Durante um verão praticamente sem gols, o San Diego Wave tentou de tudo em busca de uma faísca.
Eles demitiram o técnico e então trocaram os técnicos interinos. Eles contrataram jogadores da Europa enquanto permitiam que outros fossem em busca de oportunidades no exterior. Eles perderam uma lenda, descartaram uma estratégia e traçaram algo completamente diferente.
Na quarta-feira à noite, quando o verão se transformou em outono, o Wave recebeu o golpe de pontuação que eles esperaram durante toda a temporada.
María Sánchez marcou todos os três gols do clube em uma sequência de 18 minutos na vitória do San Diego sobre o Portland Thorns FC por 3 a 2 na partida da fase de grupos da Copa dos Campeões da Conacaf W no Snapdragon Stadium.
Embora o resultado não conte para a classificação da Liga Nacional de Futebol Feminino nem melhore as chances do clube nos playoffs, ele pode ajudar muito a impulsionar o time Wave, que marcou apenas 17 gols em 20 partidas da temporada regular.
Sanchez, adquirida do Houston Dash no início da temporada, ajudou San Diego a se recuperar de um déficit de dois pontos nos últimos 23 minutos. Sanchez começou com um pênalti de pé esquerdo no minuto 67, cortando a liderança dos Thorns para 2 a 1. Seu cabeceio 90 segundos depois em um passe de Delphine Cascarino, uma francesa importada contratada durante o intervalo olímpico, empatou a partida.
Faltando cinco minutos para o fim do tempo regulamentar, Amirah Ali, do Wave, deu um tiro que atingiu as mãos de um defensor do Portland. Sanchez recebeu o pênalti e marcou o gol da vitória.
Ao fazer isso, Sanchez se tornou a primeira jogadora internacional mexicana a marcar um hat trick em uma partida sancionada pela NWSL. Ela marcou cinco gols para a Wave nesta temporada, espalhados por partidas da NWSL, Concacaf e Summer Cup.
O Wave precisa que Sanchez continue marcando pontos se eles esperam fazer um esforço no final da temporada. San Diego está sem o atacante Alex Morgan, que se aposentou no início deste mês; a atacante Sofia Jakobsson, que deixou o clube para buscar oportunidades no exterior; e a atacante Jaedyn Shaw, que está machucada e não joga desde que voltou das Olimpíadas.
Ao vencer na quarta-feira, o Wave melhorou para 2-0-0 na fase de grupos da Champions Cup. O clube retornará à competição da NWSL no sábado, quando viajar para o Chicago Red Stars. Com 4-9-7, o Wave está em 12º na classificação da NWSL. Os oito melhores times vão para os playoffs.
A próxima partida em casa do Wave será em 28 de setembro contra o Thorns.
