O Departamento de Polícia de St. Paul disse que o médico legista do condado de Ramsey identificou Carrie Shobe Kwok como a mulher morta enquanto trabalhava em um mural perto da Cooperativa de Artistas Lowertown Lofts, onde ela e outros artistas viviam.
O chefe de polícia, Axel Henry, disse em entrevista coletiva na quinta-feira que não há indicação de que Kwok conhecesse o atirador, acrescentando que a morte dela foi um dos atos mais descarados que ele viu em 30 anos de policiamento.
“[This killing is] uma das coisas mais frias que já vi na minha vida. E como, o que parece ser agora, um ato aleatório realizado de uma maneira como essa – eu nunca vi nada parecido nem mesmo em um filme. É horrível”, disse Henry. “À medida que as provas forem surgindo nos próximos dias, espero que aproveitemos isto como uma oportunidade para realmente rever a seriedade que levamos como Estado e como país relativamente aos tipos de violência que se tornaram demasiado comuns.”
A morte de Kwok ocorre dias antes do St. Paul Fall Art Crawl, um evento anual que apresenta trabalhos de artistas de Lowertown e Minnesota. Em comunicado, os organizadores do evento disseram que esperam honrar a memória de Kwok.
“Sua paixão pela criatividade nos lembra do papel essencial que a arte desempenha em nossa comunidade – ela nos conecta, nos cura e nos permite expressar nossas emoções mais profundas”, disse o diretor executivo do St. Paul Art Collective, Mariusz Kujawski, em um comunicado. “Vamos nos unir para celebrar não apenas a arte que ela criou, mas também as contribuições vibrantes que cada um de vocês faz para nossa jornada artística coletiva.”
O homem suspeito de matar Kwok foi rastreado até Belle Plaine, onde os policiais de St. Paul tentaram prendê-lo. A Polícia de St. Paul disse que o homem estava armado com uma pistola quando foi confrontado pelos policiais, e dois policiais de St. Paul atiraram nele.
Ambos os policiais prestaram assistência médica ao homem antes de ele ser transportado de avião para o HCMC, onde morreu. Os policiais envolvidos naquele tiroteio foram colocados em licença administrativa padrão enquanto o Bureau de Apreensão Criminal investiga o tiroteio. Embora a polícia não tenha identificado o suspeito, um membro da família o identificou como Seantrell Murdock, 29, de Belle Plaine.
