As escolas do condado de Baltimore poderiam rezonear o limite entre as escolas primárias Hillcrest e Westchester em Catonsville.
Cinco casas na seção sem saída da Beaumont Avenue são zoneadas para Hillcrest, mas cercadas pela zona de Westchester. No final do último ano letivo, cinco alunos moravam na área impactada.
Na quarta-feira à noite, em uma reunião do comitê de limites na Escola Elementar de Westchester, o distrito recomendou o rezoneamento das cinco casas para Westchester.
“Atualmente, o que temos é um ônibus escolar vindo para pegar alunos dentro de um limite que frequenta uma escola diferente”, disse Kenny West, gerente do departamento de transporte do distrito, na reunião. “Então, embora o objetivo aqui seja também alinhar a vizinhança, isso criará algumas eficiências de transporte ao não ter ônibus de escolas diferentes se sobrepondo.”
O novo limite não afetaria nenhuma escola de ensino fundamental ou médio e entraria em vigor no ano letivo de 2025-26.
De acordo com dados do distrito, Hillcrest tem capacidade para 708 alunos, Westchester tem capacidade para 689 alunos e ambas as escolas tiveram uma matrícula em torno de 660 no outono passado. Até 2033, o distrito projeta que Hillcrest estará acima da capacidade em cerca de 45 alunos, enquanto Westchester está projetada para estar com 99% da capacidade.
O comitê de estudo de limites inclui dois representantes de professores e funcionários, dois pais de cada escola e o presidente do conselho consultivo educacional da área. Ambos os diretores também estão no comitê, mas não podem votar no limite final.
“As principais considerações são o uso eficiente da capacidade nas escolas afetadas e a manutenção ou aumento da diversidade entre as escolas para refletir a diversidade da região e do sistema escolar”, disse Mike Gotfredson, especialista no escritório de planejamento estratégico do distrito. “Essas são as duas principais coisas que observamos sempre que fazemos uma mudança de limite.”
Uma sessão de informação pública está marcada para 16 de outubro no refeitório de Westchester das 19h às 20h. O comitê de limites se reunirá novamente em 13 de novembro das 18h às 20h, também em Westchester. O comitê fará uma recomendação ao Conselho de Educação em 25 de março. O conselho votará em 6 de maio.
