Dados sugerem que farmácias, bares e bancos foram responsáveis por metade dos fechamentos nas principais ruas da Grã-Bretanha nos primeiros seis meses deste ano.
Um total de 6.945 lojas fecharam até agora em 2024, o que equivale a 38 lojas por dia.
Em média, 18 farmácias, 16 bares e nove bancos fecham todas as semanas entre janeiro e junho – de acordo com pesquisa da empresa de contabilidade PwC.
Mas apenas três lojas de conveniência e uma rede de cafés foram abertas no local, destacando as grandes mudanças que estavam ocorrendo nos centros das cidades.
Maureen Brewster é dona da loja de presentes Avoca em Pershore, Worcestershire, que perdeu uma farmácia e seu último banco no primeiro semestre de 2024. “Aos 85 anos, isso finalmente me forçou a fazer operações bancárias on-line”, disse ela.
“Não posso pagar, devido a taxas e impostos, usar nossa máquina de cartão para transações abaixo de £ 5. Então, se as pessoas não conseguem sacar dinheiro do banco ou dos caixas eletrônicos, isso significa que perco uma venda”, disse ela à BBC.
“Não é o ideal — não é bom para mim nem para meus clientes.”
Trabalhando na cidade há 30 anos, a Sra. Brewster viu muitas mudanças em Pershore, que abriga pouco mais de 7.000 pessoas.
“Acho que em algum momento havia cinco bancos em Pershore”, disse ela.
A cidade agora tem um centro bancário temporário e uma agência dos Correios dentro do Tesco Express. Com a ajuda de um colega, a Sra. Brewster finalmente conseguiu se estabelecer com serviços bancários empresariais on-line.
Mas a grande questão para Pershore e tantos outros lugares é: como preencher as lacunas?
“O desafio para as ruas principais é que coisas como bancos, pubs e farmácias dão às pessoas um motivo para visitá-las regularmente”, disse Kien Tan, consultor sênior de varejo da PwC.
“Mas também houve uma mudança de longo prazo em fazer muitas coisas online, então há menos necessidade de locais físicos. E quando saímos, queremos ir talvez para algum lugar mais conveniente, como um parque de varejo, onde podemos dirigir e fazer todas as nossas compras de uma só vez”, acrescentou.
Os dados abrangem empresas com mais de cinco pontos de venda e incluem tudo, desde varejo e hospitalidade até academias, bancos e cabeleireiros. Não inclui comerciantes independentes.
Embora mais de 4.600 lojas tenham sido abertas, um aumento em relação ao mesmo período do ano passado, não foi o suficiente para compensar o número de empresas que fecharam.
Isso significa mais de 2.000 pontos de venda a menos — um declínio um pouco maior que o do ano anterior.
“Estamos medindo isso há mais de uma década e a cada ano há mais pontos de venda fechando do que abrindo, e isso afeta predominantemente as High Streets. Então, a realidade é que teremos que começar a pensar em maneiras diferentes de usá-los e transformá-los”, disse o Sr. Tan.
Vencedores e perdedores
Os químicos lideraram os fechamentos, enquanto a Boots fechou lojas e a rede de farmácias Lloyds desapareceu completamente.
As lojas de conveniência foram a categoria com melhor desempenho, com supermercados como Morrisons e Asda abrindo novas lojas.
Também foi um primeiro ano difícil para takeaways e restaurantes. Após um ano de crescimento, essas categorias foram atingidas por dezenas de fechamentos, enquanto o setor de hospitalidade luta com custos mais altos e demanda mais fraca.
O único ponto positivo foram os parques de varejo, onde as redes abriram mais espaços pelo segundo ano consecutivo, com novos drive-throughs com grande demanda.
