CLEVELAND – Brian Daboll e os Giants estão fora do tatame.
Daniel Jones, Malik Nabers, Brian Burns e Dexter Lawrence, quatro dos maiores investimentos e jogadores mais importantes da franquia, se destacaram na primeira vitória da temporada no domingo, por 21 a 15, sobre o Cleveland Browns no Huntington Bank Field.
“Nós apenas dissemos (palavrão) isso”, disse Lawrence sobre a mentalidade do time. “Vamos continuar jogando bola.”
Nabers pegou dois passes para touchdown e roubou uma interceptação em um segundo quarto dominante. Jones foi quase perfeito no primeiro tempo. Burns registrou um strip sack e pressionou constantemente o quarterback de Cleveland de processamento lento, Deshaun Watson. Lawrence teve dois sacks.
A defesa de Shane Bowen teve oito sacks e segurou Cleveland a 69 jardas de corrida, se recuperando de uma dura derrota na Semana 2 em Washington. E os Giants de Daboll seguraram e melhoraram para 1-2, com uma rápida reviravolta para uma visita do Thursday Night Football do rival da NFC East, Dallas Cowboys, no MetLife Stadium.
“Todo mundo quer ver os resultados, e este é um negócio de resultados”, disse Daboll. “Eu acredito no que fazemos e como fazemos as coisas. Isso mostrou, eu acho, que em termos de estar na estrada, é dar uma acelerada lá… apenas permanecer focado e comprometido com a mentalidade da próxima jogada nem sempre dá certo. E hoje deu. Dou muito crédito aos nossos rapazes.”
Ainda houve alguns momentos de nervosismo. O ataque dos Giants ficou sem gols no segundo tempo após levar uma vantagem de 21-7 para o intervalo, e o running back Devin Singletary perdeu um fumble pelo segundo jogo consecutivo.
Watson acertou Amari Cooper para seu segundo touchdown do jogo e converteu uma bola de dois pontos para Jerry Jeudy, diminuindo a vantagem dos Giants para seis pontos com 11:33 restantes no quarto período.
Mas Watson e o running back Jerome Ford perderam um passe perto do meio-campo, e o edge rusher dos Giants, Azeez Ojulari, recuperou a bola para parar o ímpeto de Cleveland com 7:40 para o fim do jogo.
Então Kayvon Thibodeaux e Lawrence fizeram paradas de terceira e quarta descidas para virar Cleveland em descidas com 3:56 restantes na linha de 29 jardas dos Browns. Então, mesmo quando o kicker Greg Joseph errou feio um field goal de 48 jardas que poderia ter congelado o jogo com três minutos restantes, a defesa dos Giants escapou novamente em um drop de quarta descida do recebedor dos Browns, Cedric Tillman.
Burns disse que a defesa acolheu a pressão de encerrar o caso.

Precisávamos disso entrando em uma semana curta contra um adversário da divisão. É bom tirar isso do tabuleiro. Agora todo o foco está em Dallas chegando.”
Singletary oficialmente congelou o jogo com uma corrida de 43 jardas e deslizou na linha de 1 jarda dos Browns, com um lembrete de Wan’Dale Robinson, para ajudar os Giants a esgotarem o tempo em sua vitória com três ajoelhamentos em formação de vitória.
Jones, que completou 24 de 34 passes para 236 jardas, dois TDs e um rating de quarterback de 109,4, foi profissional sobre o resultado.
“É sempre bom conseguir uma vitória, não importa como ela venha”, ele disse. “A primeira é importante.”
Nabers, que pegou oito passes para 78 jardas e dois TDs, estava animado, mas comedido.
“É uma sensação boa. É uma sensação de alívio”, ele disse. “Vamos entrar no jogo na semana que vem com essa vitória nas costas. Então, em vez de entrar na semana que vem com uma derrota, é muito melhor.”
Os Giants estavam jogando atrás imediatamente devido a um desastre no pontapé inicial do jogo pela segunda semana consecutiva.
O running back Eric Gray, uma escolha de quinta rodada de Joe Schoen em 2023, perdeu o retorno e deu a bola aos Browns na linha de 24 jardas dos Giants.
