Uma enfermeira cujo bebê de 10 semanas morreu depois que ela o deixou sozinho em casa para ir trabalhar foi presa.
Ruth Auta, 28, deixou seu filho Joshua Akerele no alojamento de enfermeiras no Royal Bolton Hospital pouco depois das 06:30 GMT de 20 de dezembro de 2022, retornando mais de oito horas depois.
Ela chamou uma ambulância às 15:24, relatando que seu filho não estava respirando. Ele foi declarado morto às 16:40, apesar das tentativas de ressuscitá-lo.
Auta, que tentou fugir do país após se declarar culpado de crueldade infantil em uma audiência judicial anterior, foi preso por três anos no Tribunal da Coroa de Bolton na terça-feira.
Nenhuma causa conclusiva da morte de Joshua pôde ser dada, e a audiência judicial concluiu que ele era um bebê saudável.
O tribunal ouviu que ele pode ter superaquecido devido às camadas de roupas e lençóis em que estava enrolado, mas outras possíveis causas de morte não puderam ser descartadas.
Auta, que não tinha residência fixa, disse inicialmente aos policiais da Grande Manchester que havia buscado Joshua com uma babá depois de terminar o trabalho em 20 de dezembro, alegando que havia adormecido ao lado dele e que o encontrou inconsciente quando acordou.
No entanto, imagens de câmeras de segurança obtidas pela polícia mostraram Auta saindo de seu apartamento sem Joshua às 06h47 e voltando para casa sozinha às 15h13.
Mensagens encontradas em seu telefone mostraram que ela pediu à babá para dizer à polícia que ela havia cuidado de Joshua naquele dia, mas a babá disse aos policiais que não via o bebê há alguns dias.
Auta foi acusado de crueldade contra uma criança e se declarou culpado em uma audiência no Tribunal de Magistrados de Manchester em 24 de maio.
O caso foi adiado para 21 de junho para sentença, mas Auta foi preso no Aeroporto de Gatwick em 6 de junho após tentar embarcar em um voo para a Nigéria com passagem só de ida.
Sara Davie, do Serviço de Promotoria da Coroa, disse: “Enquanto ela foi trabalhar para cuidar de outras pessoas, Ruth Auta deixou a pessoa que mais precisava de seus cuidados sozinha em casa.”
A Sra. Davie disse que, como enfermeira, Auta deveria saber dos perigos de deixar seu bebê sozinho e “agora deve viver com as consequências da terrível decisão que tomou naquele dia”.
Ela disse que Auta não demonstrou remorso durante o caso, além de enganar a polícia sobre seus planos de assistência à criança e tentar fugir da justiça ao tentar fugir do país.
“Nossos pensamentos e condolências estão com todos aqueles que foram afetados pela morte de Joshua”, acrescentou a Sra. Davie.
