JACKSONVILLE, Flórida — Deshaun Watson teve um dos piores fins de semana de sua vida quando perdeu seu pai na sexta-feira passada e um de seus melhores amigos no sábado, antes da estreia contra os Cowboys.
Ele se recusou a usar isso como desculpa, mas Watson teve um dos jogos mais terríveis de sua carreira durante a goleada de domingo por 33 a 17, lançando duas interceptações e obtendo uma classificação de 51,1, a segunda mais baixa de sua carreira, sem contar o 0,0 em seu primeiro quarto de jogo contra os Colts no ano passado.
Sofrendo seis sacks e marcando um total de 17 em um colapso ofensivo coletivo, Watson não conseguiu operar o novo esquema de forma eficaz, e os Browns ficaram para trás por 20 a 3 no intervalo, 27 a 3 no terceiro e 33 a 10 no quarto.
Mas o maior golpe de todos veio no dia seguinte, quando uma nova ação civil foi movida contra ele em Houston pelo advogado Tony Buzbee, com a autora acusando-o de agressão sexual durante um encontro em seu apartamento em 10 de outubro de 2020, quando ele jogava pelos Texans, e pedindo US$ 1 milhão em danos.
Buzbee é o advogado que representou 25 massagistas que processaram Watson por má conduta sexual, com 23 deles chegando a um acordo, um desistindo do processo e um pendente. Um 26º processo foi aberto contra ele em outubro de 2022 por um advogado diferente, Anissah Nguyen, depois que ele cumpriu sua suspensão de 11 jogos e pagou seus US$ 5 milhões sob a Política de Conduta Pessoal da NFL, uma punição que foi negociada pela NFL e pela NFL Players Association. Ele também passou por um extenso tratamento obrigatório pelo que a NFL considerou agressão sexual.
Watson negou veementemente as novas alegações, afirmando em sua coletiva de imprensa de quarta-feira que ele descobriu sobre elas na segunda-feira, quando todos os outros descobriram. Seu advogado, Rusty Hardin, divulgou uma declaração dizendo em parte que ele está “confortável que ele finalmente será inocentado”.
A NFL iniciou uma investigação liderada por Lisa Friel, sua Conselheira Especial para Investigações, que também liderou a investigação que resultou na suspensão e multa de Watson. Pelo acordo, quaisquer novos casos decorrentes de supostos incidentes durante esse período que sejam iguais ou substancialmente semelhantes aos outros são cobertos pelas sanções anteriores, mas a NFL determinará se isso está fora desse escopo. Na quinta-feira, Buzbee disse que planeja entrevistar seu cliente com a NFL em duas semanas e que ele tem um vídeo “pertinente” ao caso.
Enquanto isso, os Browns apoiam Watson e planejam se unir a ele para uma vitória no domingo aqui contra os Jaguars, que estão com 0-1.
“É o que sempre fizemos, fechar fileiras e cuidar dos nossos rapazes, não importa quem seja”, disse Myles Garrett, capitão do time, na sexta-feira. “Então, continuaremos a apoiá-lo completamente e ajudá-lo a superar tudo com que ele está lidando. Ele passou por muitas dificuldades pessoais diferentes atualmente, então estaremos lá para ele o máximo que pudermos e seremos aquele ombro para se apoiar e cuidar deles como irmãos no domingo.”
A forte demonstração de apoio começou quando Watson perdeu seu pai, Don Richardson, na sexta-feira, e seu amigo próximo e ex-companheiro de equipe da Clemson, Diondre Overton, no sábado, em um tiroteio fatal. Principalmente afastado de seu pai, Watson ainda foi duramente atingido pela perda. Os Browns deram a ele a opção de ir para casa no último fim de semana, mas ele queria enfrentar os Cowboys.
“Nós conversamos quando nos conhecemos como líderes”, disse Garrett. “Todos nós conversamos e ele realmente se abriu para nós e senti que esse era realmente um momento para nos conectarmos e conhecê-lo e ele nos conhecer, como iríamos reagir a ele como uma família e sentir esse apoio e nos abrir para seu sistema de apoio. Eu sinto que isso realmente o capacita a vir até nós se algo mais acontecer, seja relacionado ao futebol ou não, sabendo que o apoiamos e eu estava disposto a compartilhar algumas das minhas experiências, seja da experiência pessoal familiar ou de jogar o jogo. Houve dificuldades por toda parte e eu queria que ele soubesse que não está passando por isso sozinho e que todos nós lidamos com nossos próprios problemas e continuaremos a apoiá-lo.”
