Perguntas sobre como o Mets produziria o ataque sem Francisco Lindor se acalmaram por mais uma noite depois que eles usaram um quarto inning de nove corridas para terminar uma varredura do Washington Nationals. O Mets derrotou o Nats por 10 a 0 no Citi Field com Brandon Nimmo e Luisangel Acuña fazendo home runs e todos os membros da escalação inicial alcançando a base.
José Quintana continuou sua sequência de shutout ao derrotar Washington em sete entradas, sua terceira partida consecutiva sem sofrer gols.
Depois de acumular apenas sete corridas em três jogos contra o Philadelphia Phillies e o Nats (14 a 16 de setembro), o Mets agora marcou 20 em seus últimos dois contra o Washington (68 a 84). Eles precisarão de cada pedaço desse tamanho de escalação esta semana, quando o Philadelphia vier à cidade para os últimos quatro jogos em casa da temporada, mas até agora, o Mets tem se destacado sem seu melhor jogador.
“Ver os caras se destacando, tem sido muito, muito legal”, disse Nimmo. “Uma das coisas que temos tentado dizer é apenas seja você mesmo, certo? Você não precisa ser nada mais do que você mesmo. Você não pode substituir Francisco Lindor, mas somos bons o suficiente para que, se formos apenas nossas melhores versões de nós mesmos, ainda possamos vencer jogos e ainda ser um time muito, muito bom.”
O Atlanta Braves derrotou o Cincinnati Reds para ficar a uma distância impressionante do Mets, que agora está empatado com o Arizona Diamondbacks pela segunda vaga do NL Wild Card com um recorde de 84-68. O Amazins está a apenas 2,5 jogos de alcançar o San Diego Padres (87-66) no topo da classificação do Wild Card.
“É mais ou menos para isso que você joga”, disse Nimmo. “A temporada regular é uma rotina; você a supera e faz o que tem que fazer todos os dias. Mas nessa época do ano, quando a energia está alta, o clima está começando a esfriar um pouco, tem aquela sensação de que as coisas significam mais, cada arremesso significa mais. Então é muito divertido.”
O canhoto novato DJ Herz navegou pelos três primeiros innings antes de implodir para sete corridas merecidas no quarto. Ele eliminou o lado no terceiro, batalhando com os rebatedores nº 9, 1 e 2 do Mets. Eles o fizeram lançar 15 arremessos, e já tinham visto todos eles quando ele chegou ao final do quarto.
Ele colocou os quatro primeiros rebatedores em campo e sofreu três corridas antes de conseguir a primeira eliminação, eliminando Francisco Alvarez para sua quarta e última eliminação.
Herz (4-8) caminhou Nimmo para abrir o inning e Pete Alonso fez uma rebatida simples para a esquerda. Tyrone Taylor então fez uma dupla para a lacuna centro-direita para marcar Nimmo, e Mark Vientos limpou as bases com uma rebatida simples de duas corridas para colocar os Mets na frente, 3-0.
“A bola rápida estava jogando para cima, e então o changeup foi bom. Essa combinação foi difícil na primeira vez na escalação, mas então sentimos que fizemos alguns bons ajustes”, disse o gerente Carlos Mendoza. “Manter a bola rápida foi furtivo, mas então ele pendurou alguns changeups que conseguimos manter e vencer.”
Com um eliminado, Herz deu walk em Harrison Bader para colocar corredores na primeira e segunda base. Acuña mandou outro rebatedor para casa e Jose Iglesias lotou as bases com um single. Os Nats foram para o bullpen para pegar o destro Jacob Barnes, que foi de pouca utilidade.
Starling Marte acertou um single de duas corridas e Nimmo então acertou um home run de três corridas que quase atingiu a Shea Bridge para fechar a recuperação.
“Acho que isso mostra o quão profunda é nossa escalação”, disse Nimmo. “Conseguimos causar danos de 1 a 9 e tivemos rebatidas realmente boas de 1 a 9. Continuamos colocando essa pressão sobre eles e finalmente a represa se rompeu.”
Quintana (10-9) limitou Washington a apenas duas rebatidas e duas caminhadas, eliminando quatro. O canhoto veterano não permitiu uma corrida para os Nats durante toda a temporada e não permitiu nenhuma em seus últimos 23 1/3 innings, o período mais longo de sua carreira. Em suas últimas cinco partidas, ele só cedeu uma corrida merecida e uma não merecida (32 innings).
Quintana atacou os rebatedores e conseguiu fazer isso graças à defesa atrás dele.
Acuña fez algumas jogadas que mostraram seu alcance como shortstop, Iglesias foi sólido como sempre e Taylor fez uma fantástica recepção na parede para roubar bases extras de Andres Chaparro no sétimo.
“Um jogador de beisebol”, disse Mendoza. “Esse cara está sempre pronto. Não importa a situação, se ele está na escalação inicial chegando no meio do jogo. Grande jogada ali.”
Os destros Phil Maton e Huascar Brazobán finalizaram o trabalho mantendo Washington sem gols no oitavo e nono innings, respectivamente.
O segundo home run da carreira de Acuña veio na parte inferior do oitavo. O destro Zach Brzykcy não conseguiu finalizá-lo em 1-2, dando ao novato um changeup que ele pegou sobre a cerca do campo esquerdo. Foi o segundo home run em duas noites para o irmão mais novo do atual MVP da NL, Ronald Acuña Jr.
“Estamos perto de terminar a temporada, e estamos em boa posição”, disse Quintana. “Nós nos sentimos muito fortes.”
