Aqueles que querem vencer a correria do Dia da Eleição, 5 de novembro, podem votar antecipadamente até 2 de novembro no cartório geral local. Centenas de pessoas foram vistas esperando na fila em Virginia Beach, e algumas ficaram na fila por cerca de uma hora em Chesapeake, de acordo com postagens nas redes sociais.
O cartório de registro de Norfolk não conseguiu fornecer um número exato de quantas pessoas votaram antecipadamente, mas disse que foram mais de 500.
O clima estava relativamente ameno e parcialmente ensolarado após alguns dias chuvosos para aqueles que tiveram que esperar do lado de fora.
Embora a participação na votação antecipada tenha aumentado significativamente em 2020 por causa da pandemia da COVID-19, especialistas políticos dizem que ela veio para ficar devido ao aumento da popularidade em todo o país desde então. O ex-governador Douglas Wilder, que dirige a L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs na Virginia Commonwealth University, disse que, em alguns casos, a votação antecipada pode ser uma ferramenta para os candidatos durante a campanha, pois a participação pode ajudá-los a avaliar os interesses dos eleitores e se suas mensagens estão repercutindo.
Benjamin Melusky, professor de ciência política na Old Dominion University, disse que as tendências sugerem que a votação antecipada, ou “votação de conveniência”, agora está sendo promovida por ambos os partidos, embora os republicanos tenham demorado mais para adotar a tendência.
Melusky disse que estudos também sugerem que eleitores gostam de oportunidades de votação antecipada, já que podem votar em seu próprio tempo e aprender mais sobre os candidatos. No entanto, pesquisas também sugerem que o entusiasmo geral pode levar os eleitores a votarem antecipadamente, e os eleitores que são mais fortes em suas crenças particulares ou candidato preferido são mais propensos a tirar vantagem da votação antecipada.
“Tenha um plano de votação”, disse Melusky. “Se você quiser votar cedo, faça isso agora. Se você for fazer isso no dia da eleição, saiba onde fica sua seção eleitoral. Certifique-se de ter identificação com você.”
