Quero lembrar aos membros fiéis de A Igreja de Jesus Cristo dos Santos dos Últimos Dias como a igreja respondeu em várias ocasiões às políticas e à retórica de Donald Trump. Por favor, reflitam sobre como as ações de Trump se alinham com os valores da igreja.
Em janeiro de 2017, Trump assinou o que ele chamou de “proibição muçulmana”. A igreja respondeu no dia seguinte, pedindo compaixão e ajuda para aqueles que fugiam da violência, guerra e perseguição.
Após os tumultos de Charlottesville em agosto de 2017, a igreja denunciou a violência e reafirmou a mensagem do presidente Gordon B. Hinckley: “Nenhum homem que faz comentários depreciativos sobre pessoas de outra raça pode se considerar um verdadeiro discípulo de Cristo”. Em contraste, Trump declarou que havia “pessoas muito boas em ambos os lados”, um comentário que defendia os nacionalistas brancos.
Em 2018, a política de separação de famílias de Trump na fronteira EUA-México atraiu outra declaração da igreja, pedindo uma reforma imigratória que priorizasse manter as famílias unidas — valores que a abordagem de Trump contradizia.
Em dezembro de 2020, a igreja parabenizou o presidente Biden por sua vitória. Após a insurreição de 6 de janeiro, a igreja declarou: “Condenamos a violência e o comportamento ilegal… e qualquer sugestão de mais violência.”
Na Conferência Geral de abril de 2021, o Presidente Oaks apelou por discurso pacífico e unidade, destacando a oposição da igreja à retórica divisiva. Ele também disse: “Há muitas questões políticas, e nenhum partido, plataforma ou candidato individual pode satisfazer todas as preferências pessoais.”
Por fim, em uma carta lida no púlpito em junho de 2023, a igreja encorajou os membros a “estudar os candidatos cuidadosamente e votar naqueles com integridade, compaixão e serviço… independentemente do partido. Votar em uma chapa direta ou com base na ‘tradição’ sem estudo cuidadoso… é uma ameaça à democracia e inconsistente com os padrões revelados (ver D&C 98:10).” Por favor, reflita sobre esses exemplos e considere se as ações de Trump se alinham com os valores de integridade, compaixão e serviço da igreja.
