Os cortes de taxas pelo Fed devem, ao longo do tempo, levar a menores custos de empréstimos para hipotecas, empréstimos para automóveis e cartões de crédito, impulsionando as finanças dos americanos e apoiando mais gastos e crescimento. Os proprietários de imóveis poderão refinanciar hipotecas a taxas mais baixas, economizando em pagamentos mensais e até mesmo transferir dívidas de cartão de crédito para empréstimos pessoais de menor custo ou linhas de crédito imobiliário. As empresas também podem tomar empréstimos e investir mais. As taxas médias de hipotecas já caíram para uma baixa de 18 meses de 6,2%, de acordo com a Freddie Mac, estimulando um salto na demanda por refinanciamentos.
“É um passo na direção certa”, disse Laura Rosner-Warburton, economista sênior da MarcoPolicy Perspectives, sobre a decisão do Fed na quarta-feira.
Os cortes adicionais de taxas que indicou que fará, ela disse, ”impedirão riscos de construção e a taxa de desemprego de aumentar. Eles estão tentando manter a economia em boa forma.”
Em um conjunto atualizado de projeções, os formuladores de políticas coletivamente preveem uma queda mais rápida na inflação do que há três meses, mas também um desemprego maior. Eles preveem que seu indicador de inflação preferido cairá para 2,3% até o final do ano, de seus atuais 2,5%, e para 2,1% até o final de 2025. E agora esperam que a taxa de desemprego suba ainda mais este ano, para 4,4%, de 4,2% agora, e permaneça lá até o final de 2025. Isso está acima de suas previsões anteriores de 4% para o final deste ano e 4,2% para 2025.
Powell foi pressionado em sua entrevista coletiva sobre se a decisão do Fed de cortar sua taxa básica em meio ponto percentual anormalmente grande é um reconhecimento de que o banco central esperou muito tempo para começar a reduzir as taxas de empréstimo.
”Não achamos que estamos atrasados”, ele respondeu. ”Achamos que isso é oportuno. Mas acho que você pode considerar isso como um sinal do nosso comprometimento em não ficar para trás. Não estamos vendo pedidos crescentes (de desemprego), não estamos vendo demissões crescentes, não estamos ouvindo das empresas que isso é algo que vai acontecer.”
