona.
O Dr. Zaldy Tan, diretor do Memory and Healthy Aging Program no Cedars-Sinai Medical Center em Los Angeles, observou que os sócios em escritórios de advocacia às vezes são obrigados a fazer avaliações neurológicas. Não existe tal exigência na política. E quais seriam os padrões?
“Acho que a dificuldade seria traçar a linha entre o que é preconceituoso e o que é realmente justo”, disse Tan. “E a avaliação dependeria das tarefas que são consideradas importantes”, o que, ele disse, também seria difícil de concordar.
Jamieson recomendou que os eleitores estudassem os candidatos de perto e tentassem separar o comportamento de real preocupação de incidentes triviais. Na última categoria, Jamieson incluiu nomes errados de indivíduos e se gabar sobre o tamanho da multidão. Muitas pessoas escorregam na identificação de outras pessoas, ela disse. E Trump tem uma longa história de ostentação.
Outros comentários, ela disse, merecem mais atenção, incluindo a alegação de Trump de que o tamanho do público de Harris foi falsificado pelo uso de imagens geradas por inteligência artificial.
“Se ele realmente acredita nisso”, disse Jamieson, “então ele está delirando”.
