O número de pessoas na Escócia cuja morte foi causada pelo álcool continua alto, com o maior número de mortes em 15 anos.
Os últimos números do National Records of Scotland (NRS) mostram que 1.277 pessoas morreram de doenças causadas pelo álcool em 2023.
Essa foi uma morte a mais que no ano anterior, que foi o maior número desde 2008.
A Ministra da Saúde Pública, Jenni Minto, disse que o governo escocês continua a tratar os danos relacionados ao álcool como uma emergência de saúde pública.
As mortes masculinas aumentaram para 861 e novamente foram responsáveis por cerca de dois terços das mortes específicas por álcool. As mortes femininas diminuíram em 24 mortes para 416.
Pessoas com idades entre 45-64 e 65-74 anos continuam a apresentar as maiores taxas de mortalidade.
Problemas relacionados ao álcool foram listados como causa de morte de 140 pessoas entre 60 e 64 anos, enquanto 128 pessoas entre 65 e 69 anos morreram.
A faixa etária mais jovem a registrar mortes relacionadas ao álcool foi de 20 a 24 anos — essa faixa etária teve duas mortes em 2023.
Áreas como Inverclyde, Glasgow City, North Lanarkshire e Dundee City registraram mortes acima da média escocesa.
Glasgow City continua a ter a maior taxa de mortalidade por alguma margem, registrando 184, embora tenha caído de 202 no ano anterior. North Lanarkshire viu 115 mortes, acima de 107.
Phillipa Haxton, chefe de estatísticas de eventos vitais, disse que as taxas de mortes “aumentaram em geral” desde 2012.
Ela disse: “Se observarmos a idade média da morte, ela aumentou ao longo do tempo.
“As taxas de mortalidade para pessoas de 65 a 74 anos e de 75 anos ou mais estavam em seus níveis mais altos desde que começamos a registrar esses números em 1994.
“Ao mesmo tempo, para a faixa etária de 25 a 44 anos, a taxa de mortalidade tem se mantido bastante estável na última década.”
A Ministra da Saúde Pública Jenni Minto disse: “Minhas condolências vão para todos aqueles que perderam um ente querido por causa do álcool. O governo escocês está determinado a fazer tudo o que puder para reduzir os danos relacionados ao álcool e continuamos a tratá-lo como uma prioridade igual às drogas como uma emergência de saúde pública.”
Ela disse que, além de aumentar o preço mínimo unitário do álcool, o governo escocês investiu em serviços de tratamento de alcoolismo e estava explorando maneiras de reduzir a exposição de crianças e jovens ao marketing de álcool.
‘Escândalo nacional’
O porta-voz da saúde conservadora escocesa, Sandesh Gulhane, disse que as mortes relacionadas ao álcool permanecem “vergonhosamente altas”.
Ele disse: “O nível de mortes é totalmente horrível e vergonhoso para um governo do SNP que insiste que é progressista; são nossas comunidades mais carentes que continuam sendo as mais afetadas por suas falhas.
“Os ministros do SNP que se apegaram à sua política emblemática de preços unitários mínimos para enfrentar esta crise devem finalmente aceitar que ela falhou monumentalmente.”
A porta-voz de saúde pública do Partido Trabalhista Escocês, Carol Mochan, disse que “a escala desta crise é um escândalo nacional”.
“O número de mortes causadas diretamente pelo álcool é apenas uma parte dos danos que o álcool causa na Escócia, com muito mais vidas sendo arruinadas”, disse ela.
Ela acrescentou: “Não há desculpa para a inação quando há vidas em jogo – o governo do SNP deve estabelecer um plano abrangente para enfrentar as causas raiz desta emergência de saúde pública e garantir que os serviços de drogas e álcool possam oferecer às pessoas o suporte vital de que precisam.”
O líder do Partido Liberal Democrata Escocês e porta-voz da saúde Alex Cole-Hamilton acrescentou: “É devastador que mais de 20 pessoas morram por semana devido ao uso indevido de álcool na Escócia. Este será um dia difícil para todos aqueles que perderam um ente querido.
“Precisamos de um pensamento conjunto do governo escocês para impedir que o álcool destrua vidas e comunidades.”
O Dr. Peter Rice, presidente da Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems, disse que as mortes poderiam ter sido evitadas.
“A abordagem da Escócia para reduzir os danos do álcool teve sucesso na redução de mortes por álcool no passado, incluindo a introdução do Preço Unitário Mínimo em 2018″, ele disse. “No entanto, para ser bem-sucedida, a política precisa ser sustentada e progressiva.”
Laura Mahon, vice-presidente executiva da Alcohol Focus Scotland, disse que os números continuam “alarmante e inaceitavelmente altos”.
“Eles foram motivados por padrões de consumo excessivo de álcool estabelecidos durante a pandemia, que infelizmente não mostram sinais reais de melhora”, disse ela.
“Precisamos de uma mudança radical se quisermos reverter essa terrível onda de danos causados pelo álcool, que tira a vida de amigos e familiares e afeta cada um de nós.”
A Escócia continuou a ter a maior taxa de mortalidade específica por álcool do Reino Unido em 2022. Os números para todo o Reino Unido ainda não estão disponíveis para 2023.
A diferença entre a Escócia e os outros países do Reino Unido diminuiu nas últimas duas décadas.
Em 2001, a taxa de mortalidade específica por álcool na Escócia foi entre 2,1 e 2,9 vezes maior que em outros países do Reino Unido.
A taxa para a Escócia foi entre 1,2 e 1,6 vezes maior em 2022.
Tendência ascendente
O número de mortes relacionadas ao álcool na Escócia tem aumentado em geral desde 2012, quando caiu abaixo de 1.000 pela primeira vez desde 1998.
No geral, os números têm apresentado uma tendência ascendente desde então, com exceção de uma breve queda em 2019. Em 2022, o país atingiu o maior nível em 14 anos.
A Escócia tornou-se o primeiro país do mundo a introduzir preço unitário mínimo (MUP) para álcool em maio de 2018.
A partir do final deste mês, o preço mínimo por unidade de álcool na Escócia aumentará de 50p para 65p — uma medida projetada para refletir o aumento da inflação.
A mudança fará com que o preço mínimo de uma garrafa de vodca aumente de £ 13,13 para £ 17,06 e uma lata padrão de cerveja passe de pelo menos £ 1 para £ 1,30.
Um estudo financiado pelo governo escocês publicado em março do ano passado sugeriu que a introdução do esquema na Escócia levou a menos mortes relacionadas ao álcool e internações hospitalares em comparação com a Inglaterra.
