Os habitantes de Utah não devem permitir que o diálogo cada vez mais hostil da política nacional envenene a sua atitude histórica de acolher os imigrantes no nosso estado.
Utah foi fundado por refugiados religiosos e políticos. A sua fé predominante acolhe pessoas de todas as raças e nações. Embora o Utah seja esmagadoramente republicano, nos últimos anos os nossos líderes eleitos opuseram-se à crescente hostilidade do partido nacional em relação à imigração.
Mas este ano grande parte da campanha nacional do Partido Republicano baseia-se num ódio aberto e injustificado contra pessoas de outras nações, chegando ao ponto de acusar conscientemente os migrantes legais de estarem aqui ilegalmente e de espalhar histórias falsas sobre cidades americanas perdidas para animais de estimação. comendo e portando metralhadoras estrangeiros.
Espalhar mentiras sobre qualquer grupo de seres humanos não ajuda a resolver os nossos problemas. Apenas aumenta a hostilidade, fomenta sentimentos ruins e violência, divide comunidades e destrói a confiança.
Muito disso está repercutindo na política de Utah.
O governador Spencer Cox, como o governador Gary Herbert antes dele, personificou a atitude acolhedora de Utah, com Cox chegando ao ponto de apelar ao governo federal paralisado para permitir que Utah patrocinasse imigrantes legais para aumentar nossa sobrecarregada reserva de mão de obra.
Mas este ano, com a xenofobia MAGA dominando a política republicana, Cox infelizmente mudou para o campo de construção do muro do Partido Republicano, enviando até um destacamento de soldados da Guarda Nacional de Utah para mostrar a bandeira na fronteira entre o Texas e o México.
Vimos como o veneno da política nacional se infiltrou recentemente em Utah, quando um membro do Legislativo postou um vídeo de uma prática muçulmana local nas redes sociais e reclamou que nunca tinha visto tal coisa, “na pequena cidade de Taylorsville”. Utah.” O deputado estadual Trevor Lee acrescentou mais tarde: “Nem uma única bandeira americana à vista”.
Cidade pequena? Taylorsville é uma cidade de 60.000 habitantes, parte de uma metrópole de Salt Lake City com mais de 1 milhão de habitantes. Bandeiras americanas? A celebração, um desfile anual em homenagem ao neto do profeta Maomé, acontece em todo o mundo e não tem nada a ver com os EUA ou qualquer outra nação.
A resposta online foi um choque de islamofobia de um lado e críticas daqueles que pensavam que a postagem original de Lee era um ataque aos muçulmanos. Mesmo que não tenha sido assim que Lee quis dizer, a explosão nas redes sociais foi apenas mais um exemplo de como os nossos líderes políticos são capazes de acrescentar mais calor, mas não luz, ao assunto.
O desejo nacional republicano de continuar a atacar a controvérsia, em vez de trabalhar para a resolver, bloqueou a melhor oportunidade para um compromisso no Congresso que tivemos nos últimos 30 anos. O Congresso estava pronto para aprovar, e o presidente Joe Biden, para assinar, um projeto de lei de segurança nas fronteiras. Mas isso explodiu quando Donald Trump apelou aos republicanos no Congresso para o bloquearem, em vez de dar aos democratas um sucesso para concorrer.
A América tem um problema com demasiados migrantes que atravessam ilegalmente as nossas fronteiras. Coloca pressão social e financeira nas zonas fronteiriças e noutros locais onde se reúnem aqueles que procuram uma vida melhor.
Mas a nossa economia também depende do trabalho, da energia e do espírito empreendedor dos recém-chegados – legais ou não. Sempre aconteceu. Sempre será.
Uma pesquisa publicada pelo Conselho Americano de Imigração mostra que os quase 300.000 residentes estrangeiros de Utah pagaram US$ 2,5 bilhões em impostos federais, estaduais e locais em 2022 e tinham US$ 8,3 bilhões em poder de compra. Eles abrem empresas e empregam trabalhadores a taxas mais elevadas do que os americanos nativos e colhem a mão-de-obra ociosa em sectores da economia, desde a construção, aos cuidados de saúde e à hotelaria.
O argumento de que aqueles que estão aqui ilegalmente – as estimativas giram em torno de 90 mil a 100 mil em Utah – não pagam impostos é falso.
Mesmo que não estejam registrados como deveriam, eles têm impostos retidos de seus salários, pagam impostos sobre a propriedade como proprietários ou por meio de seus proprietários e, como todos nós, não podem evitar o pagamento de impostos sobre vendas toda vez que eles compre alguma coisa. Em 2022, as estimativas colocam essas receitas fiscais em algo ao norte de US$ 309 milhões em Utah.
Apesar de tudo, os trabalhadores indocumentados vivem e pagam impostos num país onde não são elegíveis para pagamentos da Segurança Social, Medicaid ou Medicare ou outros programas sociais e de apoio. Na verdade, o dinheiro que os trabalhadores indocumentados pagam ao Fundo Fiduciário da Segurança Social ajuda a mantê-lo solvente.
A resolução do problema da migração ilegal exige a limpeza do nosso sistema de imigração legal. Precisamos dos trabalhadores. Também precisamos fazer cumprir nossas leis. Criar e gerir um sistema que atraia e monitorize o fluxo de imigrantes através de canais legais é fundamental para reduzir o fluxo de migração ilegal e a pressão que este exerce sobre as nossas comunidades.
Nada disso acontecerá numa atmosfera política de falsidade e hostilidade.
Utah tem sido uma luz brilhante de esperança para a nossa nação resolver este problema de forma razoável e humana. Poderia ser novamente, se os nossos líderes estivessem à altura da nossa história.
