Enquanto Brian Burns falava em seu armário após a derrota dos Giants por 20-15 para os Cowboys, ele gritou para Malik Nabers do outro lado da sala.
“Você está bem?” Burns perguntou ao wide receiver novato. “Você é hetero?”
Nabers balançou a cabeça negativamente.
Nabers saiu com uma concussão no final do quarto período do jogo do horário nobre de quinta-feira à noite no MetLife Stadium. Sua cabeça bateu na grama enquanto ele tentava fazer um passe de 4º e 6º de Daniel Jones perto da linha lateral faltando 3:30 para o fim.
O passe ficou incompleto e Nabers permaneceu caído por um tempo antes de entrar na tenda médica e, por fim, voltar ao vestiário.
O jovem de 21 anos não se dirigiu à mídia, já que agora está em protocolo de concussão, mas falou em seu armário com companheiros de equipe, incluindo Jones e Jalin Hyatt.
Em uma postagem em sua história no Instagram no final da noite, Nabers escreveu: “Tudo bem. Obrigado por todas as orações!!!”
A lesão encerrou repentinamente o último desempenho elétrico do estreante.
“Ele acertou alguns figurões hoje”, disse o guarda esquerdo Jon Runyan. “Isso foi difícil. Em tempo real, pensei que ele tivesse percebido. Eu estava realmente entusiasmado por ele. Ele deixou tudo lá fora.
Nabers terminou com 12 recepções para 115 jardas. Suas 35 recepções nesta temporada são as segundas mais nos primeiros quatro jogos de um jogador na história da NFL, atrás apenas das 39 registradas por Puka Nacua, dos Rams, no ano passado.
Nacua estabeleceu recordes de recepções (105) e jardas recebidas (1.486) em uma temporada de estreia.
Nabers, que os Giants retiraram da LSU com a escolha número 6 em abril, agora possui 386 jardas e três touchdowns. Ele marcou 15 gols na quinta-feira – seu terceiro jogo consecutivo com pelo menos 12.
“Ele está fazendo algumas coisas boas”, disse o técnico Brian Daboll antes de conversar com Nabers. “Que bom que o temos. … Agora vou vê-lo aqui. Espero que ele esteja bem.”
Jogando no horário nobre pela primeira vez como profissional, Nabers precisou de apenas três ataques ofensivos na quinta-feira para deixar sua marca.
Com os Giants enfrentando 3º e 4º em sua posse de bola inicial, Nabers usou um movimento duplo desagradável para ultrapassar o cornerback dos Cowboys, Andrew Booth. O wide receiver fingiu dar um passo para dentro e avançou enquanto Booth se virava em direção ao gramado do MetLife Stadium e usava a mão esquerda para recuperar o equilíbrio.
Um Nabers totalmente aberto recebeu uma recepção de 39 jardas de Jones para a recepção mais longa de sua temporada de estreia. Essa tentativa terminou com um field goal de 52 jardas de Greg Joseph, dando aos Giants uma vantagem inicial de 3-0.
“Ele jogou um grande jogo novamente e apareceu para nós em grande momento”, disse Jones, “então continuaremos confiando nele”.
A saída de Nabers ocorreu uma jogada depois que o astro pass rusher dos Cowboys, Micah Parson, saiu com uma lesão no tornozelo.
O confronto divisional de quinta-feira chamou atenção extra depois que um comentário feito por Nabers durante a entressafra atraiu a ira de Trevon Diggs, o melhor cornerback dos Cowboys.
Questionado sobre qual cornerback da NFL ele mal podia esperar para enfrentar, Nabers respondeu: “Trevon Diggs”. Em uma réplica não tão sutil, Diggs escreveu no X: “Os gigantes estão ganhando cinturão há alguns anos”.
“Quer dizer, é o que é, mas realmente não quero falar sobre isso”, disse Nabers esta semana em referência a essa controvérsia. “Quer dizer, é hora do jogo agora.”
O falcão da bola Diggs normalmente não viaja com o melhor recebedor do oponente, mas – com os colegas cornerbacks DaRon Bland e Caelen Carson lesionados – ele frequentemente se alinhava em frente a Nabers.
A maior parte do sucesso de Nabers veio de jogadas que ele não foi defendido por Diggs, embora ele tenha conseguido uma recepção de sete jardas nos dias 4 e 3 em uma corrida no quarto período que terminou com o quinto field goal de Joseph da noite.
Quase uma década antes, outro receptor superstar da LSU, Odell Beckham Jr., apresentou-se ao público nacional com sua recepção para touchdown com uma mão contra os Cowboys no MetLife Stadium no “Sunday Night Football” em 23 de novembro de 2014.
Esse foi o sétimo jogo de Beckham na carreira.
Em um prenúncio, Michael Strahan compartilhou durante a cobertura pré-jogo do Amazon Prime Video na quinta-feira que o coproprietário do Giants, John Mara, disse a ele durante o campo de treinamento que Nabers tinha o “melhor conjunto de habilidades e melhor controle corporal” que o time tinha visto desde Beckham.
E embora Nabers não tenha apresentado nenhum destaque que se aproximasse do grau de dificuldade da recepção clássica instantânea de Beckham – ao contrário de domingo, quando ele arrancou uma bola de um zagueiro dos Browns e mais tarde conseguiu uma torção para touchdown – ele mais uma vez fez jus ao exagero nas alturas.
“As lesões são sempre difíceis, mas sabemos que ele está lutando muito”, disse o left tackle Andrew Thomas. “Sempre que ele está saudável, estamos entusiasmados por tê-lo de volta.”
Nabers precisaria ser liberado nos próximos 10 dias para jogar o próximo jogo dos Giants, em 6 de outubro, em Seattle.
