A principal autoridade eleitoral de Utah foi alvo de uma carta “suspeita” contendo pó branco e assinada pelo “Exército de Eliminação de Traidores dos Estados Unidos”, anunciou seu gabinete na sexta-feira. O FBI teria interceptado a carta em Reno, Nevada, naquela manhã.
A vice-governadora Deidre Henderson é uma das pelo menos 20 autoridades eleitorais estaduais que receberam ou foram as destinatárias pretendidas de tais pacotes na última semana, de acordo com uma declaração de seu gabinete.
“Este incidente é a mais recente tática em uma tendência nacional de ameaças e intimidação contra autoridades eleitorais. Mas não seremos intimidados”, disse Henderson. “Sou grato pela ação rápida dos trabalhadores dos correios e da polícia e pela perseverança dos trabalhadores eleitorais que aparecem e fazem seu trabalho todos os dias, apesar de toda a retórica e risco. Nós os amamos. Devemos a eles. Eles são heróis.”
O FBI disse em um comunicado que está investigando uma “série de correspondências suspeitas enviadas a autoridades eleitorais em vários estados”.
“Algumas das cartas continham uma substância desconhecida e estamos trabalhando em conjunto com nossos parceiros de aplicação da lei para responder a cada incidente e coletar as cartas com segurança”, disse um porta-voz do FBI. “Também estamos trabalhando com nossos parceiros para determinar quantas cartas foram enviadas, o indivíduo ou indivíduos responsáveis pelas cartas e o motivo por trás das cartas.”
A declaração de Henderson disse que seu gabinete, em colaboração com as autoridades policiais, “continuará monitorando a situação e tomando todas as precauções necessárias para garantir a segurança dos trabalhadores eleitorais” antes de novembro.
A ameaça vem pouco mais de um ano depois que a Legislatura de Utah cortou a equipe de segurança de Henderson, anteriormente fornecida pela Patrulha Rodoviária de Utah. Sua equipe foi a primeira a ser fornecida a um vice-governador no estado, e veio depois de sua eleição em 2020, quando houve uma “ameaça legítima” feita ao seu gabinete.
“Com base em nossa análise, determinamos que havia uma necessidade que justificava uma resposta”, disse um porta-voz do Departamento de Segurança Pública de Utah na época.
Um porta-voz da Câmara dos Representantes de Utah disse em uma declaração na sexta-feira que segurança extra é fornecida “quando existem ameaças legítimas”.
Um porta-voz do Senado, por sua vez, disse que a legislatura “reforçou proativamente a segurança e os protocolos no Capitólio para garantir a segurança de todos que trabalham, servem e visitam”.
“A liderança do Senado estende sua apreciação à polícia e ao FBI pela ação de interceptar cartas suspeitas”, disse um porta-voz em uma declaração. “Continuar a colaborar com a Patrulha Rodoviária de Utah e implementar recomendações para ajudar a prevenir, interceptar e lidar efetivamente com ameaças potenciais continua sendo uma prioridade. A liderança do Senado está comprometida em manter a integridade do processo eleitoral, ao mesmo tempo em que prioriza a segurança de autoridades eleitas, funcionários e do público.”
Um porta-voz do FBI disse em uma declaração que, junto com o Serviço de Inspeção Postal dos EUA, está “investigando uma série de correspondências suspeitas enviadas a autoridades eleitorais em vários estados”. Algumas dessas cartas, disse o FBI, continham uma “substância desconhecida”.
“Também estamos trabalhando com nossos parceiros para determinar quantas cartas foram enviadas, o indivíduo ou indivíduos responsáveis pelas cartas e o motivo por trás das cartas. Como este é um assunto em andamento, não comentaremos mais sobre a investigação, mas o público pode ter certeza de que a segurança é nossa maior prioridade”, disse a porta-voz do FBI Sandra Barker na declaração. “Também gostaríamos de lembrar a todos que tenham cuidado ao lidar com correspondências, especialmente de remetentes não reconhecidos. Se você vir algo suspeito, entre em contato com a polícia imediatamente.”
O Serviço de Inspeção Postal dos EUA não respondeu imediatamente a um pedido de mais detalhes sobre a carta.
A Gerência de Emergência do Condado de Washoe não estava envolvida na resposta em Reno, disse a gerente de emergência Kelly Echeverria ao The Tribune por e-mail.
Desde a eleição de 2020, após a qual falsidades sobre fraude eleitoral proliferaram enquanto alguns republicanos tentavam explicar a derrota do ex-presidente Donald Trump, autoridades que supervisionam as eleições têm sofrido um aumento nas ameaças.
Em uma pesquisa com autoridades eleitorais locais divulgada no início deste ano pelo Brennan Center for Justice, 38% relataram ter sofrido ameaças, assédio ou abuso. Em meio ao comportamento hostil, muitos deixaram seus cargos.
Desde 2020, mais da metade dos funcionários dos condados de Utah — os funcionários encarregados de administrar as eleições — optaram por se afastar de suas funções.
