Como esperado, a velha magia de Blackmon apareceu na terça-feira à noite no Coors Field, mas as chances dos Rockies de vencer os Cardinals desapareceram com o retorno de quedas no final do jogo.
St. Louis marcou uma corrida no sétimo e mais quatro no oitavo para transformar um jogo acirrado em um placar de 7-3.
O Colorado perdeu quando liderava após seis entradas pela 15ª vez nesta temporada (um recorde de 43-15), a segunda maior derrota desse tipo na Liga Nacional, atrás do Mets (61-16).
Um dia após anunciar sua aposentadoria, o veterano de 14 anos Charlie Blackmon balançou sua varinha mágica e deu aos Rockies uma curta vantagem de 3 a 2 no quinto com uma tripla RBI no espaço entre o centro e a direita.
Blackmon tem 38 anos, mas ainda tem as rodas de um jogador muito mais jovem, e ele queimou o caminho de base em seu caminho para a terceira. A tripla foi a quinta da temporada de Blackmon, líder da equipe, e a 68ª de sua carreira, a maior na história da franquia e a maior entre todos os jogadores ativos da liga principal.
Blackmon também abriu o oitavo com uma dupla, mas os Rockies não conseguiram trazê-lo para casa. O Colorado agora marcou três corridas ou menos 34 vezes em casa, estendendo um recorde da franquia. A antiga marca era de 31 vezes em 2011.
Os Cardinals transformaram quatro rebatidas e uma caminhada em quatro corridas no oitavo contra os destros Angel Chivilli e Jake Bird. As rebatidas decisivas foram simples RBI de Jordan Walker e Victor Scott contra Chivilli e uma dupla de duas corridas de Masyn Winn contra Bird.
“Quando você eleva a bola, você está se colocando em perigo”, disse o gerente do Rockies, Bud Black, referindo-se a Chivilli. “Você olha para as mudanças para Walker e elas foram todas elevadas. Isso deu a eles a corrida da liderança, em 4-3. E então eles conseguiram a bola rasteira de Scott — isso é beisebol.”

O titular do Rockies, Ryan Feltner, trabalhando em um bom jogo, saiu com cãibra no braço de arremesso enquanto enfrentava o rebatedor inicial Lars Nootbar. Feltner disse depois daquele jogo que ele deve ficar bem e espera fazer sua última partida no domingo na final da temporada do Colorado contra o Dodgers em Coors.
O destro Victor Vodnik substituiu Felnter no meio da rebatida e concedeu uma base por bolas a Nootbar antes de eliminar Walker.
Então o rebatedor emergente Matt Carpenter acertou uma dupla para o centro-direito, avançando Nootbar para a terceira base. Winn rebateu uma bola de volta para Vodnik, que pegou Nootbar em um rundown, mas os Rockies estragaram quando falharam em marcar Nootbar e o segunda base Aaron Schunk falhou em cobrir a segunda base. Enquanto Nootbar corria de volta para a terceira base, Scott (correndo como rebatedor emergente para Carpenter) correu de volta da terceira base para a segunda, e Winn terminou na primeira em uma escolha do defensor.

St. Louis atacou primeiro quando eles balançaram Feltner para duas corridas em quatro rebatidas no terceiro. Michael Siani começou com um single e roubou a segunda. Siani valsou para casa no home run de duas corridas de Winn para a esquerda no slider pendurado de Feltner.
O inning poderia ter escapado de Feltner — ele cedeu uma rebatida simples com uma eliminação para Paul Goldschmidt e uma rebatida simples com duas eliminações para Brendan Donovan — mas Feltner eliminou Nolan Arenado e fez Ivan Herrera voar para a direita para anular o rali de St. Louis.
Feltner disse que lida com innings perigosos como esse muito melhor do que antes.
“Essas são situações em que as ofensas podem ficar um pouco mais agressivas, e eu tinha as ferramentas, mas simplesmente não tinha a consistência ou os meios em termos de onde estamos no jogo”, disse Feltner. “Preciso saber que tenho que fazer um arremesso aqui, ou que esse cara será agressivo aqui. Pequenas coisas como essa se somam, então só ter passado por essas experiências me ajudou.”
O Colorado respondeu na parte inferior do terceiro com o home run solo de Schunk contra o destro Michael McGreevy. Foi o segundo home run de Schunk na temporada. Schunk também acertou um single de RBI no campo interno no quinto, estendendo sua sequência de rebatidas para seis jogos. Ele está rebatendo .400 (10 em 25) em seus últimos nove jogos.
Feltner fez outra largada de qualidade, sua terceira consecutiva em setembro. Ele lançou seis innings, permitindo duas corridas em seis rebatidas. Ele caminhou apenas duas. Ele tem uma ERA de 2,22 em setembro e postou uma ERA de 3,21 em 14 largadas desde 26 de junho.
“Tenho tido muita ajuda do (receptor Jacob) Stallings atrás do home plate, me guiando”, ele disse. “Ele está me ajudando a usar minhas coisas da melhor maneira possível. Além disso, estou me sentindo super afiado com todos os meus arremessos e consigo acertá-los ou colocá-los na terra para uma perseguição. Ao longo da temporada, acho que fiquei mais afiado.”

No início final de temporada de Gomber, o canhoto tentará se recuperar de um dos piores começos de sua carreira. Enfrentando o Arizona no Coors Field, ele permitiu seis corridas (cinco merecidas) em apenas duas entradas. Foi o início mais curto de sua temporada. Gomber, parte da troca de 2021 que enviou Nolan Arenado para St. Louis, está 1-1 com uma ERA de 6,55 em cinco jogos da carreira (três partidas) contra os Cardinals. Ele recebeu uma não decisão na derrota do Colorado por 8-5 em St. Louis em 7 de junho, cedendo quatro corridas em seis rebatidas com uma caminhada e quatro strikeouts em cinco entradas.
Fedde fará sua quinta partida na carreira (sexta aparição) contra o Rockies, mas sua primeira como um Cardinal. Suas saídas anteriores foram como um membro do Nationals. Em sua última partida no Coors Field, em 3 de maio de 2022, ele limitou o Colorado a uma corrida em sete entradas na vitória de Washington por 10-2. Ele cedeu seis rebatidas, deu duas walks e eliminou três. Em sua partida na última quinta-feira, Fedde permitiu uma corrida em quatro rebatidas e uma walk, enquanto eliminou três em seis entradas em uma partida sem decisão contra o Pirates. Foi a primeira partida de qualidade do destro desde 25 de agosto e apenas a segunda em seus últimos 10 jogos.
