Um atacadista de facas cujas armas foram usadas em vários assassinatos entregou mais de 35.000 lâminas “zumbis”.
A polícia disse que as facas e facões foram projetados para “matar e mutilar”.
Sob um esquema de rendição do governo, a Sporting Wholesale, sediada em Luton, receberá £ 10 de indenização por cada faca.
A empresa disse que não comentaria.
O superintendente Alex House, que lidera os crimes com facas na polícia de Bedfordshire, disse que as facas e facões “não tinham outra utilidade” além de serem armas.
“Não há outro uso prático para eles”, ele disse à BBC. “Se você olhar para o design… o propósito é matar e mutilar.”
As facas zumbis foram proibidas pela primeira vez em 2016, mas uma nova, definição mais ampla projetada para proibir mais lâminas entrará em vigor na Inglaterra e no País de Gales em 24 de setembro.
A partir de então, será ilegal possuir uma faca com lâmina afiada maior que 20 cm (8 pol.), se ela também tiver outras características, incluindo:
- Uma lâmina de corte serrilhada
- Mais de um furo na lâmina
- Picos
- Mais de duas pontas afiadas na lâmina
As armas serão trituradas e seu metal reciclado por uma empresa especializada.
O Sr. House acrescentou que era uma “quantidade horrível de facas”.
“O fato de termos todos eles aqui e eles serem destruídos certamente salvará vidas.”
A Sporting Wholesale importava facas a granel e vendia para varejistas. Ela é dona da marca de facas Anglo Arms, que a empresa admitiu em 2021 ter ganhado um “reputação com gangues“.
A empresa disse no início deste ano que “nos últimos cinco a seis anos, o crime com faca aumentou”. Ela acrescentou “como resultado… reduzimos a linha Anglo Arms para cobrir apenas facas práticas e tradicionais”.
Eddy Eliaz é o diretor administrativo e principal acionista da empresa.
Seu irmão mais novo, Adam Eliaz, é o diretor e principal acionista da DNA Leisure, uma varejista online, localizada no mesmo parque industrial. A DNA Leisure também entregou 1.542 facas.
Ambas as empresas anunciaram em junho que não venderiam mais facas além do estoque atual.
Uma publicação no site da Sporting Wholesale dizia que “depois de fornecer produtos de cutelaria e arco e flecha ao mercado por mais de 20 anos”, era “triste dizer que a Sporting Wholesale Ltd está encerrando a venda desses itens”.
A empresa acrescentou que uma última remessa dos produtos deveria ser entregue, “mas nenhum novo pedido será feito”.
“Isso tudo é muito lamentável, mas o Reino Unido agora não é um lugar onde esses itens podem ser vendidos abertamente”, continuou.
O movimento seguiu cobertura da imprensa no mês anterior à condenação de Rayis Nibeel e cúmplice do assassinato de Omar Khan em Luton.
Em 2023, Nibeel comprou 79 facas e facões da DNA Leisure, apesar de ter apenas 16 anos. Ele usou a identidade de um membro da família para comprar as lâminas online em 13 transações separadas.
A DNA Leisure disse que a Nibeel cometeu “fraude” e que a empresa usou um “correio com idade verificada” para fazer as entregas.
A faca que matou o Sr. Khan foi vendida como parte de um par pela DNA Leisure, que as descreveu como o “conjunto de facas de lâmina fixa estilo baioneta Anglo Arms”. Em abril deste ano, um conjunto semelhante estava sendo vendido por £ 29,95 pela DNA.
Ferimento de facão da Anglo Arms mata jovem de 14 anos Gordon Gault após um ataque em novembro de 2022 em Newcastle. Dois adolescentes foram presos por homicídio culposo.
Um julgamento por assassinato também ouviu como uma faca com trava de bala da Anglo Arms foi usada para esfaquear fatalmente Joshua Clark e Haidar Shah em Halifax em outubro de 2023.
Desses ataques, apenas a arma usada para assassinar Omar Khan está sendo proibida.
Houve críticas de que a nova proibição, que foi concebida pelo anterior governo conservador, não vai longe o suficiente.
Em 9 de setembro, o governo trabalhista realizou uma cume em Downing Street focado em crimes com facas. Disse que estava considerando uma proibição adicional de espadas ninja e tornando mais difícil comprar armas perigosas online.
A polícia de Bedfordshire disse que também está trabalhando para combater o mercado negro, que pode ser reforçado pela proibição mais rigorosa.
Inspetor-detetive Graham Newton, da unidade antigangues da polícia, disse que, embora a mudança na lei sobre facas zumbis fosse bem-vinda, ele estava ciente de que “assim como acontece com outros itens proibidos, haverá algumas pessoas que tentarão obter lucro criminoso”.
Ele prometeu que os detetives seriam tão “inventivos” na tentativa de capturar vendedores ilegais quanto os próprios vendedores.
“Precisamos acabar com as facas na fonte e depois acabar com a violência que acontece nas ruas.”
Si Philbert, um jovem praticante da Wingman Mentors e da St Giles Trust, disse que, embora a nova proibição “não seja suficiente”, é “um começo” e “já deveria ter acontecido”.
Wingman trabalha com a Unidade de Redução de Violência e Exploração financiada pelo Ministério do Interior de Bedfordshire para tentar prevenir crimes com facas.
“Se as facas zumbis não existissem”, acrescentou o Sr. Philbert, 49, “ainda teríamos um problema com crimes com facas”.
O Sr. Philbert disse que “nove em cada dez” jovens carregam facas por medo.
Ele disse que encorajou os jovens a “mudar seu ambiente” de uma “zona de guerra” para um “espaço mais seguro… onde eles não sintam que precisam se proteger”.
“Se você puder evitar que eles peguem numa faca, é melhor do que simplesmente proibir as facas.”
O esquema de entrega de facas zumbis está aberto até o final de 23 de setembro.
