A torcida pela ex-candidata presidencial Hillary Clinton começou antes mesmo de ela subir ao palco na noite de quinta-feira – assim que seu nome foi mencionado na introdução.
Antes mesmo de dizer uma palavra, Clinton subiu ao palco e foi aplaudida de pé.
Clinton viajou para o teatro Bushnell em Hartford como parte de uma turnê por várias cidades para promover seu quarto livro de memórias, que aborda uma ampla variedade de tópicos coletados ao longo da vida como graduada pela Faculdade de Direito de Yale, primeira-dama, senadora dos EUA e secretária de Estado.
“Eu estava sentado nos bastidores quando percebi que não se tratava de uma palestra sobre um livro”, disse o senador norte-americano Chris Murphy, que fez perguntas a Clinton como moderador. “Isto é um comício.”
A multidão altamente partidária de democratas queria ouvir sua opinião sobre o republicano Donald Trump, que atualmente luta contra a vice-presidente Kamala Harris a menos de seis semanas do dia das eleições. Clinton, que perdeu para Trump em 2016, disse que os democratas precisam fazer um trabalho melhor para vender a sua mensagem.
“Por que você votaria no partido – e principalmente no cara – que não fez nada por você?” Clinton perguntou. “Esse é um dos grandes mistérios da política americana. Parte disso é que ele fala um bom jogo. Ele elimina o ruído e se conecta com as pessoas. Ele vem com explicações. A razão pela qual você pode ter perdido o emprego ou não ter o emprego que deseja é por causa dos imigrantes que atravessam a fronteira. Depois, ele impede a resolução da crise fronteiriça com uma peça legislativa que foi apoiada tanto pelos republicanos como pelos democratas.”
Clinton acrescentou: “Não estamos a fazer um bom trabalho de comunicação porque temos muitas provas do nosso lado, mas estamos a ter problemas – descobri isto na minha campanha – para ultrapassar todo o ruído e todas as acusações e acusações. o bode expiatório e as explicações fáceis.”
Murphy concordou com Clinton que Trump tem um talento especial para chegar aos seus principais apoiantes e espalhar a sua mensagem.
“A estratégia dele para criar todo esse barulho e distrações atrai você para a conversa”, disse Murphy. “Nós caímos nessa sempre. Ele quer que você fale sobre cães e gatos agora mesmo.”
Clinton escreveu memórias anteriores que cobriram várias partes de sua jornada, incluindo “Living History” em 2003 e “What Happened?” em 2017, que detalhou sua derrota de destaque na eleição presidencial para Trump.
Aos 76 anos, Clinton tem agora uma visão de longo prazo. O título – “Something Lost, Something Gained” – é uma referência a um verso de uma canção famosa, “Both Sides Now”, da cantora Joni Mitchell. Clinton dedicou o livro aos seus três netos e à sua geração.
A música de Mitchell afirma: “Oh, mas agora velhos amigos, eles estão agindo de forma estranha, e balançam a cabeça e me dizem que mudei. Bem, algo se perdeu, mas algo se ganhou, Ao viver cada dia.” A música continua: “Eu olhei para a vida de ambos os lados agora, Da vitória e da derrota e ainda de alguma forma, São as ilusões da vida, eu me lembro, eu realmente não conheço a vida”.
Afeganistão
Clinton escreveu um capítulo do livro – e discutiu-o em detalhe no palco – sobre como se juntou a outros para ajudar mais de 1.000 mulheres a fugir do Afeganistão enquanto os Taliban se movimentavam para assumir o controlo do país devastado pela guerra. Embora já não fosse Secretária de Estado, Clinton trabalhou como cidadã privada e fez amizade com líderes mundiais que conheceu enquanto servia no governo federal.
“Foi realmente um dos meses mais estressantes da minha vida porque tivemos que arrecadar dinheiro para fretar aviões e precisávamos ter pessoas em Cabul para nos ajudar a localizar as mulheres”, disse Clinton. “As mulheres começaram a contactar-nos e a dizer que os talibãs apareceram em casa da minha mãe e perguntaram onde eu estava. Onde posso me esconder? Como chego ao aeroporto? Como faço para chegar à pista do aeroporto? Foi incrivelmente doloroso ouvir essas mulheres educadas e dedicadas tentando tomar essas decisões de vida ou morte.”
A operação foi feita em segredo e houve alguns perigos enquanto as mulheres fugiam do país conturbado.
