Bad Bunny, ‘Uma Velita’
No sétimo aniversário do furacão Maria, que deixou danos duradouros em Porto Rico, Bad Bunny lançou a triste, ressentida e inflexível “Una Velita” (“Velazinha”). “Vai acontecer de novo”, ele avisa em espanhol. “Aí vem a tempestade, quem vai nos salvar?” Guitarras distantes, percussão afro-caribenha profunda e um coral o apoiam enquanto ele relembra a resposta insuficiente do governo a Maria: “Cinco mil foram deixados para morrer, e nunca esqueceremos isso.” Antes da próxima tempestade, ele clama pela proteção de Deus e por autoconfiança: “Cabe ao povo salvar o povo.”
O vício de Jane, ‘Amor verdadeiro’
A formação original reunida do Jane’s Addiction acaba de cancelar sua turnê e anunciou um hiato da banda após uma briga no palco no meio de um show em Boston. Mas isso não impediu o lançamento de “True Love”, o segundo single da banda reunida. É um tributo nada irônico, até mesmo romântico, a “se aquecer na glória do amor verdadeiro”, livre dos julgamentos de qualquer outra pessoa. O arranjo em tom menor, relativamente suave — guitarra carregada de reverb, baquetas na bateria — apenas ressalta o senso de comprometimento da música, mesmo que a banda tenha se fragmentado novamente.
Bon Iver, ‘Speyside’
Ressurgindo como Bon Iver após anos de colaborações com grandes nomes do pop — Kanye West, Taylor Swift — Justin Vernon retorna ao som acústico de seu álbum de estreia dolorido, isolado, sincero e folk, “For Emma, Forever Ago”. Ele dedilha e pega um violão e considera uma vida onde “nada realmente aconteceu como eu pensei que aconteceria”. Ele canta sobre arrependimentos, dúvidas e esperanças perdidas: “Talvez você ainda possa fazer de mim um homem”, ele oferece.
Jamie xx com Romy e Oliver Sim, ‘Esperou a Noite Toda’
“Waited All Night” reúne os três membros do xx para uma música que impulsiona o espírito de profundo anseio e incerteza ansiosa do grupo original para uma pista de dança de alta tecnologia. “Você gostaria de sentir isso/Eu poderia estar tão perto de você?” Romy canta; Sims reflete sobre “o sorriso de morrer/algo como o seu”. Enquanto eles cantam sobre a hesitação de esperar a noite toda, a produção de Jamie xx sofre mutações por meio de permutações rápidas de techno e house, incitando-os.
Yola, ‘Inimigos do Futuro’
Yola faz um ataque preventivo contra um relacionamento tentador em “Future Enemies”, já certa de que está fadada ao fracasso. “Por que não simplesmente não?/Então eu não queria nunca ter te conhecido”, ela argumenta. A música deixa claro que não é uma escolha fácil. É um soul-rock robusto e de construção lenta que a faz lamentar, rouquejar e pular até sua soprano, frustrada com seu próprio julgamento.
Mortimer com Damian Marley, ‘In My Time’
O cantor de reggae jamaicano Mortimer explora vulnerabilidade, introversão e tristezas em seu álbum de estreia, “From Within”, sobre faixas roots-reggae com toques do século XXI. Sua música de abertura, “In My Time”, coloca uma pulsação de reggae em tom menor sob blips eletrônicos. Mortimer medita sobre desinformação e racismo, enquanto Damian Marley enfrenta as manipulações da internet: “Embora você pense que tem uma escolha, eles lhe dizem o que fazer.”
Oxlade com Wande Coal, ‘Asunasa (Segure sua cintura)’
“Assim que eu seguro sua cintura, todas as minhas tristezas desaparecem”, canta o compositor nigeriano Oxlade em seu novo álbum, “OFA (Oxlade From Africa)”, ladeado por harmonias e respostas de Wande Coal. Mas não é uma situação otimista. Às vezes, o cantor tem seu “ânimo elevado”, mas em outros lugares ela está “me chamando de criminoso” e o deixa “tão viciado”. O ritmo Afrobeats é abafado, com acordes de teclado menores concisos e camadas inesperadas de sinos e tambores de mão; o tom é carente e obsessivo, longe da felicidade.
Manu Chao, ‘Rio Porquê’
Após 17 anos entre álbuns de estúdio, Manu Chao — o compositor francês, criado no Basco, poliglota e viajante — reapareceu como se nada tivesse mudado. “River Why” é do seu novo álbum, “Viva Tu”, e como seus antigos sucessos internacionais, é enxuta e cativante, construída para ser cantada junto. A base rítmica é o reggae, reduzido a loops de bateria eletrônica e violões. Talvez o título da música seja uma referência ao filme de guerra de 1957 “A Ponte do Rio Kwai”, mas “River Why” também sugere questões existenciais e ecológicas. Antes de Chao pegar seus versos, um coro feminino canta: “Isso não é sucesso, isso não é conquista/Isso é apenas um suicídio coletivo.”
Tucker Zimmerman, ‘A Temporada’
O compositor Tucker Zimmerman, 83, vem lançando álbuns desde 1969, conquistando fãs ao longo dos anos, incluindo David Bowie e agora a banda de Adrianne Lenker, Big Thief, que o apoia em um álbum previsto para outubro, “Dance of Love”. Zimmerman e Lenker compartilham uma predileção por arranjos folk-rock e trocadilhos que podem ser enigmáticos ou engraçados. Em “The Season”, eles harmonizam — a voz desgastada dele e o quase sussurro afetuoso dela — sobre violão acústico dedilhado silenciosamente e pedal steel contido enquanto contemplam a mortalidade. “Tenho muita sorte de estar vivo”, canta Zimmerman; Lenker acrescenta, “e chutando também”.
Talking Heads com Arthur Russell, ‘Psycho Killer (versão acústica)’
Uma reedição muito expandida de “Talking Heads: 77”, o álbum de estreia da banda, inclui esta versão alternativa de “Psycho Killer”. David Byrne canta letras diferentes no segundo verso. Mas a mudança ainda mais significativa é que o arranjo familiar da banda abre caminho para o violoncelista, compositor, compositor minimalista e produtor de disco Arthur Russell. Ele se aprofunda com riffs de violoncelo grunhidos ao lado da guitarra base, então aproveita o final da música com um solo de tremolo feroz e envolvente — um verdadeiro violoncelo punk.
cumgirl8, ‘Ahhhh!hhhh! (Eu não quero ir)’
Invisíveis, introvertidas e odiadoras de festas agora têm um hino eletropop impecável. “Eu só quero ficar sozinha em casa”, as mulheres do cumgirl8 cantam em uma faixa metronômica, pulsante e com saltos de oitava que deixaria Eurythmics orgulhosa. Outras letras e um vídeo lúdico desafiam todos os tipos de estereótipos femininos. No entanto, a faixa em si facilmente animaria a festa que as cantoras não compareceriam. É complicado.
Os Armados, ‘Novo! Cristianismo’
O álbum de 2023 do The Armed, “Perfect Saviors”, trouxe uma melodia descarada ao ataque hardcore de longa data da banda. “New! Christianity” antecipa “Everlasting Gaze”, um EP previsto para outubro que é um epílogo daquele álbum. As letras — de um suposto narrador messiânico — continuam o fascínio da banda pela fé e adoração a ídolos; elas chegam como uma melodia imponente cercada por gritos de fundo e uma barragem de bateria em tempo quádruplo.