Denzel Ward, outro capitão da equipe, manifestou forte apoio a Watson após as alegações.
“Há muita negatividade e ódio neste mundo e eu acho que você tem que abraçar as pessoas e expressar mais amor e você não sabe o que muitas pessoas passam aqui”, disse Ward. “Todos nós passamos por nossas próprias coisas e coisas assim e coisas acontecem, mas tenho certeza de que eles cuidarão das coisas legalmente e coisas assim, e as pessoas não sabem histórias completas de tudo. Mas não há distrações do nosso lado.”
O recebedor Amari Cooper também prometeu que as alegações não serão uma distração no domingo.
“Quero dizer, na vida, todos nós passamos por coisas como um velho veterano chefe disse no meu ano de novato, não importa o que você esteja passando fora do campo, uma vez que você cruza essas linhas lá fora, você simplesmente deixa em casa, foca no futebol”, ele disse. “Então eu acho que os veteranos deste time fazem um bom trabalho nisso.”
Cooper rejeitou a narrativa generalizada vinda do desastre dos Cowboys de que Watson, que não joga uma temporada completa desde 2020 e está se recuperando de uma cirurgia para reparar seu ombro fraturado e labrum rompido, está quebrado e acabado. O que o deixa confiante de que ele vai se recuperar?
“Porque eu o conheço”, ele disse. “Quando ele chegou aqui, eu realmente não o conhecia, eu só sabia dele. Agora eu o conheço, conheço sua personalidade, conheço seu padrão. Ele é seu maior crítico. Ele é um grande jogador. O jogo vem com altos e baixos. Ele vem com altos e baixos. A semana passada não foi uma boa semana para nenhum de nós e isso é apenas parte do jogo. Como eu mencionei antes, as pessoas tendem a exagerar, a mídia sensacionaliza as coisas, especialmente um quarterback estrela de qualquer time. Então é apenas uma reação exagerada. Mas essa é a melhor coisa sobre este jogo. Você tem mais uma semana para entrar em campo e provar a si mesmo. Então é isso que todos nós estamos ansiosos.”
O segurança Grant Delpit prometeu seu comprometimento inabalável com Watson esta semana.
“Escute, cara, eu sei que ele tem muito o que fazer”, ele disse. “Nós viemos para este prédio, viemos aqui para trabalhar, e viemos aqui para executar o que temos que fazer. Eu o deixei saber, cara, ‘Eu te protejo não importa o que aconteça, cara. E enquanto você jogar por este time e enquanto esses caras — você estiver neste vestiário conosco, e mesmo depois disso eu nunca faria nada para machucá-lo ou mesmo ir contra você.’ Esse é meu quarterback. E eu me imaginaria em uma situação, ninguém sabe o que ele realmente está passando, ninguém sabe os detalhes reais, mas eu protejo meu quarterback.”
O guarda direito Wyatt Teller, que lamentou o fato de que a linha não pôde fazer mais para proteger Watson contra os Cowboys e que todo o time contribuiu para a derrota, está torcendo para que ele volte forte no domingo.
“Esse é meu quarterback”, ele disse. “Quero que ele seja o MVP. Quero que ele seja o melhor que puder ser. Quero que ele tenha sucesso e o encontre, porque isso calaria muitos dos pessimistas também.”
Watson disse na quarta-feira que ouviu do dono do Browns e do GM Andrew Berry que “eles me dizem todo dia que me apoiam, que me apoiam e que querem que eu me concentre em ser o melhor quarterback que eu puder ser. Isso é tudo que posso fazer, apenas falar a minha verdade, contar a verdade a eles.”
Ele disse que não sentiu necessidade de conversar com seus companheiros de equipe após o novo processo civil.
“Não, porque eles conhecem meu caráter”, ele disse. “Eles me veem todo dia. Eles sabem exatamente quem eu sou e eu acho que essa é a diferença. Quando você está perto de mim todo dia, você conhece minha aura, você conhece minha energia, você conhece meu caráter, eu acho que você vai entender quem eu realmente sou.”
Quanto a se recuperar de um dos piores jogos de sua carreira e provar que não está acabado, Watson observou que o novo ataque é um trabalho em andamento. Não ficará mais fácil no domingo contra jogadores como os principais pass-rushers Josh Hines-Allen, Travon Walker e Arik Armstead. Além do mais, ele estará sem o left tackle titular Jed Wills Jr. e provavelmente Jack Conklin novamente também, com James Hudson III provavelmente fazendo sua segunda partida na posição.
“Novas peças, novos caras, primeiro futebol ao vivo juntos”, disse Watson. “Vai levar tempo.
