Faltando menos de uma semana para o fim da temporada regular, o treinador de tênis de Coronado, Dave Willingham, está se apegando a dois sonhos.
Os times masculino e feminino de Willingham têm uma chance nos campeonatos estaduais da Classe 5A. As coisas têm ocorrido, em sua maioria, conforme o planejado, mas o treinador sabe que seus times estão em um dia ruim por verem seus objetivos irem pelo ralo.
“Acho que temos uma chance legítima”, disse Willingham. “Os meninos têm uma chance muito boa. Eles são muito profundos, e a liderança sênior é incrível. O time feminino tem a sorte de ter muitos bons calouros.”
Willingham está cautelosamente otimista, pois sabe que uma lesão pode custar caro. Ele e vários outros treinadores importantes estão avaliando suas posições conforme a pós-temporada se aproxima. O torneio estadual 5A para equipes está programado para começar em 4 de outubro.
Tênis masculino
Coronado assumiu o comando com uma vitória de 12-6 sobre o bicampeão Palo Verde em 28 de agosto. Os Cougars entraram esta semana com 8-0 na liga, mas Faith Lutheran também estava invicto com 6-0. E Bishop Gorman (3-2) e Palo Verde (5-3) não podem ser descartados.
“Esses quatro times vão batalhar”, disse Willingham. “Vai ser apertado.”
A próxima semana apresenta uma agenda bastante sem eventos, com exceção de um confronto Faith Lutheran-Coronado na próxima segunda-feira em Coronado. O vencedor controlará seu destino indo para o jogo estadual.
Centennial (6-0), Doral Academy (6-0) e Durango (4-0) permaneceram invictos rumo à última semana completa da competição 4A Desert da temporada regular.
Doral tem uma grande semana pela frente, já que os Dragons receberão o Centennial na terça-feira e o Durango na quarta-feira. Ambas as partidas serão no Darling Tennis Center.
O Centennial viaja para enfrentar Durango na próxima segunda-feira na última partida da temporada regular.
O Meadows abriu a semana no topo do campo 4A Mountain com 6-0, com Foothill (5-1) e Tech (5-1) na perseguição. Nenhum dos três times deve enfrentar uma ameaça séria esta semana.
No jogo 3A, Pahrump Valley (9-0) e Boulder City (7-0) abriram a semana como os times a serem batidos.
Tênis feminino
Com 8-0, Palo Verde entrou na semana em primeiro lugar sobre o rival Coronado (7-1). Com 6-1, Clark abriu na terceira posição.
Mas os Chargers enfrentam uma semana final brutal que incluirá partidas contra Coronado, Faith Lutheran e Bishop Gorman.
Os atuais campeões estaduais, Panthers, levam vantagem na reta final, já que provavelmente não enfrentarão uma ameaça séria na semana final.
No jogo 4A Desert, Centennial e Doral Academy abriram a semana em 6-0. Os times jogam no Darling Tennis Center hoje, com o vencedor provavelmente ficando com a primeira colocação da pós-temporada.
O Meadows (6-0) começou a semana como o favorito da 4A Mountain, enquanto Foothill (5-1) e Silverado (5-1) lutarão para manter a segunda posição com uma partida na quinta-feira em Foothill.
Boulder City (8-0), Pahrump Valley (8-1) e Cimarron-Memorial (7-1) entraram na semana como os principais concorrentes 3A. Não há confrontos diretos restantes entre esses times.
Golfe para meninas
Faith Lutheran está classificada como número 1 na ação 5A Desert, com o torneio estadual em 9 e 10 de outubro. Coronado, que lutou contra lesões, e Palo Verde estão empatados na posição número 2.
Maddie Perez, da Faith Lutheran, é a golfista mais bem classificada da divisão, com duas partidas de temporada regular para disputar, seguida por Berlin Biddinger, de Coronado, e Macy Garth, da Faith Lutheran.
Bishop Gorman ocupa o primeiro lugar no jogo 5A Desert, seguido por Clark e Arbor View.
Alliah Jordan, de Clark, está em primeiro lugar, faltando duas partidas, enquanto Samantha Harris, de Bishop Gorman, está em segundo e Nya Palmer, de Sierra Vista, em terceiro.
Desert Oasis está no topo da classificação 4A Desert com uma partida de temporada regular restante. O torneio estadual é em 14 e 15 de outubro.
Brittani Stone, da Las Vegas High, está no primeiro lugar, com Lexi Rosenthal, do Desert Oasis, em segundo, e Kali Patterson, do Legacy, em terceiro.
Rancho, Basic e Doral Academy estão lutando pela primeira posição na 4A Mountain, com duas partidas restantes na temporada regular.
Raegan Williams, de Rancho, Kara Tien, de Tech, e Klara Kulova, estão lutando pelo primeiro lugar na divisão.
A Classe 3A contará com um torneio regional nos dias 9 e 10 de outubro. Boulder City e Virgin Valley dividem a primeira posição na reta final.
Com uma partida restante antes da regional, Abigail Llewellyn, de Virgin Valley, lidera o grid, com Ali Zuniga, de Pahrump Valley, na segunda posição, e Iris Sim, de The Meadows, na terceira.
Meninas cross country
Falta um mês para a temporada de cross country começar, e várias equipes estavam ativas no último final de semana.
Shadow Ridge competiu no Woodbridge Cross Country Classic no sábado em Irvine, Califórnia. Mais de 15.000 atletas competiram em 52 corridas, com os Mustangs terminando seu evento universitário em segundo lugar geral. Elynn Okuda cobriu o percurso de 3 milhas em 17:52 para liderar Shadow Ridge, que colocou seis corredores no top 100 de um campo que incluía 211 atletas.
Gabriella Martinez, do Bishop Gorman, venceu o CSN Invitational de 5 quilômetros no Floyd Lamb State Park, no sábado, terminando em 19 minutos e 8 segundos. Palo Verde conquistou a vitória da equipe.
Cross country masculino
Em Irvine, Shadow Ridge terminou em 10º na elite Sweepstakes Race do Woodbridge Cross Country Classic. Correndo contra os melhores corredores do país, Carson Wetzel, do Mustangs, cobriu o percurso de 3 milhas em 14:16 para terminar em 31º.
Emmanuel Salinas, de Rancho, foi o melhor finalizador local no CSN Invitational de sábado. Ele completou o percurso de 5 km em 15:53 para terminar em segundo. Bishop Gorman comandou todos os cinco corredores pontuadores no top 11 para levar a vitória da equipe.
