É chamado de Península de Baltimore — outro nome para 235 acres na Hanover Street, em South Baltimore. Esteja preparado para encontrar um novo pedaço da cidade aqui. Ao longo do caminho, você vivenciará um encontro dramático com o Rio Patapsco e o Porto de Baltimore.
Nos últimos anos, um campus de prédios surgiu ao longo de ruas recém-criadas. Há uma House Street, Tidewater Street, Mission Boulevard, Terrapin Way e Rye Street, junto com a antiga Cromwell. A Performance Street circunda o novo estádio e sede da Under Armour. A Insulator Drive agora é uma comunidade de sobrados.
A arquitetura é retrô — tijolos marrons e cinzas em um estilo industrial que lembra algo que o diretor de arte da Restoration Hardware aprovaria. Há também um plano de paisagismo organizado com poços profundos de árvores cheios do que parecem ser plantas nativas de Maryland. Em contraste com o resto da cidade, esta é uma área planejada livre de granulação urbana.
Os edifícios têm janelas grandes, ideais para apreciar melhor a vista.
As ruas de asfalto são frescas e limpas. Os meios-fios e calçadas quase convidam você a dar uma volta e explorar. O Elijah’s Park, nomeado em homenagem ao deputado federal Elijah Cummings, tem um playground inspirado nos caranguejos de Maryland.
Lembro-me de uma época, décadas atrás, quando tentei encontrar Dickeyville pela primeira vez e acabei em Woodstock. A Península, conhecida por gerações de baltimoreanos como Port Covington, pode ser alcançada pela McComas Street e Hanover Street em Cromwell. Acho que você também pode chegar lá de barco.
Se esta é uma área pouco conhecida, há um bom motivo para isso. Os mais de 200 acres já foram propriedade da antiga Western Maryland Railway, que operava suas instalações portuárias de carvão e grãos aqui. O lugar era um labirinto de trilhos de trem, um elevador de grãos e píeres. Não havia estação de passageiros, e a ferrovia não queria você aqui. Era perigoso, e havia policiais da empresa para mantê-lo fora.
Depois que o antigo Western Maryland foi embora, uma parte do local abrigou as operações do The Baltimore Sun e sua gráfica. Houve até uma época em que um Sam’s Club e um Walmart ocuparam uma parte do terreno. A sede da Under Armour e a Nick’s Fish House também estão lá.
Não fica longe da tradicional Baltimore de Fort Avenue, Riverside Park e Fort McHenry. Mas você nunca confundirá a Península de Baltimore com as pequenas ruas de South Baltimore.
Outra presença industrial foi a fábrica da Locke Insulator. A antiga estrutura de tijolos desapareceu e agora é um enclave residencial.
O Rye Street Tavern agora ostenta um visual de restaurante resort com um bar ao ar livre. Eu poderia me ver passando uma tarde ensolarada de outono, antes que o frio chegasse, em uma das cadeiras estilo pátio ao ar livre no terraço deste restaurante. As vistas são do outro lado do porto em direção a Fairfield.
O interior também fala dos velhos tempos do Porto de Baltimore. Há gravuras da Chesapeake Steamship Line e dos barcos da baía que saíam das ruas Pratt e Light com destino a Norfolk e outros pontos.
Falei com o gerente geral da taverna, Anthony Brawner, que disse que teve alguns dias em que 1.100 clientes visitaram o local. Ele também mencionou que casais que se inscreveram para uma das novas casas geralmente comemoram com uma parada em seu estabelecimento.
A Península pertence a um conjunto de lugares — Inner Harbor, Harbor East, Harbor Point, seções de Canton e todo o Sparrows Point — que já foram movimentadas partes industriais da cidade que surgiram quando as indústrias pesadas evaporaram aqui. A cidade perdeu empregos e população, mas a terra antiga foi colocada em uso.