Watson imediatamente acertou Cooper para um passe para touchdown de 24 jardas na primeira jogada de Cleveland do scrimmage, e os Browns lideraram por 7 a 0, apenas 11 segundos após o início do jogo.
Isso marcou o primeiro touchdown de Cleveland na primeira jogada de scrimmage em um jogo desde 20 de novembro de 2005 contra o Miami Dolphins, de acordo com a transmissão da FOX.
O ataque dos Giants então foi three-and-out e fez punt em seu primeiro drive. Mas Lawrence derrubou Watson para pegar a bola de volta no próximo drive de Cleveland.
Foi o primeiro punt forçado pela defesa dos Giants desde a Semana 1, considerando os sete drives consecutivos de pontuação de Washington, todos com field goals, na Semana 2.
Então, os Giants tiveram uma chance enorme para evitar que o mau começo se tornasse uma bola de neve.
Jones lançou uma interceptação diretamente no intestino do safety dos Browns, Ronnie Hickman. Mas o cornerback do slot de Cleveland, Greg Newsome II, foi penalizado por agredir o quarterback em seu blitz ao acertar Jones na cabeça.
Isso devolveu a bola aos Giants e deu início a um drive de 13 jogadas e 81 jardas, coroado por um touchdown de 1 jarda de Singletary, empatando o jogo em sete a sete, faltando 2:07 para o fim do primeiro quarto.
Os Giants marcaram 21 pontos sem resposta no total daquele ponto em diante, levando a vantagem de dois pontos para o quarto período, até que as coisas ficaram instáveis.
No primeiro tempo, Daboll conduziu seu ataque em torno das blitzes do coordenador defensivo dos Browns, Jim Schwartz, com passes bloqueados, e tentou o seu melhor para compensar o desequilíbrio na linha de scrimmage, mantendo as corridas e os lançamentos curtos para o lado de fora.
Daboll também demonstrou o tipo de agressividade que funcionou para ele em 2022, seu primeiro ano como treinador principal. Ele foi para um 4º e 1 na linha de 43 jardas dos Giants e converteu em um jet sweep de Nabers da esquerda para a direita por duas jardas.
“Senti que tinha o plano certo durante todo o jogo, mas não marcamos no segundo tempo”, disse Daboll. “É assim que você tem que se sentir como um chamador de jogadas. É por isso que você passou todo esse tempo colocando isso em… No final das contas, tudo se resume à execução, mas estávamos em um ritmo um pouco diferente. O quarterback estava vendo as coisas [well]. Estávamos mudando os estilos de jogo.”
O primeiro touchdown, que durou 7 minutos e 44 segundos, foi o maior touchdown dos Giants por tempo de posse de bola desde a vitória no playoff do Wild Card de 2022 em Minnesota — um field goal de 10 minutos e 52 segundos no segundo quarto contra os Vikings.
Nabers então dominou o segundo quarto de domingo.
Ele arrancou uma interceptação das mãos do cornerback do Browns, Martin Emerson Jr., pela linha lateral esquerda para um ganho de 28 jardas. Então ele fez uma recepção de TD de 3 jardas para fechar um drive de touchdown de 93 jardas para uma liderança de 14-7 com 1:44 para jogar no primeiro tempo.
Então Burns derrubou Watson e devolveu a bola ao ataque dos Giants, e Nabers finalizou o ataque com outra recepção para touchdown de cinco jardas, abrindo uma vantagem de 14 pontos no intervalo.
Dustin Hopkins, de Cleveland, errou um field goal de 53 jardas no terceiro quarto após o fumble perdido de Singletary, mantendo os Browns atrás por dois pontos rumo ao quarto período, onde os Giants seguraram sua primeira vitória desesperadamente necessária.
“Então, Brian Burns, como é começar a temporada devagar e depois fazer o que você fez hoje?” Thibodeaux disse para dar início à entrevista de Burns em seu armário. “Os fãs achavam que você era péssimo, e agora acham que você é ótimo. O que você tem a dizer sobre isso?”
