Quando os Twins estavam atrás do Baltimore por sete corridas na oitava entrada na sexta-feira, vários jogadores exibiam olhares inexpressivos enquanto olhavam para frente no banco de reservas.
Os Twins completaram um dos piores colapsos do final da temporada da Liga Principal de Beisebol deste século. Em seis semanas, eles passaram de um time com 90% de chances de playoff para um time que terminou em quarto lugar na Liga Americana Central.
“Isso vai me incomodar para sempre”, disse o técnico dos Twins, Rocco Baldelli. “Não haverá maneira de contornar isso. Vou pensar muito sobre isso e vou usar isso para me motivar de muitas maneiras diferentes daqui para frente, porque nunca mais quero passar por isso novamente.”
É uma vergonha usada em todos os níveis da organização. A propriedade reduziu a folha de pagamento em mais de US$ 30 milhões depois que os Twins avançaram para a AL Division Series nos playoffs do ano passado. A diretoria desperdiçou muitas de suas adições e não conseguiu reforçar a escalação no prazo final de negociação.
Dentro do clube dos Twins, vários jogadores disseram que precisarão de tempo para digerir o que deu errado. Depois de ultrapassar o recorde da temporada em 17 jogos, acima de 0,500, eles venceram apenas 12 dos 37 jogos seguintes. Com suas esperanças nos playoffs em jogo na última semana da temporada, os Twins perderam dois dos três jogos para um time do Miami Marlins com 100 derrotas.
“Se você tem alguém para culpar, culpe-me por ficar dois meses afastado e não fazer parte do time”, disse o shortstop Carlos Correa, que perdeu 51 jogos por causa de fascite plantar no pé direito. “Acho que esse é um dos principais motivos.”
O jogo da culpa se estende por muitos lugares depois de um final tão frustrante. Os Twins entraram na temporada como favoritos da divisão. O núcleo de seu elenco está repleto de jogadores que deveriam estar no auge de suas carreiras.
“É como toda temporada, certo? Você não ganha a World Series, e falamos sobre motivar uns aos outros para sermos melhores na próxima entressafra, no próximo ano, mas são poucos os caras que realmente conseguem isso”, disse Correa. “Quanto mais gente conseguirmos contratar para realmente trabalhar, para realmente levar isso a sério, para realmente sacrificar muito para melhorar, então acabaremos sendo uma equipe melhor. Se os caras apenas receberem a mensagem e ficarem motivados durante a semana ou duas semanas em que a mensagem permanecer com eles, não chegaremos a lugar nenhum.”
