Funk progressivo e vocais jazzísticos encherão o Phoebus Jazz Festival neste fim de semana.
O festival reunirá alguns dos músicos mais talentosos de Hampton Roads com shows de artistas de jazz aclamados nacionalmente, como The Headhunters.
O festival começa na sexta-feira e dura até domingo no The American Theatre em Hampton. O fundador do festival, Jae Sinnett, disse que seu objetivo é trazer algo novo para a área.
“Agora, temos festivais de jazz, no nome, por exemplo. Mas há muito R&B e smooth jazz nesses festivais. Mas quando falamos de um festival de jazz de verdade, estamos carentes nessa área”, disse ele. “Meu conceito principal era trazer um festival de jazz de verdade para a área.”
Sua maior esperança é que o Phoebus Jazz Festival possa se transformar em um Hampton Roads Jazz Festival maior.
Sinnett é um baterista, compositor e líder de banda que produziu 19 álbuns. Ele também é um apresentador de rádio de longa data em Norfolk na WHRV-FM, 89.5, com os programas “Sinnett in Session” e “The R&B Chronicles”.
Ele organizou a edição inaugural do festival em 2019, mas a pandemia interrompeu seu ritmo até agora. O evento começará com apresentações de músicos locais, incluindo Liz Brydge, de Virginia Beach.
“Estilo original e único, grande alcance, ótimo timbre, todas essas coisas que você gostaria de ouvir em um cantor”, disse Sinnett sobre Brydge.
O saxofonista de Hampton, Steve Wilson, também tocará na sexta-feira com o grupo de Sinnett, o Zero to 60 Quartet de Jae Sinnett, e a Symphonicity Jazz Orchestra e o Duane Smith Quartet. Sinnett disse que Smith, também de Hampton, é conhecido por misturar “funk moderno-progressivo” com “jazz direto”.
“Duane é um visionário”, disse ele.
O Latin Jazz Conspiracy com Steve Anderson se apresenta no sábado, seguido pelo mundialmente renomado Headhunters, que foi formado por Herbie Hancock em 1973, mas agora se apresenta solo. Tierney Sutton, Tamir Hendleman e Justin Kauflin subirão ao palco no domingo.
