Kalani Sitake me lembra um pouco Madame Z, menos as vestes, o melão e o incenso. Quatro semanas após o início da temporada da BYU, parece evidente que há mais de um mês ele acertou em cheio uma série de coisas sobre os Cougars, coisas que poucos puderam ver.
Depois que a BYU venceu o Kansas State no sábado à noite, eu estava pensando na conexão Sitake-Zelda. Foi aí que o treinador torceu para um lado e para o outro, falando dentro dos mesmos parágrafos sobre algumas coisas que seu time fez de errado, ao mesmo tempo em que apontou coisas que fez certo.
Ele poderia ricochetear seus pensamentos assim facilmente, sem causar danos a nada nem a ninguém, com uma vitória garantida por 38-9. Mas houve mais ricochetes, saltos mais profundos e mais rápidos entre a satisfação de um início de temporada inesperado por 4 a 0 e a urgência de se preparar para o trabalho que ainda estava por vir. Só mais uma vitória e seu time empatará no total do ano passado.
Questionado no sábado à noite sobre a declaração de seu time, Sitake respondeu: “Mostramos que podemos jogar. … A pergunta era: ‘Que tipo de equipe é essa?’ Acho que há muitas incógnitas, mas tudo bem. Talvez as pessoas saibam um pouco mais agora. Não vamos mais surpreender ninguém… então temos que estar prontos, continuar trabalhando e ser humildes.”
Dito isso, Sitake estava enviando uma mensagem de dois gumes a todos aqueles na mídia, no setor de previsões, nas arquibancadas e em todos os outros lugares que duvidavam não apenas do talento desta iteração específica dos Cougars, mas também de sua trajetória. e também à sua equipe, orientando seus jogadores a não atrapalharem um início promissor de segunda viagem pela nova liga com uma súbita falta de foco e muita pomposidade ainda imerecida. Sua resposta: “Trabalho duro. Você pode compensar a diferença em muitas coisas se tiver ética de trabalho, e acho que temos. Temos a paixão, a inteligência e o compromisso para fazer tudo certo e chegaremos lá. Estou animado. Quero que todos vejam o que vemos.”

Sitake também afirmou que havia jogadores desconhecidos em seu time que fariam a transição para estrelas nesta temporada: “Estou contando com isso. É isso que esta equipe pode e deve fazer. Haverá alguns que ninguém previu e alguns que aproveitarão novas oportunidades. Temos muitos caras aqui que podem jogar no próximo nível. Eu gostaria de vê-los fazer grandes jogadas antes de seguirem em frente.”
Até agora, os destaques universitários, se não os candidatos profissionais, estão surgindo ou dando indícios de emergir. Caras como Jack Kelly, Isaiah Glasker, Harrison Taggart, Mory Bamba, Crew Wakley, Darius Lassiter, o maluco Sione Moa, entre outros.
E grandes jogadas têm sido fundamentais para o sucesso da BYU, como foi evidenciado naquela corrida do final do segundo até o terceiro quarto contra os Wildcats. Essa pode ter sido uma das explosões mais loucas que alguém já viu, grandes jogadas feitas pelo ataque, pela defesa e por times especiais.
A defesa foi discutida longamente por Sitake durante seus prognósticos e ele estava convencido de que os resultados seriam melhores. Até o momento, as duas equipes P4 que os Cougars enfrentaram – SMU e K-State – não conseguiram marcar um único touchdown. “Fique de olho nesse lado da bola”, disse Sitake. “Temos alguns jogadores lá.”
No geral, Sitake estava mais otimista do que qualquer pessoa com quem conversei sobre o futebol da BYU. Talvez seja trabalho de treinador, mas ele estava numa ilha no meio de um vasto oceano. Vegas não estava otimista, de jeito nenhum. Na verdade, os criadores de probabilidades disseram que as chances de Sitake ser o técnico demitido primeiro nesta temporada eram extremamente altas, a sexta maior entre todos os treinadores da FBS.
Sitake disse que sabia melhor.
“Somos um pouco misteriosos. E eu não me importo. Não há nada de errado com as pessoas de fora não saberem o que temos. Estamos observando o talento que está lá. Somos muito diferentes do que éramos no ano passado.”
Ele disse que a adversidade de um ano atrás ajudou a BYU a descobrir como jogar no Big 12: “Houve muitas coisas no ano passado que nossos rapazes não sabiam. Agora, eles fazem. Eles vieram juntos. … Não sei qual será o disco. Ninguém sabe. Mas não acho que as pessoas nos entendam corretamente. Somos maiores e mais rápidos. Somos uma equipe melhor.”
Ele estava certo, todos os outros estavam errados. De qualquer forma, é assim que parece, um terço da temporada. Os Cougars são uma equipe impecável, melhor e além de seu recorde? Eles permanecerão invictos? Não, eles não são, eles não irão, e Sitake reconhece pelo menos o primeiro agora, tomando cuidado para não ver e insistir em ver apenas o buraco, não o donut, até agora. Mas ele sabe que seu ataque precisa melhorar para manter a ascensão nas conferências. A média de 390 jardas totais não será boa o suficiente para continuar uma subida íngreme.
A referida defesa mantém as equipes com uma média de 12,8 pontos e 269 jardas no total. Curiosamente, a BYU está obtendo exatamente o mesmo número de jardas corridas em média que cede aos oponentes – 136,3, o mesmo número de tentativas gerais de corrida – 137, e o mesmo número total de touchdowns corridos – quatro. Ele está conseguindo o dobro de jardas de passe e nove TDs no total contra zero para seus oponentes.

Embora ele sorria durante as entrevistas pós-jogo após cada vitória, exibindo uma espécie de expressão que grita: “Eu disse a todos vocês, idiotas, que seríamos formidáveis este ano e vocês não ouviram”, há também uma evidente chatice pós-jogo, um inconfundível sentindo que está plenamente consciente de que sua equipe deve avançar e subir nas próximas semanas, e isso acontecerá.
Sitake atingiu o alvo em agosto, quando muitos perderam. Ele ainda acertará em novembro?
