O governo do Reino Unido se ofereceu para dividir o risco financeiro da candidatura de Glasgow para sediar os Jogos da Commonwealth em 2026.
No entanto, rejeitou um pedido do governo escocês para financiar todo o custo dos Jogos.
A BBC Scotland viu uma carta da ministra dos esportes do Reino Unido, Stephanie Peacock, ao secretário de saúde escocês, Neil Gray, que descreve seu apoio a “uma contribuição adicional de até £ 2,3 milhões” a ser fornecida para o evento.
Ela então afirma que seria sua “forte preferência” que o governo escocês igualasse esse valor, o que ajudaria a cobrir qualquer aumento nos custos de segurança caso os níveis de ameaça terrorista aumentassem antes dos jogos.
De acordo com a carta, Gray disse ao governo do Reino Unido em agosto que Glasgow sedia os Jogos estaria “dependente de o governo do Reino Unido fornecer uma subscrição total e ilimitada do risco financeiro relacionado ao evento”.
Em sua resposta, Peacock escreve que a “justificativa para sua solicitação… é menos clara” e que o governo do Reino Unido “não pode se comprometer a subscrever integralmente o risco de um evento que o governo escocês se comprometeu a sediar”.
Ela acrescentou que nenhum financiamento foi solicitado pela Commonwealth Games Scotland e que cerca de £ 27 milhões já estão reservados como fundo de contingência.
A carta da Peacock também afirmou que nenhum dos fundos propostos poderia ser usado “para aprimorar o conceito ou a ambição dos Jogos”, aparentemente em resposta a uma sugestão de Neil Gray de que parte do dinheiro extra poderia ser usado para reforçar o evento simplificado.
O governo escocês foi contatado para comentar.
O primeiro ministro John Swinney disse anteriormente aos jornais que fundos públicos não seriam usados nos Jogos.
Glasgow sediou os Jogos em 2014, mas o evento de 2026 seria reduzido após anos de dificuldades para a competição. Ele contaria com entre 10 e 13 esportes, em vez dos 18 que aconteceram na edição de 2014.
Victoria, na Austrália, estava programada originalmente para sediar o evento, mas desistiu em 2023 devido a problemas financeiros.
Desde então, os organizadores têm se esforçado para encontrar um substituto, tendo Glasgow sido sugerido no início deste ano.
A Commonwealth Games Scotland declarou anteriormente que sua proposta não envolveria “nenhuma solicitação significativa de fundos públicos” e que, para economizar dinheiro, apenas quatro locais seriam usados — incluindo o Estádio Scotstoun e a piscina em Tollcross.
No entanto, o Conselho Municipal de Glasgow está actualmente a tentar gerir os cortes orçamentais, levantando questões sobre se há interesse entre as pessoas na cidade em sediar o evento novamente.