Num momento assustador, o Taleban embarcou em um ônibus cheio de mulheres com passaporte. Mas então o Taliban começou a pedir vistos e as mulheres não os tinham, disse Clinton. As mulheres no ônibus então chamaram as pessoas que estavam no esforço de evacuação em uma tentativa desesperada de ajuda. Um diplomata albanês que estava ajudando no esforço, disse Clinton, foi então a um supermercado e tirou uma foto de um código de barras em um saco de batatas.
“Ele voltou ao escritório e eles produziram vistos com código de barras – fazendo com que parecesse realmente oficial”, disse Clinton. “Aí mandaram a foto para os telefones de todas as mulheres do ônibus. Então, mais tarde, quando o Taleban estava no ônibus, eles ergueram seus telefones com seu visto com código de barras de batata.”
Inauguração 2017
Dado que Clinton liderava em várias sondagens, muitos Democratas estavam confiantes em Novembro de 2016 de que ela iria ganhar a presidência – e ficaram espantados quando Trump ganhou a votação do Colégio Eleitoral.
“Quando Trump foi eleito, obviamente fiquei arrasado por muitas, muitas razões”, disse Clinton à multidão. “Fui à inauguração, o que foi muito doloroso. Acredito na transferência pacífica de poder.”
Clinton disse que espera um discurso edificante em Washington, DC, para apelar a toda a nação e ajudar a unir o país.
“Em vez disso, foi uma carnificina nas ruas”, disse Clinton. “Não vejo nenhuma carnificina nas ruas e também não vi tanta gente.”
Essa frase recebeu alguns dos aplausos mais fortes da noite.
“Já estive em várias inaugurações e não havia uma multidão particularmente grande”, disse ela.
Clinton então descreveu ter sentado com George e Laura Bush e seu marido, Bill Clinton, na seção de ex-presidentes.
“O discurso termina e Bush se vira para mim e diz: ‘Isso foi uma merda estranha’”, disse Clinton enquanto a multidão ria. “Então, se você não quer mais disso, saia e eleja Kamala Harris!”
Essa foi sua declaração final da noite e Clinton saiu do palco para outra ovação de pé.
Turnê nacional
A aparição de Clinton em Hartford fez parte de uma turnê nacional para promover seu livro, fazendo 16 paradas em um período apertado, de 16 de setembro até o Halloween. Isso inclui muitas das maiores cidades do país, incluindo Nova York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, São Francisco, Seattle, Houston, Filadélfia, Atlanta e Washington, DC
Além dos eventos presenciais, ela apareceu no “The View” da ABC diante de milhões de telespectadores.
Apesar da sua recepção na noite de quinta-feira, Clinton fez inimigos na política e muitos não estão tão entusiasmados como a multidão partidária em Hartford.
Uma resenha de livro no The Washington Post declarou: “Clinton afirma preferir escrever sobre política, mas diz: ‘Espero que a combinação dos dois – o brócolis e o sorvete, por assim dizer – resulte em uma refeição gratificante.’ Bem, não. É tão pouco apetitoso quanto a imagem faz parecer. Este é um livro do tipo coma seus brócolis. Tanto brócolis, tão pouca sobremesa.”
A crítica de Karen Heller continua: “Se você ler as notícias, encontrará poucas surpresas aqui. Clinton prega aos convertidos, a sua legião de admiradores que pagarão alegremente 30 dólares por este livro porque sabem exactamente onde ela se posiciona. Esses fãs poderão conhecer Clinton em sua extensa turnê do livro, que, como qualquer estrela do rock, oferece quatro níveis de “experiências”. ”

Laços de Connecticut
Em seus tempos de faculdade, Clinton morou quatro anos em New Haven, incluindo três na Yale Law School e mais um ano no Yale Child Study Center. Foi em New Haven que ela conheceu um jovem democrata chamado Bill Clinton. O resto é história.
Em 1970, ela e Bill Clinton trabalharam na campanha de Joseph Duffey para o Senado dos EUA, que concorreu com uma plataforma anti-guerra antes de ser derrotado por um jovem republicano chamado Lowell P. Weicker Jr., de Greenwich. Duas décadas depois, Weicker conheceu os Clinton na década de 1990 na Casa Branca e manteve uma fotografia desse encontro na sua casa costeira até à sua morte no ano passado, aos 92 anos.
