A agência da ONU para refugiados palestinos diz que seis de seus funcionários foram mortos em um ataque aéreo israelense em uma das escolas que administra no centro de Gaza.
O porta-voz da Defesa Civil de Gaza, Mahmud Bassal, disse que 18 pessoas foram mortas no ataque à escola al-Jaouni, no campo de refugiados de Nuseirat, que está sendo usado como abrigo por milhares de palestinos deslocados.
O exército israelense afirma ter realizado um “ataque preciso contra terroristas” que planejavam ataques na escola e que tomou medidas para evitar danos a civis.
O secretário-geral da ONU, António Guterres, disse que o ataque constituiu “violações dramáticas do direito internacional humanitário”. em uma postagem no X.
A Unrwa disse que o ataque marcou “o maior número de mortos entre nossa equipe em um único incidente” desde o início da guerra entre Israel e o Hamas em outubro. O órgão disse que foi a quinta vez que a escola foi atingida nos últimos 11 meses.
Em julho, 16 pessoas foram mortas em um ataque que, segundo o exército israelense, teve como alvo diversas estruturas na escola usadas pelos combatentes do Hamas.
O Hamas — que é considerado um grupo terrorista por Israel, Reino Unido e outros países — negou usar escolas e outros locais civis para fins militares.
O embaixador de Israel na ONU, Danny Danon, criticou as críticas de Guterres ao ataque e disse que era “inconcebível que a ONU continue a condenar Israel em sua guerra justa contra terroristas”.
As forças israelenses lançaram uma campanha para destruir o Hamas em resposta ao ataque sem precedentes do grupo no sul de Israel em 7 de outubro, no qual cerca de 1.200 pessoas foram mortas e outras 251 foram levadas de volta para Gaza como reféns.
Mais de 41.080 pessoas foram mortas em Gaza desde então, de acordo com o Ministério da Saúde do território, administrado pelo Hamas.
O porta-voz da ONU, Stéphane Dujarric, disse aos repórteres que a ONU condenou “todos os ataques aéreos que têm como alvo civis e aqueles que também têm como alvo instalações da ONU”.
Um vídeo das consequências do ataque aéreo de quarta-feira mostrou centenas de pessoas inspecionando o térreo fortemente danificado de uma ala da escola al-Jaouni, bem como os restos de uma estrutura adjacente que parecia ter sido destruída.
Outras imagens mostraram ambulâncias levando homens, mulheres e crianças feridos, supostamente feridos no ataque, para o hospital de Al-Aqsa, na cidade de Deir al-Balah.
Em uma publicação no Telegram, a agência de Defesa Civil administrada pelo Hamas identificou uma das mortas como filha de um de seus socorristas, Momin Salmi. Ela disse que ele não via Shadia há 10 meses porque ele havia permanecido no norte de Gaza enquanto sua esposa e seus oito filhos haviam fugido para o sul.
As Forças de Defesa de Israel (IDF) disseram que as aeronaves “realizaram um ataque preciso contra terroristas que estavam operando dentro de um centro de comando e controle do Hamas” localizado na escola al-Jaouni.
“Várias medidas foram tomadas para mitigar o risco de ferir civis, incluindo o uso de munições precisas, vigilância aérea e inteligência adicional”, acrescentou.
“Este é mais um exemplo do abuso sistemático da infraestrutura civil pela organização terrorista Hamas, em violação ao direito internacional.”
O gabinete de comunicação social do governo de Gaza, gerido pelo Hamas, acusou Israel de um “massacre brutal”.
Mais tarde, a Unrwa disse em um comunicado que dois ataques aéreos atingiram a escola e seus arredores, que abrigavam cerca de 12.000 pessoas deslocadas, principalmente mulheres e crianças.
“Entre os mortos estava o gerente do abrigo da Unrwa e outros membros da equipe que prestavam assistência aos deslocados”, disse.
A agência insistiu que “escolas e outras infraestruturas civis devem ser protegidas o tempo todo”, acrescentando: “Elas não são um alvo”.
“Pedimos a todas as partes envolvidas no conflito que nunca usem escolas ou áreas ao redor delas para fins militares ou de combate.”
Horas antes do incidente, a UNRWA disse em um relatório de situação que quase 70% de suas escolas em Gaza foram atingidas durante a guerra.
Também foi relatado que 214 de seus funcionários foram mortos, juntamente com pelo menos 563 pessoas deslocadas que estavam abrigadas em suas escolas e outras instalações.
Israel já acusou a UNRWA de apoiar o Hamas.
A agência negou isso, mas a ONU disse em agosto que havia demitido nove dos 13.000 funcionários da UNRWA em Gaza depois que os investigadores encontraram evidências de que eles poderiam estar envolvidos no ataque de 7 de outubro. Outros 10 funcionários foram inocentados por insuficiência de provas.
Israel também alegou que centenas de funcionários da UNRWA eram membros de grupos terroristas, mas uma revisão da ONU publicada em abril concluiu que Israel não havia fornecido evidências para suas alegações.
Em um evento separado na quarta-feira, as IDF anunciaram que dois soldados israelenses foram mortos e outros oito ficaram feridos em um acidente de helicóptero durante a noite no sul de Gaza.
O helicóptero estava em uma missão para evacuar um soldado gravemente ferido para um hospital para tratamento médico e caiu durante o pouso na área de Rafah, disse um comunicado.
“Um inquérito inicial conduzido indica que o acidente não foi causado por fogo inimigo. A causa do acidente ainda está sob investigação”, acrescentou.
