Milhares de pessoas compareceram ao funeral da maratonista olímpica Rebecca Cheptegei, que foi incendiada pelo ex-namorado e morreu mais tarde no leste de Uganda.
Dickson Ndiema a atacou com gasolina há menos de quinze dias, do lado de fora de sua casa, no vizinho noroeste do Quênia, perto de onde ela treinava.
O assassinato da mulher de 33 anos e sua natureza brutal deixaram sua família perturbada e chocaram muitas outras pessoas ao redor do mundo.
Ele ressaltou os altos níveis de violência contra as mulheres no Quênia e o fato de que várias atletas femininas foram vítimas nos últimos anos.
Entre os presentes na cerimônia fúnebre no campo de uma escola em Bukwo, distrito natal de Cheptegei, estão outros atletas vestindo camisetas pretas com o slogan “diga não à violência de gênero”.
Mais cedo, com seu caixão em exposição e coberto com a bandeira de Uganda, os líderes locais realizaram uma cerimônia memorial.
Eles observaram um momento de silêncio e aplaudiram de pé enquanto prestavam homenagem ao falecido atleta.
Os conselheiros disseram que Cheptegei vivia “uma vida simples e focada” e sempre oferecia orientação aos seus colegas atletas. “Ela inspirou muitas crianças na área a se juntarem ao atletismo”, disse um deles.
Eles também propuseram nomear uma estrada e um estádio esportivo local em sua homenagem.
Ela deve ser enterrada mais tarde no sábado na propriedade de seu pai, nas proximidades.
Cheptegei morreu no hospital quatro dias após o ataque. Os médicos disseram que ela sofreu queimaduras em mais de 80% do corpo, o que “levou à falência de múltiplos órgãos”.
Ndiema, que também sofreu queimaduras depois que parte do combustível atingiu seu próprio corpo, morreu na segunda-feira.
Ele atacou a mãe de dois filhos depois que ela voltava de um culto na igreja God’s Dwelling Ministry.
A pastora local, Caroline Atieno, lembra-se de uma “pessoa maravilhosa… temente a Deus”.
Depois de ouvir o que havia acontecido, ela conseguiu falar com Cheptegei por telefone enquanto estava no hospital.
A atleta perguntou primeiro sobre os filhos, que estavam bem, disse o pastor Podcast diário da África da BBC.
Então Cheptegei falou sobre seu agressor: “Você quer dizer que Dickson não é capaz de ver tudo o que eu fiz por ele? Ele não conseguiu se lembrar de uma ou duas coisas que eu fiz por ele e parar de me atear fogo? Por que ele fez isso comigo?”
Na sexta-feira, familiares, amigos e ativistas contra a violência de gênero visitaram seu caixão em uma funerária na cidade queniana de Eldoret, antes de ele ser levado embora.
Sua mãe, Agnes Cheptegei, cobrindo o rosto em sinal de angústia, usava uma sacola de lembrança que a atleta recebeu nas recentes Olimpíadas de Paris, onde ficou em 44º lugar na maratona.
Ela estava vestida com uma camiseta com o slogan “ser mulher não deve ser uma sentença de morte” estampado.
A mãe de dois filhos foi a terceira atleta mulher a ser morta no Quênia nos últimos três anos. Em cada caso, parceiros românticos atuais ou antigos foram nomeados como os principais suspeitos pela polícia.
Em 2021, a recordista mundial Agnes Tirop foi esfaqueada até a morte e seis meses depois Damaris Mutua foi estrangulada.
Ataques a mulheres se tornaram uma grande preocupação no Quênia. Em 2022, pelo menos 34% das mulheres disseram ter sofrido violência física, de acordo com uma pesquisa nacional.
Alguns observadores dizem que as atletas femininas estão se tornando cada vez mais vulneráveis.
“[This is] porque elas vão contra as normas tradicionais de gênero, onde a mulher está apenas na cozinha, cozinhando e cuidando das crianças. Mas agora as atletas femininas estão se tornando mais independentes, financeiramente independentes”, disse Joan Chelimo, que foi cofundadora da Tirop’s Angels para ajudar a destacar a questão da violência contra as mulheres.
“Não queremos que isso aconteça com nenhuma outra mulher, seja ela atleta, da aldeia ou uma jovem”, disse Rachel Kamweru, porta-voz do departamento de gênero e ação afirmativa do governo, à BBC.
Quando Cheptegei começou a correr, ela se juntou às Forças de Defesa Popular de Uganda em 2008, o que a ajudou a se sustentar.
Sua última corrida foi nas Olimpíadas de Paris. Embora tenha ficado em 44º, as pessoas em sua área natal ainda se referiam a ela como “campeã”.
Ela ganhou ouro no Campeonato Mundial de Corrida de Montanha e Trilha em Chiang Mai, Tailândia, em 2022.
