Demorou pouco mais de dois minutos para o anfitrião Catonsville acordar Towson, o que o Comets fez quando Jade Pannuty marcou um pênalti cobrado por Veronica Merriman.
Menos de um minuto depois, a veterana de Towson, Kate Wahler, marcou um gol sem assistência que deu início a uma série de oito gols consecutivos que levaram à vitória por 8 a 1.
“Foi um chamado para despertar porque acho que entrando neste jogo estávamos superconfiantes e então tendo isso contra nós, pensamos, ‘OK, rapazes, precisamos nos recompor’”, disse Wahler. “Esqueça o 0-0, reinicie a mentalidade e então marcamos na próxima jogada.”
Faltando 6:33 para o fim do primeiro quarto, Wahler deu assistência para Scarlett Spaulding com um cruzamento e as Generals nunca mais ficaram atrás no placar.
“Trabalhamos muito em nossos cruzamentos esta semana e é isso que temos praticado com nossos jogadores de poste”, disse Wahler, que liderou os Generals com dois gols e duas assistências.
Seu controle no meio-campo foi uma das chaves para o sucesso dos Generals.
“Isso foi algo que praticamos muito esta semana, foi passar muito para o espaço aberto e usar nossos próprios jogadores para abrir espaço no campo”, disse Wahler, um dos seis capitães de Towson. “Acho que fizemos um ótimo trabalho com isso hoje.”
Spaulding acrescentou dois gols no primeiro tempo, enquanto Riley Lovas e Lauren Orbin também marcaram no primeiro tempo. Piper Talman acrescentou uma assistência.
Charlotte Hemingway e Sarina Saki marcaram para as Generals no segundo tempo.
Ambas as equipes vinham de derrotas por 10 a 0 — Towson para Bryn Mawr; Catonsville para Garrison Forest.
“Ao vir aqui hoje, nossa mentalidade era apenas escovar isso [loss] longe e apenas começar um novo jogo e tentar fazer alguns gols”, disse Wahler.
O gol precoce de Catonsville foi a centelha para a treinadora de Towson, Natalee Schuman, cujo filho de 3 anos, Robert, e sua filha de 1 ano, Elizabeth, estavam na lateral do campo mantendo-a ocupada.
“Eu acho que [early goal] meio que alimentou nosso fogo hoje depois de ontem”, disse Schuman. “Temos trabalhado muito com nosso controle de bola e conseguimos trabalhar no campo com nossas entradas e saídas.”
A treinadora de Catonsville, Emma Walsh, admitiu que o primeiro gol logo no início lhe deu algum alívio depois de perder para Garrison e jogar contra Notre Dame Prep e Mount de Sales em um torneio no sábado.
“Acho que eles precisavam desse gol porque tivemos muitos jogos difíceis”, disse Walsh. “Eu sabia que esse seria um jogo difícil. Jogamos contra eles duas vezes no ano passado porque sei que o elenco deles está muito bom agora, mas nos preparamos o máximo que pudemos.”
Os Comets marcaram em seu primeiro escanteio de penalidade do jogo, mas falharam em seus últimos 13 escanteios. Pannuty armou várias dessas chances, incluindo seis no terceiro quarto com jogada estelar ao redor do círculo.
“[Pannuty] é muito boa. Ela está liderando nosso time este ano e não apenas em campo. Ela é obviamente habilidosa, mas também está ajudando a ensinar”, disse Welsh. “Como algumas pessoas nunca jogaram antes e como este é talvez o terceiro ano delas jogando hóquei de campo, então ainda estamos ensinando e desenvolvendo-as e ela está assumindo um papel em ajudar a liderar através disso também.”
Towson tem mais veteranos em seu elenco (17) do que os Comets têm jogadores (15) e Schuman deu tempo de jogo a vários reservas contra os Comets.
“Estamos confortáveis jogando com qualquer um do nosso time porque trabalhamos como uma unidade tão concisa este ano, e você realmente pôde ver a diferença quando tivemos nosso torneio no sábado, quando jogamos contra Fallston e C. Milton Wright”, disse Schuman. “Foi uma experiência muito reveladora para nós porque fomos capazes de fazer a transição de tudo o que estávamos trabalhando desde o verão para o campo naquele dia.”
