Emily Maitlis diz que o Duque de York “perdeu o respeito da nação” após sua infame entrevista no Newsnight com ele, mas alertou que as vítimas de Jeffrey Epstein não tiveram o caso encerrado.
“Acho que há negócios inacabados”, disse o jornalista à BBC News. “Não é um final bonito e arrumado.”
A entrevista de 2019, amplamente visto como um “acidente de carro”viu o príncipe Andrew falar abertamente com Maitlis sobre sua amizade com o criminoso sexual condenado Epstein.
Agora é tema de um novo drama em três partes, A Very Royal Scandal, estrelado por Ruth Wilson como Maitlis e Michael Sheen como Andrew.
A entrevista à BBC causou um grande dano à reputação de Andrew e é vista por muitos como uma grande contribuição para sua queda.
Dias depois dissoo duque anunciou que estava se afastando dos deveres reais, dizendo que o escândalo Epstein havia se tornado uma “grande perturbação” para a Família Real.
Maitlis estava falando comigo ao lado de Wilson no Ham Yard Hotel, no centro de Londres, não muito longe de onde o Newsnight é produzido na Broadcasting House da corporação.
Sua entrevista, que virou manchete no mundo todo, foi ao ar em uma edição especial do programa no sábado à noite em 2019.
O evento viu o príncipe Andrew discutir suas ligações com Epstein e Ghislaine Maxwell, a socialite que agora cumpre pena de prisão por ajudar Epstein a abusar de meninas.
Andrew usou a entrevista para negar enfaticamente ter feito sexo com Virginia Giuffre, que tinha então 17 anos, dizendo que estava no Pizza Express em Woking no dia em que o encontro deveria ter ocorrido.
O duque posteriormente pagou um acordo financeiro à Sra. Giuffre, encerrando formalmente um processo civil movido contra ele nos EUA.
O acordo extrajudicial não aceitou nenhuma responsabilidade e o príncipe Andrew sempre rejeitou veementemente as alegações de irregularidades.
Na segunda-feira, foi relatado que o duque terá que pagar suas próprias despesas se ele quiser ficar na mansão Royal Lodge em Windsor.
Ao refletir sobre o impacto da entrevista, Maitlis disse que, de certa forma, “tudo mudou”.
“O príncipe Andrew perdeu seus deveres reais, perdeu a capacidade de usar uniforme, perdeu o respeito da nação e, creio eu, ficou muito mais difícil para ele permanecer na Família Real”, disse ela.
“E por outro lado, não sabemos se as vítimas de Epstein ganharam algo com isso. Não sabemos se suas vidas mudaram materialmente”, ela acrescentou.
“Não houve julgamento. Houve um acordo… mas não tivemos aquela sensação de encerramento ali”, ela disse.
Ela disse que às vezes se perguntava se era “algo mais do que um momento”.
“Como jornalista, você consegue fazer algo mais do que apenas fazer perguntas e depois ver o que muda como resultado?”, ela perguntou.
Ela disse que é por isso que o terceiro episódio da nova série – que foca nas consequências – é tão importante.
“É sobre acerto de contas. É sobre consequências. Mas não é um final legal e limpo com um vilão cômico ou um tipo de herói aventureiro. Não termina bem.”
Maitlis também revelou que um mês após sua entrevista em novembro de 2019, ela foi “puxada de lado” por alguém próximo ao Rei Charles, que na época era o Príncipe de Gales.
Ela disse que a pessoa simplesmente disse: “Sua Alteza Real não ficou descontente com a entrevista”.
A BBC News não conseguiu verificar esses comentários. Mas Maitlis diz que passou anos “tentando decifrar” o que as palavras significavam.
Ela especulou que isso poderia significar que Charles não a “culpou” pela entrevista. “Você não vai para a Torre”, ela disse.
“Ou pode ter significado que, de alguma forma, não foi prejudicial para uma reconexão entre a Família Real e o público britânico.”
Maitlis disse que quando você olha para a forma da monarquia desde então, ela está “mais enxuta”.
“Lembro-me do discurso da Rainha naquele Natal: no piano, havia apenas algumas fotografias, e a sensação era de que havia ocorrido uma mudança”, disse ela.
“E então eu meio que penso naquelas palavras que ouvi em dezembro de 2019 e me pergunto se aquele foi o começo da reinicialização.”
Na série, Wilson usava uma peruca e lentes de contato marrons para se parecer com Maitlis.
A atriz disse que foi “absolutamente maravilhoso” interpretar Maitlis, acrescentando: “Eu pude ser loira, e loiras se divertem mais. Eu adorei.”
Ela recrutou um treinador de voz e também um treinador de movimento, e estudou Maitlis “intensamente” – inclusive no local de trabalho – para tentar entrar no personagem.
“Eu adorei me envolver e ver os bastidores de como esse mundo funciona. Foi isso que me atraiu para o projeto em primeiro lugar”, ela disse.
Maitlis, por sua vez, disse que Wilson conseguiu capturar sua “impaciência”, incluindo a maneira como ela come sanduíches com pressa.
“E ela colocou uma espécie de comédia no movimento que eu tinha”, ela disse.
“Eu não reconheceria isso, mas de repente vi através de Ruth e pensei que era verdade. Estou sempre derrubando coisas. Estou sempre derrubando coisas. Sempre enchi demais uma bolsa.
“Há uma certa quantidade de caos, eu acho, na minha vida fora das telas que Ruth tinha acabado de assistir e injetado perfeitamente sem nunca ter que dizer. E então, foi notável, na verdade.”
A série da Amazon Prime chega poucos meses depois de uma dramatização rival da entrevista do Newsnight de 2019, Scoop, foi lançado na Netflix.
Essa versão estrelou Rufus Sewell como Príncipe Andrew, Gillian Anderson como Emily Maitlis e Billie Piper como a produtora Sam McAlister.
Mas enquanto Scoop se concentrou no papel desempenhado por McAlister na obtenção da entrevista, A Very Royal Scandal é centrado no papel de Maitlis no processo.
Maitlis, que é produtora executiva da nova série, é diplomática quando questionada sobre a versão de McAlister, insistindo que “elas são feras muito diferentes”.
Mas ela disse que havia elementos em Scoop que ela não reconhecia, incluindo cenas que mostravam ela e seu whippet cinza Moody no escritório.
“Sinto muito por desapontá-la”, ela disse. “No meu mundo perfeito, obviamente, cachorros estariam em todo lugar, mas Moody nunca esteve no estúdio do Newsnight.”
Mas até a versão de Maitlis tomou liberdades criativas.
Ela destacou uma cena em que seu marido na tela é ouvido roncando enquanto ela digita furiosamente em seu telefone ao lado dele.
“Devo dizer que não havia ronco no meu casamento ou, você sabe, no quarto”, ela observa.

O que levanta a questão: precisamos de uma dramatização, ou até mesmo duas, se você puder assistir ao filme real?
“A entrevista durou uma hora, um momento, um dia, um ano”, disse Maitlis.
“E [the drama] é na verdade um acúmulo de consequências, resultados e consequências que só agora estamos conseguindo entender.
“Agora, ainda acho que a história em si não está realmente terminada, mas isso é o mais perto que você chegará de entender, eu acho, o começo dela e o que ela fez com todos nós.”
A Very Royal Scandal será lançado no Prime Video em 19 de setembro.
