Elaine DePrince, mãe da aclamada bailarina Michaela DePrince, morreu um dia depois de sua renomada filha, sem saber de sua morte.
Ela tinha 77 anos.
Mãe de 12 filhos, muitos deles adotados, Elaine DePrince foi uma das primeiras defensoras da garantia da segurança dos hemocomponentes para hemofílicos depois que três filhos adotivos, todos afetados pelo distúrbio hemorrágico, morreram de AIDS contraída por meio do fator de coagulação contaminado pelo HIV.
Ela morreu em 11 de setembro “durante um procedimento de rotina em preparação para uma cirurgia”, disse a porta-voz da família Jess Volinski em uma publicação nas redes sociais no sábado. Ela não sabia que a filha Michaela havia morrido no dia anterior, aos 29 anos.
“Michaela morreu antes de Elaine, e Elaine não sabia da morte de Michaela na época do procedimento. Por mais inacreditável que pareça, as duas mortes não tiveram nenhuma relação”, escreveu Volinski. “A única maneira de dar sentido ao absurdo é que Elaine, que já havia perdido três filhos muitos anos atrás, foi poupada pela graça de Deus da dor de vivenciar a perda de um quarto filho.”
A causa da morte de Michaela DePrince, que nasceu em Serra Leoa, na África Ocidental, em meio à guerra civil do país, que a deixou órfã aos 4 anos de idade, não foi divulgada. Adotada por Elaine DePrince depois de mais de um ano em um orfanato, Michaela seguiu seu caminho, primeiro como a integrante mais jovem do Dance Theater of Harlem, aos 18 anos, e depois como solista principal do Boston Ballet.
Elaine DePrince morreu “depois de muitos anos lutando contra uma doença hereditária e insuficiência cardíaca”, escreveu sua família, acrescentando que ela deixa seus filhos Mia, Beelee, Jaye, Mariel, Amie e seus dois filhos, Erik e Adam. “A família agradece a vocês pela privacidade enquanto eles navegam neste momento tão difícil.”
