O ex-líder do Partido Unionista Democrático, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, declarou-se inocente das acusações históricas de crimes sexuais durante uma audiência no Tribunal da Coroa de Newry.
O homem de 61 anos é acusado de 18 crimes, que supostamente ocorreram entre 1985 e 2008.
O caso enfrentado pelo ex-deputado de Lagan Valley envolve duas supostas vítimas.
As acusações incluem estupro, quatro acusações de indecência grosseira e 13 acusações de agressão indecente.
Sua esposa, Lady Donaldson, 58, também se declarou inocente de três acusações relacionadas a cumplicidade.
Sua equipe de defesa solicitou a retirada de duas outras acusações contra ela.
O casal foi preso em casa em março de 2024 e continua em liberdade sob fiança.
Na terça-feira, a última etapa do processo envolveu a acusação — o momento em que eles tiveram que apresentar alegações formais.
Ambos os acusados compareceram ao tribunal número um para uma audiência de 10 minutos na terça-feira, enquanto cada uma das acusações era lida para eles.
Ambos responderam “inocentes” para cada acusação, com o ex-parlamentar se abaixando para responder em voz alta e clara no microfone.
O caso será revisto em 25 de outubro.
O juiz Paul Ramsey disse à dupla que eles não são obrigados a comparecer naquela data, pois será uma audiência administrativa.
Eles foram liberados mediante pagamento de fiança.
O tribunal foi informado de que a data do julgamento foi marcada para 24 de março de 2025 e está programada para durar até duas semanas.
Quem é Sir Jeffrey Donaldson?
Sir Jeffrey Donaldson foi eleito líder do DUP em 2021.
Ele foi o parlamentar mais antigo da Irlanda do Norte, tendo sido eleito pela primeira vez para o Parlamento em 1997 como representante do Partido Unionista do Ulster (UUP).
Ele entrou na política pela primeira vez quando trabalhou para o deputado Enoch Powell entre 1982 e 1984, depois de ingressar no UUP.
A carreira de Sir Jeffrey na política de linha de frente começou em 1985, quando ele foi eleito para a Assembleia da Irlanda do Norte como seu membro mais jovem.
Em 2003, ele deixou o UUP para se juntar ao DUP devido à sua oposição de longa data ao Acordo da Sexta-feira Santa de 1998 e à liderança de David Trimble.
Sir Jeffrey recentemente conduziu o DUP de volta ao governo na Irlanda do Norte, encerrando um boicote de dois anos às instituições descentralizadas.
Ele foi nomeado cavaleiro em 2016 por serviços políticos.
Ele se casou com sua esposa Eleanor em 1987.
