Um ladrão em série de cobre do metrô com uma longa ficha de prisão foi preso na quarta-feira por tentar vender cabos de transporte que ele supostamente roubou do sistema de metrô do Brooklyn.
Prince Hayes, 63, foi pego cortando e descascando um pedaço de cabo de cobre de um trilho de metrô, disseram os policiais — e foi rastreado na quarta-feira depois que as autoridades notaram um padrão de cabos de cobre roubados.
Policiais alcançaram Hayes na 19th St. em Gowanus, perto de Scrap King, onde Hayes pretendia vender o cabo roubado, disseram fontes policiais.
Hayes, que teria mais de 60 prisões datadas da década de 1980, foi acusado de posse criminosa de propriedade roubada. Não estava claro de qual estação os cabos vieram.
Sua acusação no tribunal criminal do Brooklyn estava pendente na quarta-feira à noite.
Hayes está no radar do Departamento de Polícia de Nova York desde 2021, quando foi preso perto do mesmo ferro-velho tentando vender 14 quilos de cobre supostamente roubados do sistema de metrô.
“Eu não fiz nada”, disse Hayes na época enquanto era levado para fora da sede do Distrito de Trânsito 30 do NYPD, no centro do Brooklyn. Quando perguntado de onde ele rouba os cabos, ele respondeu secamente: “Não é da sua conta”.
Hayes também foi preso em 2019 tentando vender 15 pés de cobre roubado, que estava pendurado em seu ombro a caminho do mesmo ferro-velho.
“É isso que ele faz”, disse uma fonte policial após o incidente de 2019. “Ele rouba cobre.”
