VIRGINIA BEACH — Os líderes da cidade foram pegos de surpresa pelo cancelamento do festival Something in the Water na semana passada e querem garantir que farão parte do processo de tomada de decisão enquanto os organizadores do festival trabalham para remarcar.
O prefeito Bobby Dyer descreveu isso como “um grande problema” na reunião do Conselho Municipal de terça-feira. “É nosso dever que, quando tivermos qualquer evento no Oceanfront, haja uma luz positiva sobre ele. Esta não foi uma luz positiva.”
Ele recomendou que, para reconstruir a confiança, os organizadores do festival deveriam se comprometer com uma parceria de longo prazo, possivelmente de três a cinco anos, e que a cidade deveria assumir um papel mais proativo.
“A cidade foi deixada de fora do ciclo de decisões em termos do que acontece nas operações”, disse Dyer, que quer um contrato com a equipe do festival descrevendo as expectativas da cidade.
Os organizadores do festival notificaram a cidade na sexta-feira à tarde, poucas horas depois que os ingressos foram colocados à venda, que o evento de 12 a 13 de outubro foi cancelado e que eles pretendem remarcá-lo para abril. Logo após a cidade ser notificada na sexta-feira, Pharrell Williams postou nas redes sociais que o festival ainda não estava pronto e que os compradores de ingressos seriam reembolsados.
Embora os organizadores estejam de olho em uma mudança para abril, o administrador municipal Patrick Duhaney disse que a decisão de mudar a data do festival não foi consolidada pelo Conselho Municipal.
O Something in the Water foi realizado pela primeira vez no Virginia Beach Oceanfront em 2019. Williams foi originalmente convidado a organizar um evento no final de abril para fornecer entretenimento estruturado para estudantes universitários que vinham à área do resort a cada primavera.
Depois que o mau tempo forçou Williams a cancelar o terceiro dia do festival em 2023, ele decidiu transferi-lo para outubro deste ano na esperança de melhores condições.
Duhaney observou que o dinheiro que a cidade reservou para patrocínio — até US$ 2 milhões — não foi gasto. Ele leu uma carta da equipe do festival que indicava que problemas com a escalação de artistas levaram Williams a cancelar a data de outubro.
“Depois de passar um tempo considerável com membros da comunidade musical, decidimos coletivamente que um festival em abril seria muito mais substancial e impactante para a cidade de Virginia Beach e permitiria que alguns dos participantes que cometeram e suportaram conflitos além do controle de Pharrell participassem em abril”, escreveram os organizadores do festival.
A equipe do festival prometeu ter “um plano concreto definido neste ano civil”.
As vereadoras Amelia Ross-Hammond e Jennifer Rouse, responsáveis pelo festival, disseram que o anúncio de sexta-feira foi uma surpresa para ambas.
“Nós nos sentimos pegos de surpresa”, disse Ross-Hammond.
Os dois tiveram várias reuniões com autoridades da cidade e organizadores do festival durante o fim de semana.
“Recebemos muitas reações, perguntas, frustrações e preocupações”, disse Rouse. “Fizemos questão de compartilhar isso com a equipe do Something in the Water, assim como com a cidade.”
Rouse disse que está pressionando os organizadores do festival para definir a data e a programação de abril o mais rápido possível.
“Eles querem fazer um esforço intencional para reconstruir credibilidade e confiança”, disse Rouse.
A vereadora Barbara Henley disse que o adiamento é mais do que apenas uma decepção para os empresários.
“Isso custou muito dinheiro para muitas pessoas”, ela disse, citando que alguns hotéis não terão a renda com a qual estavam contando.
“Nós tomamos isso como uma experiência de aprendizado”, disse Henley. “Temos que estabelecer referências.”
