PHOENIX – Dificilmente deveria importar qual arremessador inicial receberá a bola para os Padres contra os Diamondbacks no domingo, pelo 162º e último jogo da temporada.
Qualquer braço serviria.
A equipe conquistou a primeira posição do Wild Card na abertura da série no Chase Field e sediará uma série começando na terça-feira no Petco Park.
Este é um luxo delicioso do beisebol, jogar bem o suficiente, com freqüência suficiente, para usar os últimos dias para descansar os braços da linha de frente e configurar a rotação para os playoffs.
O fato é que isso importa muito na sede do clube dos Padres.
Eles nunca se esqueceram de Matt Waldron, sua dança knuckleball e as entradas que ele engoliu enquanto o time firmava as pernas e descobria o caminho.
Waldron foi mais do que simplesmente um contribuidor. Ele manteve a linha até a chegada da cavalaria. Ele era uma peça crucial do quebra-cabeça necessária para completar um quadro maior. Ele é o cara que os companheiros de equipe desejavam que estivesse aqui, pois todo aquele trabalho fundamental rendeu frutos inebriantes.
Os Padres ainda poderiam escolher um jogador, digamos o titular do jogo 161, Randy Vasquez, e colocar a bola nas mãos de Waldron.
Eles ainda podiam. E deveria.
Raramente, uma decisão sobre um jogo com tão poucas implicações reais ou duradouras provocaria um abalo no clube. Este seria, no entanto.
“Wally, quero dizer, ele foi um dos arremessadores mais consistentes que tivemos por um longo período”, disse Dylan Cease sobre Waldron, que registrou o terceiro maior número de entradas nesta temporada com 142 2/3. “Ele carregava muito peso. Definitivamente muito importante para a equipe.”
O colega titular Joe Musgrove disse que seus companheiros conversaram sobre esse exato conjunto de circunstâncias há cerca de uma semana, jogando bem o suficiente para encerrar as coisas mais cedo e criar uma porta para o retorno de Waldron.
Dê flores ao homem, como dizem hoje em dia.
Em vez de usar antolhos “eu” enquanto os destinos da pós-temporada e da divisão se agitavam, o time que se tornou mais próximo do que se pensava ser possível depois de uma temporada atrás escolheu pensamentos “nós”.
“Ele foi muito bom lá por um tempo, cara. Muito bom”, disse Musgrove. “… Amo esse cara.”
Musgrove disse que Waldron estava mais perto de ficar do que imaginava. Quando surgiram dúvidas, ele às vezes tinha dificuldade para ver o que os outros faziam. Quando ele se perguntou se conseguiria fazer isso, ele já havia conseguido.
Os Padres não terminaram onde terminaram – vencendo mais de 90 jogos, sediando uma série de playoffs – sem Waldron.
Musgrove explicou seus pensamentos sobre Waldron no tom de um irmão mais velho carinhoso e protetor. Será que o número 162 é importante com tão pouco em jogo?
“Sinto que o maior defeito dele foi não acreditar o suficiente em si mesmo”, disse Musgrove. “Todos aqui acreditavam mais nele do que ele em si mesmo. … Eu sinto que ele pensou que não era bom o suficiente ou teve que acompanhar caras como (Yu) Darvish e eu. E ele estava fazendo mais do que precisava e mais do que qualquer um esperava que ele fizesse.
“Tentamos enfatizar isso nele. ‘Você pertence aqui, cara.’ Eu sei que ele está apenas a uma mudança de mentalidade de ser um titular realmente consistente.”
Sussurros em torno de Chase Field indicavam que os Padres estavam inclinados a trazer Waldon de volta. Se eles tivessem invertido o campo, invertido a ordem e escolhido Waldron primeiro, as regras do beisebol o teriam tornado inelegível para a próxima rodada.
Trazer Waldron à tona agora criaria o duplo benefício de torná-lo potencialmente disponível à medida que o time avançasse, ao mesmo tempo em que energizaria a sede do clube com um toque de caneta.
Haveria Waldron, consumindo mais entradas enquanto outros aliviavam o acelerador.
“(Waldron e Vasquez são) caras que deram tudo o que tinham, nos deram o seu melhor e foram realmente bons às vezes”, disse Musgrove. “Recompense-os um pouco com mais uma largada e ajude a recuperar os caras.”
O único potencial perdedor na jogada pode ser o time do outro banco.
Imagine ser o Diamondbacks, preparando-se para o anunciado titular Martin Perez enquanto luta pelos últimos suspiros de oxigênio nos playoffs… e pegando o knuckleballer Waldron.
Braves e Mets, também brigando por duas vagas que deixarão um dos times de fora, provavelmente ficariam bem com a ruga tardia.
Waldron registrou mais entradas do que Musgrove e Darvish, que perderam longos trechos devido a lesões e motivos pessoais. Apontar Waldron para o monte seria mais do que uma dica. Seria um abraço de urso emocionante.
“Temos muita sorte de conseguir alinhar as coisas da maneira que queremos com o campo de casa e tudo mais”, disse Cease.
