Tempestades históricas causadas pelo furacão Helene inundaram comunidades em toda a Costa do Golfo do estado – e mais de 2,5 milhões de pessoas em toda a Flórida perderam energia – quando a enorme tempestade de categoria 4 atingiu a costa pouco depois das 23h de quinta-feira em Dekle Beach, na região de Big Bend do estado, disse o governador. Ron DeSantis disse sexta-feira de manhã.
“Vimos tempestades em muitas partes da costa oeste da Flórida que excederam o que vimos no furacão Idalia, que seguiu um caminho semelhante, foi semelhante em força, talvez um pouco mais fraco”, disse DeSantis durante a coletiva de imprensa matinal em Tallahassee. , referindo-se à tempestade de agosto de 2023 que atingiu a mesma região. “Foi realmente uma tempestade histórica em diferentes partes do estado.”
Duas mortes foram atribuídas a Helene, incluindo uma fatalidade em Panhandle, na Flórida, depois que uma árvore caiu sobre uma casa em Panhandle. A outra pessoa morreu quando uma placa caiu em seu carro na Interstate 4, em Tampa.
“Rezo para que seja isso”, disse DeSantis.
Ele acrescentou que centenas de equipes de emergência continuam hoje conduzindo operações de busca e resgate em todo o estado, especialmente nas áreas mais atingidas nos condados de Columbia, Taylor e Hamilton.
Com ventos sustentados de 225 km/h e correndo a 37 km/h, Helene correu vários quilômetros a leste na noite de quinta-feira a partir de sua trajetória original prevista antes de atingir uma área menos populosa da Flórida, disse DeSantis. Não conseguiu atingir Tallahassee, a capital do estado com mais de 200 mil residentes. A área menos povoada de Big Bend é conhecida por suas vilas de pescadores e aluguéis por temporada.
Jared Perdue, secretário do Departamento de Transportes da Flórida, pediu aos motoristas que evitem dirigir em estradas ainda inundadas.
“Em toda a costa ainda temos muitas estradas submersas”, disse ele. “É perigoso.”
Os inspetores estaduais continuarão hoje examinando a existência de danos nas grandes pontes sobre a Baía de Tampa, que foram fechadas na quinta-feira, quando Helene se movia para o norte, no Golfo do México, disse Perdue. As pontes – incluindo a Ponte Howard Frankland e a Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway – serão abertas “no devido tempo”, disse ele.
DeSantis notou a amplitude de Helene, que gerou ventos fortes cobrindo quase toda a península da Flórida. Ele observou como até mesmo a costa sudeste da Flórida – a quase 300 milhas de distância – viu tempestades significativas.
Mas foi a Costa do Golfo da Flórida que sofreu o impacto. Em Cedar Key, em Steinhatchee, foi relatada uma tempestade de até 3,6 metros. Um vídeo mostrou a enchente derrubando casas de suas fundações e deixando-as flutuando.
Na Flórida Central, mais de 38.000 clientes perderam energia durante quinta-feira. Rajadas de vento de até 67 mph foram relatadas no Aeroporto Internacional de Orlando e 63 mph no Aeroporto Executivo de Orlando durante a noite.
