Stewart Minor Hurtt, que exerceu a advocacia no Condado de Prince George por mais de quatro décadas, morreu de complicações da doença de Alzheimer em 12 de setembro no Transitions LifeCare em Raleigh, Carolina do Norte. O antigo morador de Eastern Shore tinha 81 anos.
“Stewart foi um advogado consumado que desenvolveu uma especialização em direito imobiliário e cujo aconselhamento era amplamente procurado”, disse o juiz C. Philip Nichols Jr., que se aposentou em 2017 como juiz-chefe do Tribunal do Circuito de Prince George e foi antigo sócio de longa data do Sr. Hurtt.
“Ele era extremamente inteligente, amigável e alguém com quem você sempre podia contar”, disse o Juiz Nichols. “Eu o admirava como um parceiro de advocacia, e ainda o admiro agora.”
Stewart Minor Hurtt, filho de Charles Dunton Hurtt Jr., gerente de banco, e Louise Trail Woodward Hurtt, dona de casa, nasceu e foi criado em Laurel, sendo o mais novo de dois filhos.
“Ele era de uma família muito proeminente em Laurel e, quando adolescente, era um escoteiro águia”, disse o juiz Nichols.
Depois de se formar em 1961 na Laurel High School, o Sr. Hurtt começou seus estudos universitários na Washington & Lee University, onde foi membro do ROTC e gerente da fraternidade Sigma Nu.
Em 1965, ele se formou em civilizações contemporâneas e depois serviu na Polícia Militar do Exército em Paris, França, até ser dispensado em 1966.
Ele permaneceu como reservista do Exército e obteve o posto de capitão antes de ser dispensado em 1975.
O Sr. Hurtt então retornou à Washington & Lee, onde obteve seu diploma de direito em 1972 e foi aprovado nas provas da Ordem dos Advogados de Maryland e Washington naquele ano.
Em 1972, ele e o juiz Nichols fundaram a Nichols & Hurtt, e os dois homens atuaram juntos até o juiz Nichols assumir o cargo.
No início de sua carreira, o Sr. Hurtt se concentrou em direito de família antes de se dedicar a acordos imobiliários e seguros de títulos.
O escritório de advocacia deles ficava no Old Line Building, na Second Street, em Laurel, uma propriedade que os dois homens reformaram e restauraram.
“Stewart fez mais do que eu porque ele era muito talentoso e um bom marceneiro”, disse o juiz Nichols rindo.
O Sr. Hurtt deixou sua própria empresa em 1992, quando começou a trabalhar como consultor de subscrição corporativa para empresas nacionais de seguros de títulos, como Fountainhead Title Group, Stewart Title e Old Republic National Title Insurance.
Ele se aposentou em 2015.
O Sr. Hurtt e sua esposa, Suzanne Spence, uma patologista de plantas do USDA, se casaram em 1978, e o casal criou seus dois filhos em Clarksville e depois em Columbia.
Ele gostava de projetos de renovação e reformou com sucesso um sobrado na Prince George Street, em Annapolis, disse sua filha, Elizabeth Hurtt, de Durham, Carolina do Norte.
Após sua aposentadoria, ele e sua esposa se mudaram para East New Market, no Condado de Dorchester, depois de reformarem uma casa com vista para o Rio Choptank.
Além de trabalhar com madeira, o Sr. Hurtt gostava de pintar, reformar móveis antigos e ler — especialmente biografias e livros sobre política.
A esposa do Sr. Hurtt morreu em 1º de abril.
Um serviço memorial conjunto para o casal será realizado às 13h do dia 11 de outubro no Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery, 6827 E. New Market Ellwood Road, Hurlock.
Além da filha, ele deixa o filho, Alex Hurtt, de Columbia; uma neta; e uma sobrinha.
