Perder em casa nunca é uma boa sensação.
No ano passado, o número 2, Cathedral Catholic, perdeu para o Helix por dois touchdowns no estádio dos Dons, na Del Mar Heights Road.
Quase 12 meses depois, o Cathedral tinha planos diferentes para uma vitória em casa por 28 a 0 na sexta-feira à noite.
“Nossa defesa jogou ridiculamente excelente”, disse o técnico do Dons, Sean Doyle, após o jogo. “Eles jogam muito duro e estão começando a acreditar uns nos outros em todos os aspectos. Eles estão fazendo seu trabalho muito bem e nossa frente defensiva é tremenda. Temos seis caras lá que podem jogar e pressionar o quarterback.”
O veterano Luke Westfall fez o único sack do time no segundo set defensivo, enquanto o cornerback júnior Aidan Smith-McGlynn interceptou um passe no primeiro ataque do Helix no segundo tempo.
Os Dons abriram uma vantagem de 7 a 0 no primeiro quarto, quando o quarterback Brady Palmer encontrou o colega Hunter Harrington para um touchdown de 67 jardas.
No segundo tempo, Palmer encontrou Harrington mais duas vezes na end zone.
Após uma penalidade de Helix que colocou os Dons na red zone, Palmer encontrou Harrington para um touchdown de 14 jardas, deixando o placar em 14 a 0.
Seis minutos depois, os dois se conectaram novamente. Dessa vez, foi um passe para touchdown de 12 jardas que fez 21-0.
“Eu e Brady temos trabalhado duro desde que ele pisou em campo para nós”, disse Harrington. “Estamos trabalhando duro nos treinos, trabalhando em nossas rotas, trabalhando para permanecermos nítidos.
“Hoje à noite, tudo valeu a pena.”
Palmer completou 12 de 24 passes para 166 jardas e três touchdowns. Ele também carregou a bola quatro vezes para 62 jardas.
Harrington pegou cinco passes para 115 jardas e três touchdowns.
Doyle disse que a conexão entre Palmer e Harrington começou muito antes da Semana 1.
“É 7 contra 7 no verão”, disse Doyle. “Tivemos alguns jogos deles juntos para acertar o tempo, a crença e tudo mais. Então, está começando a acontecer como pensávamos que aconteceria.”
A Cathedral selou o jogo faltando quatro minutos, quando o veterano Jake Funderburg marcou um touchdown de 64 jardas.
Funderburg teve 12 corridas para 151 jardas e um touchdown. Jonathan Solomon acrescentou sete corridas para 34 jardas como fullback.
“Jake Funderberg, Jonathan Solomon, eles correm com a bola forte, o que fez (Helix) condensar, e eles colocaram todo mundo na caixa”, disse Doyle. “Isso colocou Hunter e nossos outros recebedores em uma situação de um contra um na maior parte do tempo.”
Helix foi liderado pelo running back veterano Isaiah Jackson, que teve 21 corridas para 86 jardas. O wide receiver do segundo ano Braylen Ross liderou o caminho com quatro recepções para 40 jardas.
Ambas as equipes estão ociosas na próxima semana. Em 4 de outubro, o Helix recebe o Huntington Beach Edison enquanto o Cathedral abre o jogo da Western League contra o rival St. Augustine no Mesa College.
