BOULDER — LaJohntay Wester conhece a tristeza no futebol universitário.
Wester teve uma carreira fantástica na Florida Atlantic, mas viu seus Owls perderem em um field goal walk-off em El Paso. Ele viu outro time celebrar a elegibilidade para o bowl no jogo final de uma temporada perdida.
Agora Wester conhece a alegria pura e sem cortes do futebol universitário.
Wester estava no lado receptor do que instantaneamente se torna um dos passes mais famosos da história do futebol americano do Colorado na noite de sábado. Ele capturou um Hail Mary de Shedeur Sanders depois que o tempo expirou no regulamento para forçar a prorrogação em uma vitória de 38-31 contra Baylor no Folsom Field.
“Eu, que estou na faculdade há um tempo, sempre estive do outro lado do bastão”, disse Wester. “Eles correm para o campo depois de nos vencerem e nós estamos apenas tentando sair do campo. Desta vez, pude aproveitar e realmente me conectar com alguns fãs, tirar fotos. Isso é ótimo, cara. Foi uma sensação incrível. Não há nada igual.”
Em uma noite selvagem, digna do retorno do Colorado ao jogo Big 12, os Buffs poderiam ter empatado o jogo na jogada anterior. Sanders lançou a bola em direção ao mesmo canto da end zone de Baylor, mas ela desviou nas mãos de Will Sheppard em uma jogada contestada.
O relógio ainda marcava :02. O Colorado teve uma segunda chance, e os Buffs não a desperdiçaram.
Três wide receivers — Wester, Sheppard e Omarion Miller — se alinharam à esquerda de Sanders. Travis Hunter, por design, se separou sozinho para a direita.
Hunter pode ser o melhor jogador de futebol americano universitário da América. Nesta jogada, ele foi o melhor chamariz.
“Eu disse ao treinador: ‘Deixe-me ir para o lado sozinho’”, disse Hunter. “Eu sabia que haveria mais pessoas em cima de mim, e isso daria aos nossos rapazes uma oportunidade de um contra um. Eles fizeram exatamente o que pensamos. Eles tinham três pessoas em cima de mim. Eu só sei que às vezes você tem que dar um passo para trás e deixar o time ir em frente e desempenhar seu papel e deixá-los fazer uma boa jogada. Então eu confiei no processo.
“Eu só queria que tivéssemos uma chance. É 50-50, mas com nosso corpo de recebedores é mais como 80-20. Quer dizer, você não pode ser melhor do que nosso corpo de recebedores.”
Sanders pegou o snap de shotgun e rolou para a esquerda. O pass rush de Baylor perseguiu Sanders a noite toda, derrubando-o oito vezes e pressionando-o em dezenas de seus quase 60 dropbacks.
Tirá-lo do bolso também foi intencional, mas dois Bears quase convergiram para ele no meio-campo quando Sanders mandou a bola em direção ao canto frontal esquerdo da end zone.
Wester encontrou a bola no ar e reagiu, pegando-a logo depois que o defensive back do Baylor, Caden Jenkins, caiu e bem antes que a ajuda do safety pudesse chegar. Foi a quarta recepção do jogo em sete alvos para Wester.
Ele não estava feliz com pelo menos uma das não capturas no começo do jogo. Então ele se redimiu.
“Você não vai ser perfeito”, disse Wester. “Você vai cometer erros, mas é só o próximo jogador e compensar. Contanto que você compense, todo mundo vai esquecer dessas quedas.”
A improbabilidade da jogada foi amplificada por tudo que levou a ela. Sanders foi derrubado em quatro das seis primeiras jogadas do Colorado depois que Baylor assumiu a liderança por 31-24. Em um ponto, foi segunda e 24 com 54 segundos para jogar e 69 jardas para a end zone.
Então houve o quase milagre para Sheppard. No final, Baylor chamou sua defesa para a jogada final. O técnico do Bears, Dave Aranda, disse que seu nome era Victory Cigar.
Depois foram Sanders e Wester que iluminaram o Folsom Field.
“Sempre confiei em Shedeur. Ele é a razão pela qual vim aqui”, disse Wester. “Ele veio e me pegou e eu disse a ele: ‘Não vou decepcioná-lo’. Vim aqui por um motivo. Ele me trouxe aqui por um motivo. Ele não me trouxe aqui para deixar a bola cair e perder tarefas. Ele me trouxe aqui para fazer o que eu faço, e hoje à noite eu fiz o que fiz.”
E agora Wester vai passar o resto da vida aprendendo sobre a imortalidade do futebol universitário em Boulder.
