JACKSONVILLE – Trevor Lawrence acredita que o Jacksonville Jaguars pode reverter o curso com uma vitória, talvez até com um drive ou uma jogada.
Saindo do jogo mais embaraçoso do horário nobre da história da franquia, os Jaguars (0-3) tentarão se recuperar do desastre em Houston (2-1) no domingo. É um confronto de divisão que segue um jogo fora de casa e uma semana curta, longe do cenário ideal para uma reviravolta.
Mas Lawrence e o técnico Doug Pederson insistem que o sucesso não está tão longe quanto parecia durante a derrota por 47 a 10 para o Buffalo no Monday Night Football.
“Isso pode acontecer rapidamente”, disse Lawrence na quarta-feira. “Só temos que manter a cabeça baixa e continuar trabalhando. Fique solto, divirta-se, continue voando. Não aperte, não tente forçar a questão a fazer aquela jogada que a transforma. Apenas deixe isso acontecer com você.”
Nada foi fácil para Lawrence nesta temporada. Ele está completando o menor número de sua carreira em 52,8% de seus passes para 560 jardas, com dois touchdowns e uma interceptação. Ele foi demitido 11 vezes, empatou em quinto lugar na NFL e continua cometendo erros de novato no quarto ano.
Lawrence expressou sua frustração – publicamente e nos bastidores. Mas ele está longe de ser o único problema de Jacksonville: o tight end do Pro Bowl, Evan Engram (músculo posterior da coxa), perdeu os últimos dois jogos; a falta de armadores, passes perdidos, previsibilidade ofensiva e péssimos jogos de linha ofensiva também contribuíram.
“Você tenta identificar exatamente o que é”, disse Pederson. “É ele? É a equipe? São lesões? O que é? Eu acho que é tudo. Acho que é o culminar de tudo, algo que temos que continuar a trabalhar.
“Haverá adversidades nesta liga. Você enfrentará isso ano após ano, mas é assim que você se recupera e luta contra isso.”
Os últimos 10 trimestres de Lawrence foram absolutamente brutais, com sua porcentagem de conclusão abaixo de 50%. Ele levou os Jaguars a 13 pontos no período. Sua frustração ficou evidente nas laterais e no vestiário.
Mas ele insiste que não está pressionando – apenas cometendo erros.
“Houve momentos em que fui um pouco indisciplinado com os olhos”, disse Lawrence. “Talvez eu tenha estado um pouco acelerado em algumas de minhas progressões. Acho que algumas vezes meus pés ficaram desleixados, fazendo com que alguns dos meus passes não fossem exatamente onde eu queria.
“Não acho que tenha sido um problema tentar forçar a questão. … Só preciso continuar confiando nisso. Confie no que vejo, confie na minha progressão e leve a bola aos nossos armadores.”
O retorno do Engram pode ajudar. Ele ficou de fora do treino de quarta-feira, mas expressou confiança de que poderia retornar contra os texanos.
“Só precisamos que os caras apareçam e joguem melhor”, disse Engram. “Precisamos que nossos melhores jogadores, nossos líderes, apareçam e joguem melhor. Eu assumo a responsabilidade nisso, em ficar saudável para poder aparecer e fazer isso.”
Lawrence perdeu oito partidas consecutivas, desde a temporada passada. Sete deles vieram sem um recebedor chave: Christian Kirk na reta final da temporada passada e Engram nas últimas duas semanas.
Tal como Lawrence, eles pensam que estão à beira de uma reviravolta.
“É apenas vencer o primeiro”, disse Kirk. “É só juntar tudo e vencer o primeiro jogo e depois veremos para onde vamos a partir daí. Mas acho que vencer um jogo de futebol, especialmente nesta liga, pode definitivamente proporcionar muita confiança.”
