FORT COLLINS — Os Rams se seguraram com unhas e dentes em seu jogo decisivo no sábado.
Depois de ser derrotada pelo rival CU na semana passada, e com o calendário ficando mais rígido com o Oregon State e jogos da conferência em outubro, a CSU conseguiu uma vitória mais difícil do que deveria ter sido sobre a UTEP no Canvas Stadium.
Na vitória por 27-17, o jogo de corrida bem lubrificado dos Rams abriu caminho. Avery Morrow liderou com 21 corridas para 156 jardas em meio a um dia de corrida de 224 jardas no geral. Os times especiais também tiveram uma grande jogada para preparar uma pontuação fácil, o que compensou o desempenho dominante da defesa no primeiro tempo, que se tornou um pouco azedo no segundo tempo.
Enquanto o Canvas Stadium voltou à sua forma típica de quase vazio após o público recorde no Rocky Mountain Showdown, os Rams deram uma resposta muito necessária em campo sete dias após a decepção contra os Buffs.
Foi um triunfo feio, mas um triunfo mesmo assim, mesmo que o desempenho irregular não tenha aliviado muitas das preocupações gerais sobre a capacidade dos Rams de voltar a jogar nesta temporada pela primeira vez desde 2017.
A CSU deixou a UTEP sem vitórias ficar por perto durante boa parte do primeiro tempo e depois se recuperar no segundo tempo. Mas atrás de Morrow, Justin Marshall (14 corridas para 43 jardas) e uma linha defensiva que finalmente mostrou sua força — os Rams seguraram os Miners em apenas 48 jardas corridas e tiveram três sacks, mais do que seus três primeiros jogos combinados — a CSU mudou para 2-2 entrando em sua semana de folga.
Os Rams assumiram o controle rapidamente na posse de bola inicial com um avanço de 12 jogadas e 75 jardas finalizado por um touchdown de 2 jardas de Morrow, colocando o time da casa na frente por 7 a 0 no meio do primeiro quarto.
Mas enquanto a defesa do CSU forçou punts nas três primeiras investidas da UTEP, o ataque dos Rams também perdeu seu ímpeto.
Eles foram parados na quarta descida duas vezes, receberam um punt e, então, no meio do segundo quarto, Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi deu aos Miners sua primeira reviravolta significativa no jogo. Enquanto corriam, o QB do segundo ano do redshirt lançou uma interceptação imprudente para o cornerback da UTEP, AJ Odums.
Isso colocou os Miners na linha de 27 jardas do CSU e levou a um field goal de 45 jardas para reduzir o placar para 7 a 3 faltando 6:12 para o fim do primeiro tempo.
Mas a CSU teve uma resposta rápida, pois menos de um minuto depois, Murrow passou por um buraco largo o suficiente para passar um caminhão e saiu ileso para um touchdown de 73 jardas.
No segundo tempo, a CSU continuou a adicionar. Depois de bloquear a UTEP para começar o terceiro quarto, Dane Olson bloqueou o punt dos Miners, que os Rams recuperaram na linha de sete jardas dos visitantes. Três jogadas depois, a CSU converteu aquele destaque dos times especiais no passe de TD de 5 jardas de Fowler-Nicolosi para Armani Winfield para ir à frente por 21-3.
O field goal de 37 jardas de Jordan Noyes no próximo ataque dos Rams elevou o placar para 24 a 3, uma vantagem de três touchdowns que pareceu colocar o jogo fora de alcance do instável ataque dos Miners.
Mas a UTEP finalmente encontrou a end zone na posse seguinte, quando os Miners fizeram uma marcha de sete jogadas e 75 jardas, coroada pelo passe para touchdown de 28 jardas de Cade McConnell para Kenny Odom. Isso cortou o placar para 24-10 com 4:33 restantes no terceiro. A substituição de McConnell, que assumiu o lugar de Skyler Locklear no intervalo, deu um novo impulso aos Miners.
Então, na primeira jogada do quarto período, depois que os Rams perderam o safety sênior Jack Howell por lesão no início do drive, McConnell acertou Odom para outro TD. Este veio em um passe de tela que foi para 55 jardas, fazendo 24-17 e silenciando a multidão do Canvas.
A UTEP teve a chance de empatar o jogo na posse de bola seguinte, mas seu ataque parou nas descidas no meio do campo, e a CSU retomou o controle.
Na marca de dois minutos, Fowler-Nicolosi lançou um pick-six em uma tela de bolha inclinada, mas os Rams evitaram o desastre, já que o placar foi anulado por uma chamada de impedimento dos Miners. Esse foi o mais próximo que a UTEP chegaria de uma improvável reviravolta, já que duas jogadas depois, Noyes acertou um field goal de 39 jardas para dar aos Rams uma vantagem de dois pontos com 1:32 restantes.
