Enquanto Kristine Keck se estabelece como treinadora de vôlei do primeiro ano de South Carroll, ela sabe, por treinar a maioria das meninas no JV anos atrás, que há muito talento dentro do programa. Agora, ela tem o prazer de liberar esse talento enquanto os Cavaliers se preparam para que cada time pague seu melhor jogo em uma tentativa de derrotar os atuais co-campeões do condado.
A noite de segunda-feira contra o Manchester Valley não foi exceção, mas como tem sido o caso em todas as partidas desta temporada, os Cavaliers prevaleceram. Segurando um time chato dos Mavericks, Elaina Murphy e suas companheiras de equipe responderam a cada corrida, varrendo a partida por 25-21, 25-17, 25-20.
“Sabíamos que seria um desafio”, disse Keck, “mas fizemos exatamente o que tínhamos em nosso plano de jogo e jogamos muito bem”.
O plano de jogo era simples: usar todas as armas ofensivas e usá-las efetivamente. A melhor arma de Keck, Murphy, fez um pouco de tudo para os Cavaliers. O primeiro set foi todo sobre seu saque, que foi poderoso e preciso — e basicamente irretornável — enquanto ela surpreendeu os Mavericks com seis aces consecutivos.
“Eu fui para a última fila depois de não ter ido tão bem na frente, então eu sabia que tinha que compensar isso com meus serviços e conseguir alguns pontos dessa forma”, ela disse. “Eles são um time bom e atlético, então colocar pressão neles com meu serviço é o contra-ataque perfeito.”
Apesar de as Mavericks estarem em desvantagem, elas nunca desistiram, já que Emily Troy trouxe alguns saques poderosos. Troy também foi para a linha de frente e deu alguns golpes poderosos combinados com um tempo de reação rápido, enquanto liderava as Mavericks para uma distância de ataque depois de estarem perdendo muito no primeiro e no segundo sets, levando Keck a pedir um tempo e refocar seu time.
“Essas meninas são jogadoras muito boas e experientes”, disse Keck. “Elas são muito boas em reiniciar. Elas só precisam respirar fundo e estão prontas para ir.”
Depois de momentos para se reagrupar, os Cavaliers entraram em ação e rapidamente exibiram as armas das quais Keck se gaba. Quando não era Murphy, eram Pia White e Kaelyn Bowyer se destacando, e a dupla Addison Bartolain e Jenna Todd se mantendo firme no meio.
“Tínhamos muita confiança em nosso jogo e muita comunicação”, disse Murphy. “Isso nos permitiu ver os pontos fortes do outro time e capitalizá-los.”
Enquanto Murphy acertava aces consecutivos para acabar com os Mavericks no segundo set, o set final foi mais do mesmo. Taylor Berger e Leah Miller entraram na festa, somando-se ao esforço total da equipe enquanto os Cavaliers conquistavam a varredura.
Com mais uma vitória, Keck se maravilhou após a partida não apenas com o quão boa sua equipe é, mas também com o progresso que eles fizeram e continuarão a fazer à medida que uma fase importante da temporada se aproxima.
“Estou observando-os amadurecerem não apenas como jogadores, mas também como pessoas”, disse Keck. “É muito emocionante assistir.”
