O Departamento de Transporte da cidade em breve pavimentará mais estradas com asfalto reciclado.
Metade do asfalto misturado pelas equipes de pavimentação do DOT será feito de estradas antigas recuperadas, anunciou o departamento na quarta-feira.
“Expandir o uso de material rodoviário reciclado em nossa produção de asfalto não só cortará custos, como também cortará emissões”, disse o Comissário de Transporte Ydanis Rodriguez em uma declaração. “É uma vitória para nós, uma vitória para os nova-iorquinos e uma vitória para o planeta.”
Antes de uma estrada ser repavimentada, equipes de trabalho quebram e removem o asfalto velho. Os pedaços da estrada velha são então transportados para uma das duas usinas de asfalto da cidade, onde são quebrados e misturados com asfalto fresco.
O asfalto do departamento já é 40% reciclado, disse um porta-voz do DOT ao Daily News. Mudar para uma mistura meio reciclada poderia manter até 200 toneladas de material por dia fora dos aterros sanitários, de acordo com uma análise do departamento.
Isso também reduzirá os custos, disseram as autoridades, já que a cidade terá que comprar menos pedras extraídas por quilômetro pavimentado.
As equipes da cidade já pavimentaram mais de 6 milhas de rodovias no Brooklyn com a nova mistura e monitorarão a durabilidade das estradas, disse o DOT em um comunicado.
