Em resposta ao comentário de Bonner Russell Cohen de 14 de setembro, “O processo de terras públicas de Utah tem implicações importantes para Nevada”: A desinformação do Sr. Cohen e dos legisladores de Utah sobre os fatos do processo de apropriação de terras em Utah representa riscos significativos para os valores e interesses da nação . O esforço de Utah para desfinanciar a conservação e espalhar informações falsas é problemático, e os desafios legais do estado ignoram a maioria das pessoas que apoiam a protecção de terras públicas e a sua manutenção em mãos públicas.
De acordo com a pesquisa State of the Rockies 2024 do Colorado College, os eleitores ocidentais são esmagadoramente a favor de priorizar a conservação em vez da produção de energia em terras públicas. Pela primeira vez, a maioria dos republicanos e independentes apoia a conservação. No geral, 70 por cento dos eleitores preferem proteger as terras públicas, a água potável, a qualidade do ar e os habitats da vida selvagem, enquanto apenas 26 por cento defendem o aumento da produção de energia. É bem sabido que os estados ocidentais não têm os recursos, pessoal ou experiência para gerir terras públicas dentro das suas fronteiras. Milhões de hectares de terras públicas serão vendidos ao melhor licitante para fornecer os recursos financeiros necessários aos estados para gerirem essas terras, ao mesmo tempo que enchem os bolsos de interesses especiais.
Uma decisão a favor do processo de Utah marcaria o fim das terras públicas como as conhecemos, abrindo as comportas a todos os políticos anti-terras públicas no Ocidente para confiscar terras públicas através dos tribunais. Estamos perante o potencial de perda e privatização de 210 milhões de acres actualmente geridos pelo governo federal para benefício e usufruto do povo americano. Vastas extensões de terras públicas actualmente utilizadas para recreação dispersa, tais como a área que rodeia as Montanhas Muddy, seriam vendidas e privatizadas porque os estados não teriam capacidade financeira para gerir estas terras. Que desastre seria para o nosso país e que desastre financeiro seria para os nevadanos.
